1834 – 1896William Morris (1834-1896)Died 3 October 1896, aged 62William Morris was an English textile designer, writer and socialist who led the Arts and Crafts movement and founded the decorative arts firm Morris & Co. His patterned fabrics and wallpapers remain widely reproduced, and his writing helped shape early British socialism. He died at his home in Hammersmith, London, on 3 October 1896.

He skipped lectures freely and relied on Marcel Grossmann's notes. Hermann Minkowski, who taught him mathematics, later called him a lazy dog.

Italy recognized Ethiopia as a fully independent state, abandoning the earlier Treaty of Wuchale that Italy had used to claim a protectorate. Ethiopia remained one of the only uncolonized states in Africa.
