1818 – 1895Frederick Douglass (1818-1895)Died 20 February 1895, aged about 77Frederick Douglass escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist, orator, and writer, and one of the most influential African American leaders of the 19th century. He advised presidents and campaigned for the rights of both Black Americans and women. He died of a heart attack in Washington, D.C.
1895Volleyball inventedWilliam G. Morgan creates a new sport in MassachusettsOn 9 February 1895 physical education instructor William G. Morgan devised a new game called Mintonette at a YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, intended as a less strenuous alternative to basketball. The game was soon renamed volleyball and spread through YMCA networks worldwide. It later became an Olympic sport.
1895Cuban War of Independence beginsThe Grito de Baire launches Cuba's final revolt against SpainOn 24 February 1895 Cuban rebels launched a coordinated uprising against Spanish colonial rule, known as the Grito de Baire. The revolt, organized in part by Jose Marti, grew into a prolonged guerrilla war that drew United States intervention in 1898. It ended nearly four centuries of Spanish rule in Cuba.
