1868 – 1943Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943)Died 26 June 1943, aged 75Karl Landsteiner was an Austrian-American pathologist who discovered the ABO blood groups, which made safe blood transfusion possible. He received the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He later co-discovered the Rh factor.
1893 – 1943Leslie Howard (1893-1943)Died 1 June 1943, aged 50Leslie Howard was an English actor and director known for Gone with the Wind, Pygmalion and The Scarlet Pimpernel. German fighters shot down his civilian airliner, BOAC Flight 777, over the Bay of Biscay while he was flying home from Lisbon. Everyone on board was killed.

1943Zoot Suit RiotsServicemen attack Mexican American youths in Los AngelesUS servicemen roamed Los Angeles attacking young Mexican Americans who wore zoot suits. They stripped and beat their victims, and the police largely arrested the victims rather than the attackers. The violence ended after military authorities declared the city off-limits to personnel.
