• 1786 – 1844 Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844) Died 27 February 1844, aged 58 American financier and president of the Second Bank of the United States. His fight with Andrew Jackson over renewing the bank's charter became known as the Bank War.
• 1844 Dominican Republic declares independence from Haiti Separatists seize Santo Domingo and end Haitian rule Members of the secret society La Trinitaria, led by Juan Pablo Duarte's associates, proclaimed independence at the Puerta del Conde in Santo Domingo. This ended 22 years of Haitian control over the eastern part of Hispaniola. The date is celebrated as the Dominican Republic's national independence day.
