1919 – 2000Pierre Trudeau (1919-2000)Died 28 September 2000, aged 80Pierre Elliott Trudeau was prime minister of Canada from 1968 to 1979 and again from 1980 to 1984, a charismatic figure who inspired "Trudeaumania". He patriated the constitution with its Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, championed official bilingualism, and invoked emergency powers in the 1970 October Crisis. His death brought national mourning.
2000Outbreak of the Second IntifadaA Palestinian uprising follows a visit to the Temple MountOn 28 September 2000 the Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount, or Haram al-Sharif, in Jerusalem, and clashes the next day spread across the West Bank and Gaza. The uprising that followed brought years of shootings, suicide bombings and Israeli military operations, killing roughly 3,000 Palestinians and 1,000 Israelis before subsiding around 2005.
