1854Republican Party foundedNew US party formed in opposition to slavery's expansionOpponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act met in Jackson, Michigan, and formally organized the Republican Party. The new party united former Whigs, Free Soilers, and anti-slavery Democrats and would elect Abraham Lincoln president six years later.
