1948The transistor is publicly announcedBell Labs unveils the device that will replace the vacuum tubeOn June 30, 1948, Bell Telephone Laboratories publicly announced the transistor, invented the previous December by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley. The tiny solid-state device could amplify and switch electronic signals far more efficiently than the vacuum tubes it would eventually replace. It became the foundation of virtually all modern electronics.
