2018Saudi Arabia lifts ban on women drivingKingdom ends the world's last prohibition on female driversSaudi Arabia officially lifted its ban on women driving, ending the last such prohibition in the world. The change was part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's social liberalization agenda. Several women's rights activists who had campaigned for the change were arrested shortly before the ban was lifted.
2018Turkish general electionErdogan re-elected under new executive presidential systemRecep Tayyip Erdogan was re-elected president of Turkey in the first election held under a new constitutional system that abolished the office of prime minister and concentrated power in the presidency. The system had been approved in a 2017 referendum. Erdogan's AK Party-led alliance also won a parliamentary majority.
