• 1957 Little Rock Crisis Federal troops enforce school desegregation in Arkansas Nine Black students attempting to integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas were blocked by the state National Guard on Governor Orval Faubus's orders. President Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to escort the students into the school, a major confrontation over Brown v. Board of Education.
• 1957 Wolfenden Report published UK committee recommends decriminalising homosexuality A British government committee chaired by John Wolfenden published a report recommending that homosexual acts between consenting adults in private no longer be a criminal offence. It took a decade for the recommendation to become law in England and Wales.
