1881 – 1936Lu Xun (1881-1936)Died 19 October 1936, aged 55Lu Xun was a Chinese writer and a leading figure of modern Chinese literature. His works include A Madman's Diary and The True Story of Ah Q. His critiques of traditional society influenced the May Fourth Movement.
1936Arab general strike in PalestineSix-month strike opens the Arab revoltArab leaders in Mandatory Palestine called a general strike against Jewish immigration and British rule, and the newly formed Arab Higher Committee took charge of it. The strike was accompanied by armed attacks and lasted until the committee called it off in October. It was the first phase of the Arab revolt, which continued until 1939.
1936Battle of Cable StreetEast London crowds block a fascist marchOswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists planned to march through the Jewish East End of London. Tens of thousands of anti-fascists put up barricades and clashed with the police who were clearing the route. The march was called off, and the Public Order Act 1936 followed.
1936Jarrow MarchUnemployed shipyard workers march to LondonAbout 200 men from Jarrow in north-east England marched nearly 300 miles to London to protest against mass unemployment after the town's shipyard closed. They delivered a petition to Parliament. The march became a lasting symbol of the Depression in Britain.
