1827 – 1857Mangal Pandey (1827-1857)Executed 8 April 1857, aged 29Pandey was a sepoy in the British East India Company's army whose attack on his officers at Barrackpore in March 1857 is often cited as the spark that ignited the Indian Rebellion of 1857. He was court-martialed and hanged weeks later. He has since become a celebrated symbol of Indian resistance to colonial rule.

He also served as France's foreign minister and minister of public instruction. He died in Paris hours after his wife, and the couple were buried together in the Pantheon.
