1937 – 2003Herb Brooks (1937-2003)Died 11 August 2003, aged 66Herb Brooks coached the United States ice hockey team that beat the heavily favoured Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics, a game known as the Miracle on Ice, and went on to win the gold medal. He later coached in the National Hockey League and died in a car crash in Minnesota.

His departure ended the Second Liberian Civil War and led to a large United Nations peacekeeping mission.
