1829 – 1909Geronimo (1829-1909)Died 17 February 1909, aged 79Geronimo was a leader and medicine man of the Chiricahua Apache who led resistance against Mexican and American expansion into Apache lands for decades. He surrendered to the United States Army in 1886 and spent the rest of his life as a prisoner of war. He died of pneumonia at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, on 17 February 1909.
1909Leo Baekeland unveils BakeliteFirst fully synthetic plastic announced to chemistsBelgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland presented his new synthetic resin, Bakelite, to the American Chemical Society on 5 February 1909. Made from phenol and formaldehyde, it was the first plastic manufactured entirely from synthetic components rather than modified natural materials. Bakelite's durability and moldability made it widely used in electrical and consumer goods for decades.
1909 – 2010Miep Gies (1909-2010)Died 11 January 2010, aged 100Gies was one of the Dutch citizens who hid Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic during the Second World War. After the family's arrest, she preserved Anne's diary and later gave it to Anne's father, Otto Frank, leading to its publication. She was among the last surviving helpers of the Frank family.
