1904 – 1996Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904-1996)Died 11 May 1996, aged 91Nnamdi Azikiwe was a Nigerian statesman who served as the country's first President after independence and is regarded as a founding father of Nigerian nationalism. He was a leading pan-Africanist journalist and politician before assuming the presidency in 1963. He remained an influential elder statesman until his death.

(Deep Blue lost the first match in 1996; it wins the rematch in 1997.) The victory is a global sensation and IBM's most dramatic demonstration of computing power since the Apollo programme. Kasparov accuses IBM of cheating; IBM denies it and declines to play a rematch. Deep Blue is retired after the 1997 match.
