1845 – 1886Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886)Died 13 June 1886, aged 40King Ludwig II of Bavaria died in mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg, days after being declared insane and deposed by a government commission. He was known for extravagant building projects, including Neuschwanstein Castle, and for his patronage of the composer Richard Wagner. His death, officially ruled a drowning, remains disputed by historians.
