His father Eugene was a real estate developer and aerospace equipment distributor; his mother Gladys was a homemaker. Val grew up in the San Fernando Valley with brothers Mark and Wesley. Wesley drowned in a jacuzzi at age 15, a tragedy that profoundly affected the family and Val in particular.
