1867Battle of MentanaFrench and Papal forces halt Garibaldi's march on RomeGiuseppe Garibaldi led irregular volunteers in an attempt to seize Rome from the Papal States and complete Italian unification. A combined force of Papal troops and French reinforcements armed with new Chassepot rifles defeated Garibaldi's men at Mentana. Rome remained under papal control until 1870.
