1948Berlin Blockade beginsSoviet Union cuts off land access to West BerlinOn June 24, 1948, Soviet forces blocked all rail, road, and canal access to the Western-controlled sectors of Berlin in an attempt to force the Allies out of the city. The United States and Britain responded with the Berlin Airlift, flying in food and fuel around the clock. The standoff became one of the defining crises of the early Cold War.
