1861 – 1941Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)Died 7 August 1941, aged 80Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, composer and philosopher, and in 1913 the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He wrote the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
1892 – 1941Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941)Died 31 August 1941, aged 48Marina Tsvetaeva was one of the major Russian poets of the twentieth century. After returning from emigration she was isolated and destitute, and she took her own life in Yelabuga after being evacuated there.
1894 – 1941Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941)Died 14 August 1941, aged 47Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger condemned to starvation at Auschwitz. He was killed by lethal injection and canonised in 1982.

1941 – 2006Slobodan Milošević (1941-2006)Died 11 March 2006, aged 64Slobodan Milošević, former President of Serbia and Yugoslavia, died of a heart attack in his cell at the UN detention center in The Hague. He was on trial for genocide and war crimes committed during the Yugoslav wars when he died, and the tribunal proceedings were formally terminated. No verdict was ever reached.
