• 1858 Harris Treaty opens Japan to American trade Treaty of Amity and Commerce signed between Japan and the United States Townsend Harris negotiated a commercial treaty granting the United States trading rights at additional Japanese ports and extraterritorial rights for American citizens. It was the first of the so-called unequal treaties Japan signed with Western powers that year. Similar treaties with Britain, France, Russia, and the Netherlands followed within months.
