• 1820 – 1878 Victor Emmanuel II (1820-1878) Died 9 January 1878, aged 57 The first king of a united Italy, he reigned as King of Sardinia before becoming King of Italy in 1861 following unification. He worked with Camillo Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi to achieve Italian unification. He died in Rome and was buried in the Pantheon.
• 1821 – 1878 Nikolai Nekrasov (1821-1878) Died 8 January 1878, aged 56 A Russian poet and publisher, he edited influential literary journals including Sovremennik and Otechestvennye Zapiski. His poetry gave voice to the hardships of Russian peasants and became central to the country's civic literary tradition. He died of cancer in Saint Petersburg.
• 1861 – 1878 Victor Emmanuel II First King of unified Italy Victor Emmanuel II became the first king of unified Italy during the Risorgimento.
