1834 – 1907Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907)Died 2 February 1907, aged 72Russian chemist who created the periodic table of elements, arranging them by atomic weight and predicting the properties of then-undiscovered elements. His system became the foundation of modern chemistry. He died in Saint Petersburg.
1834 – 1904Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904)Died 4 October 1904, aged 70Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the French sculptor, died in Paris. He designed the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States dedicated in 1886 that became one of the most recognized monuments in the world. He also created numerous other public sculptures across France.

His engines powered some of the earliest automobiles, motorcycles, and boats. The Mercedes and Daimler-Benz marques trace their lineage to his work.
