1888Bryant and May match workers strike in LondonFemale factory workers protest pay and dangerous conditionsAbout 1,400 women and girls at the Bryant and May match factory in London walked out on strike on 5 July 1888, protesting low pay, excessive fines, and health hazards including 'phossy jaw' caused by white phosphorus. The strike succeeded within weeks, winning better conditions and helping establish the Union of Women Matchmakers. It became a landmark early victory for organized labor in Britain.
