1896Marconi files wireless telegraphy patentFirst patent for a practical radio systemGuglielmo Marconi filed a patent application in London on 2 June 1896 for a system of wireless telegraphy using radio waves. It was the first patent granted anywhere for radio communication and led directly to the founding of Marconi's wireless company. The technology would transform military, maritime and civilian communication within a decade.
1896Henry Ford builds the QuadricycleFord's first automobile takes to the streets of DetroitOn 4 June 1896 Henry Ford completed and test-drove the Quadricycle, his first self-propelled vehicle, through the streets of Detroit. The lightweight frame carried a two-cylinder engine and rode on four bicycle wheels. It launched Ford's career as an automobile maker, leading to the Ford Motor Company seven years later.
