1936Trial of the SixteenFirst of the Moscow show trialsGrigory Zinoviev, Lev Kamenev and fourteen other Old Bolsheviks were tried in Moscow on invented charges of plotting with Trotsky. All sixteen were sentenced to death and shot straight after the verdict. The trial marked the start of the Great Purge's public phase.
