1912 – 2001Jorge Amado (1912-2001)Died 6 August 2001, aged 88Amado was Brazil's most widely translated novelist, chronicling life in his native Bahia in books such as Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. His early work was politically committed; his later novels were sensual and comic. His books were adapted into films and television series.
1915 – 2001Fred Hoyle (1915-2001)Died 20 August 2001, aged 86Hoyle was an astronomer who explained how stars forge the chemical elements, work for which a Nobel Prize later went to a collaborator. He championed the steady-state theory of the universe and coined the term Big Bang for the rival model he rejected. He also wrote science fiction.
1979 – 2001Aaliyah (1979-2001)Died 25 August 2001, aged 22Aaliyah Haughton was an American singer and actor whose blend of R&B and hip-hop, on albums such as her self-titled 2001 release, made her a defining figure of the era. She had begun a film career with Romeo Must Die. She was killed with eight others when an overloaded plane crashed after a video shoot in the Bahamas.
