1844 – 1910Henri Rousseau (1844-1910)Died 2 September 1910, aged 66French post-impressionist painter, known as Le Douanier, celebrated for his naive, dreamlike jungle scenes despite having no formal artistic training. Largely dismissed by critics during his lifetime, he was championed by younger artists including Pablo Picasso. His work later became a major influence on modern and surrealist art.
