1817 – 1893Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893)Died 1 October 1893, aged 76British classical scholar and theologian who served as Master of Balliol College, Oxford. He is best remembered for his influential English translations of Plato's dialogues.
1817 – 1848Branwell Brontë (1817-1848)Died 24 September 1848, aged 31English painter and writer, the only brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë. His group portrait of his sisters is in the National Portrait Gallery. Alcohol and opium addiction ruined his health and he died at Haworth.
1817 – 1862Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)Died 6 May 1862, aged 44Thoreau was an American writer, naturalist, and philosopher best known for Walden and the essay "Civil Disobedience." He died of tuberculosis in Concord, Massachusetts.
1817 – 1903Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903)Died 1 November 1903, aged 85Theodor Mommsen was a German classical scholar and historian whose History of Rome remains a landmark work of ancient historiography. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902. He died near Berlin on 1 November 1903.
1817 – 1890William III of the Netherlands (1817-1890)Died 23 November 1890, aged 73William III was King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg for over four decades, presiding over a period of growing parliamentary influence in Dutch politics. His death ended the personal union between the Netherlands and Luxembourg, since Luxembourg's succession law barred his daughter Wilhelmina from inheriting the grand duchy. Wilhelmina succeeded him as Queen of the Netherlands under a regency led by her mother.
