Byzantine Empire: The Final Century Timeline

Byzantine Empire: The Final Century 20

1261 – 1453 Byzantine Empire: The Final Century (1261–1453) The Palaiologan period (1261-1453) is the last chapter of Byzantine history -- 192 years of extraordinary cultural flowering alongside relentless political and territorial decline. The Chora Church mosaics and frescoes are among the finest medieval art anywhere; the Hesychast controversy produces Byzantine theology's deepest exploration of mystical prayer; the Council of Florence (1439) nearly achieves reunion with Rome. But civil wars, the Black Death, Serbian and Ottoman pressure reduce the empire to Constantinople and its immediate surroundings. Constantine XI Palaiologos, the last emperor, dies on the walls on 29 May 1453 as Mehmed II's army enters. 1,123 years of Roman continuity end.
1261 – 1282 Michael VIII Palaiologos -- the restaurer who sold the future Michael VIII (1261-1282) reconquers Constantinople and spends his reign preventing its re-capture. He defeats Charles of Anjou's planned western crusade to restore the Latin Empire through the Sicilian Vespers (1282) -- a Sicilian uprising against French rule that he had financed. He negotiates the Union of Lyons (1274), temporarily accepting papal supremacy to deter western intervention. He alienates the Orthodox Church and much of the Greek population by his unionist policy. He rebuilds Constantinople's walls and defences. At his death the empire is secure but internally divided and diplomatically isolated.
1282 – 1328 The Palaiologan Renaissance -- art at the end of empire The reign of Andronikos II (1282-1328) sees the extraordinary cultural flowering called the Palaiologan Renaissance. The Chora Church (Kariye Camii) in Constantinople, decorated in the early 14th century with mosaics and frescoes of breathtaking beauty, is its supreme expression -- a programme of biblical narrative imagery as sophisticated as anything in contemporary Italian art. Byzantine scholars Theodore Metochites, Nikephoros Gregoras and Gregory Palamas produce theological and philosophical work of the highest quality. The paradox: the finest Byzantine art is produced as the empire contracts to a city.
1299 – 1326 Osman I -- the Ottoman state emerges Osman I (c.1258-1326) founds the Ottoman dynasty in northwestern Anatolia -- initially a small border principality among many competing Turkish beyliks, but uniquely positioned on the Byzantine frontier where constant raiding and ghazi (holy warrior) ideology attract fighters from across the Islamic world. His capture of Bursa (1326, shortly before his death) gives the Ottomans their first major city and a base for further expansion. Osman's son Orhan (1326-1362) crosses into Europe (1354) and captures Adrianople (1369), surrounding Constantinople on its landward side. The Ottoman threat that will end Byzantine history has begun.
1321 – 1354 The civil wars -- empire destroying itself Two catastrophic civil wars tear the empire apart. The first (1321-1328) pits Andronikos II against his grandson Andronikos III; the second (1341-1347) pits John VI Kantakouzenos against the regency for John V Palaiologos. The civil wars are not merely political: they destroy the agricultural economy, depopulate the countryside, consume the remaining treasury and -- most fatally -- bring in Turkish mercenaries who observe the empire's weaknesses at close range. The Kantakouzenos-Orhan alliance allows the Ottomans to cross into Europe. Byzantine civil wars are the Ottoman Empire's greatest enablers.
1341 – 1351 The Hesychast controversy -- theology in crisis The Hesychast controversy (1341-1351) is the last great theological debate of Byzantine history. Gregory Palamas defends the practice of Hesychasm -- contemplative prayer seeking direct experience of God's uncreated light (the light seen by the apostles at the Transfiguration). His opponent Barlaam of Calabria argues that God's essence is unknowable; the light on Tabor was created. The Council of Constantinople (1351) vindicates Palamas. The controversy is not merely academic: it divides the educated elite between those oriented toward western scholasticism (Barlaam's position) and those committed to distinctly Orthodox mystical theology. Palamism becomes Orthodox theological orthodoxy.
1347 – 1349 The Black Death -- Constantinople devastated The Black Death reaches Constantinople in 1347, probably via Genoese ships from Caffa in the Crimea. It kills approximately half the population of the city -- including the son of Emperor John VI Kantakouzenos, who describes the epidemic in his chronicle with the vividness of a witness. The plague strikes an empire already devastated by civil war and Ottoman encroachment. The demographic catastrophe ends any realistic prospect of military recovery: there are simply not enough people to man the walls, till the fields and pay the taxes. The Black Death is the final blow to Byzantine viability.
1354 Ottomans cross into Europe -- Gallipoli In 1354, an earthquake destroys the walls of Gallipoli on the European side of the Dardanelles. Suleyman, son of Orhan, occupies the ruined city and refuses to return it to Byzantium despite Byzantine protests. It is the first permanent Ottoman foothold in Europe. The strategic consequences are immediate: the Ottomans can now reinforce their European positions without depending on Byzantine permission to cross the straits. The fall of Adrianople (Edirne) follows in 1369; Constantinople is henceforth surrounded on its landward side by Ottoman territory.
1393 – 1402 Bayezid besieges Constantinople -- Timur intervenes Sultan Bayezid I (1389-1402) besieges Constantinople for seven years (1394-1402), cutting the city's food supply and demanding surrender. Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos tours Western Europe (1399-1402) appealing for help -- the spectacle of a Roman emperor begging in Paris and London is a measure of Byzantine degradation. The siege is broken not by Western help but by Timur's invasion of Anatolia: at the Battle of Ankara (1402), Timur defeats and captures Bayezid, triggering an Ottoman civil war. Constantinople gets a 50-year reprieve. Manuel II returns and presides over a cultural renaissance that knows it is working against time.
1422 Murad II besieges Constantinople Murad II (1421-1451) besieges Constantinople in 1422, the first serious Ottoman attempt since Bayezid. The siege fails -- the walls hold and Murad is called away by a dynastic crisis. But the siege demonstrates that the Ottoman threat has fully recovered from the Timurid disruption. Murad systematically reduces Byzantine territories: Thessaloniki (the empire's second city) falls in 1430. By 1440 the Byzantine Empire consists of Constantinople, the Despotate of the Morea (Peloponnese) and a few islands. The city's population has fallen to perhaps 40,000-50,000 -- less than a tenth of its Byzantine peak.
1439 Council of Florence -- union achieved, then rejected The Council of Florence (1439) achieves what centuries of negotiation could not: a formal union between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, signed by Emperor John VIII Palaiologos and most of the Byzantine bishops. The union is a political act of desperation -- John hopes that accepting papal supremacy will trigger a western Crusade to save Constantinople. The Decree of Union (Laetentur Caeli) is signed on 6 July 1439. The Orthodox population of Constantinople and the other Eastern churches overwhelmingly reject it: Grand Duke Notaras reportedly says he would rather see the Turkish turban in Constantinople than the Latin mitre.
1444 Battle of Varna -- the last Crusade fails The Battle of Varna (10 November 1444) is the last serious western military attempt to save Constantinople. A Hungarian-Polish Crusading army under King Vladislaus III of Poland and John Hunyadi marches through the Balkans but is catastrophically defeated by Murad II at Varna on the Black Sea coast. Vladislaus is killed; his head is displayed on a pike. The defeat ends western military engagement in the Balkans for a generation. There will be no further substantial western help for Constantinople before the fall. The city is on its own.
1451 – 1453 Mehmed II prepares -- Urbans cannon Mehmed II (1451-1481) comes to power at 19 determined to take Constantinople. He commissions the Hungarian engineer Urban to cast the largest bronze cannons ever made -- guns capable of firing stone balls weighing 600kg. He builds the fortress of Rumeli Hisari on the European side of the Bosphorus (1452) to control the straits. He assembles an army of 80,000-100,000 men and a fleet of 126 ships. He has studied the city's defences carefully and identifies the Blachernai section of the wall -- where the terrain reduces the triple wall to a single wall -- as the point of attack. The siege begins on 6 April 1453.
1453 Legacy -- the fall that shaped the modern world The fall of Constantinople has four major consequences. First, it drives Greek scholars west with their manuscripts, accelerating the Renaissance. Second, it closes the overland Silk Road, intensifying European pressure to find sea routes to Asia -- directly motivating Columbus (1492) and da Gama (1498). Third, it establishes the Ottoman Empire as the dominant power in southeastern Europe and the Middle East for four centuries. Fourth, it transmits Byzantine civilisation -- Orthodox Christianity, Roman law, Greek philosophy -- to Russia, which inherits the mantle: Moscow as the 'Third Rome.' The fall of Constantinople is not an ending. It is a transformation.
1453 Moscow -- the Third Rome After 1453, the Grand Duchy of Moscow claims to be the successor of the Byzantine Empire -- the 'Third Rome.' Ivan III marries Sophia Palaiologina (niece of the last Byzantine emperor, 1472), adopts the double-headed eagle as his emblem and the title Tsar (Caesar). The monk Philotheus of Pskov writes to Vasili III (c.1510): 'Two Romes have fallen, the third stands, and there shall be no fourth.' Russian Orthodoxy inherits Byzantine theological traditions, liturgical forms, iconography and imperial ideology. The Byzantine legacy lives on in the Russian Orthodox Church, the Cyrillic alphabet and the cultural identity of Orthodox Slavic civilisation.
1453 The Greek diaspora -- Byzantium dispersed The fall of Constantinople triggers a Greek diaspora across Europe. Scholars carrying manuscripts of ancient Greek texts reach Italy, where they teach Greek, translate classical authors and fuel the Platonic revival of the Florentine Academy. Cardinal Bessarion donates his library of Greek manuscripts to Venice -- the nucleus of the Biblioteca Marciana. George Trapezuntius, George Gemistos Plethon and many others contribute directly to the Italian Renaissance. The Byzantine transmission of classical knowledge -- preserved through the Dark Ages when Western Europe lost most of it -- is its final and perhaps greatest gift to Western civilisation.
1453 The siege -- 53 days The siege of Constantinople (6 April - 29 May 1453) lasts 53 days. The defenders number approximately 7,000 -- 5,000 Byzantines and 2,000 Genoese and Venetian volunteers under the Genoese captain Giovanni Giustiniani Longo. The Ottoman cannon batter the walls daily; the defenders repair them each night. Mehmed transports 70 ships overland on greased logs around the Genoese colony of Galata to enter the Golden Horn (22 April) -- one of the most audacious logistical feats in military history. The defenders hold for 53 days against odds of perhaps 15 to 1. They are the last Romans.
1453 Constantine XI -- the last emperor dies on the walls Constantine XI Palaiologos, the last Byzantine emperor, refuses multiple offers to surrender with his life guaranteed. On the night of 28-29 May 1453, he receives communion in Hagia Sophia, asks forgiveness of all present, and takes his place on the walls. When Giustiniani is wounded and carried off the walls (at the critical moment), the defence collapses. Constantine XI is last seen charging into the breach in the walls as Ottoman troops pour through. His body is never definitively identified. He is 49 years old. Mehmed reportedly weeps when he hears of his death, quoting the Persian poet Saadi: 'The spider weaves the curtains in the palace of the Caesars.'
1453 Mehmed enters -- the city falls On the morning of 29 May 1453, Mehmed II rides to Hagia Sophia. He stops a soldier breaking up the marble floor and is told the building is his personal property. He calls for an imam and performs the first Islamic prayer in the building. The call to prayer is heard from its minarets. Mehmed orders the mosaics plastered over. He walks through the deserted imperial palace and quotes a Persian couplet: 'The spider serves as gatekeeper in the halls of Chosroes; the owl plays sentinel on the towers of Afrasiab.' The Eastern Roman Empire, founded by Augustus Caesar, continued by Constantine, is extinguished after 1,123 years.
1461 Fall of Trebizond -- the last Byzantine state The Empire of Trebizond -- the last surviving Byzantine successor state, established after 1204 on the Black Sea coast -- falls to Mehmed II on 15 August 1461. Its emperor David Komnenos surrenders after a brief siege; he and his family are initially spared, then executed in 1463. Trebizond's fall is sometimes cited as the true end of Byzantine civilisation; the city's unique cultural tradition (it preserves aspects of Byzantine court culture that even Constantinople had abandoned) disappears. The Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople survives under Ottoman rule, maintaining a degree of ecclesiastical autonomy that preserves Greek cultural identity.
