1992Fujimori dissolves Peru's Congress"Autogolpe" suspends the constitutionPresident Alberto Fujimori suspended Peru's constitution, dissolved Congress, and assumed emergency powers in what became known as the "autogolpe" or self-coup. He justified the move as necessary to fight the Shining Path insurgency and corruption. Fujimori retained power after a new constitution was adopted the following year.
