• 1868 Grito de Yara Cuban rebellion against Spain begins the Ten Years' War Planter Carlos Manuel de Cespedes freed his slaves and declared Cuban independence from Spain at his sugar estate, an act known as the Grito de Yara. The declaration ignited the Ten Years' War, Cuba's first major war of independence. The conflict lasted until 1878 and reshaped Cuban society.
