1830 – 1878Okubo Toshimichi (1830-1878)Died 14 May 1878, aged 47A Japanese statesman regarded as one of the three great nobles who led the Meiji Restoration, he was a principal architect of Japan's modernization as a government minister. He was assassinated in Tokyo by disaffected samurai opposed to his reforms. His death marked the end of the Restoration's founding generation of leaders.
1878Exposition Universelle opens in ParisWorld's fair showcases new technology and the artsFrance hosted its third World's Fair in Paris, featuring the newly completed head of the Statue of Liberty and early displays of electric lighting. The exposition drew over 13 million visitors and marked France's recovery from the Franco-Prussian War. It closed in November 1878.
