Carlos Santana Timeline

Carlos Santana 25

1947 Carlos Santana Is Born Born in Autlan de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico Carlos Santana was born on July 20, 1947, in Autlan de Navarro, a small town in the Mexican state of Jalisco. His father, Jose Santana, was a professional mariachi violinist who supported the family playing in bands and became his son's first music teacher. The family later moved to Tijuana, exposing young Carlos to American rhythm and blues radio broadcast across the border. This early bicultural upbringing shaped the fusion of Latin and American musical traditions that would define his career.
1955 Trains as a Violinist Father Jose begins teaching him music Around age eight, Carlos began learning classical and mariachi violin under the instruction of his father, Jose Santana. Though he found the violin unsatisfying compared to the guitar he would later gravitate toward, the training gave him a foundation in music theory and performance discipline. His father's example as a working musician also showed him music could be a viable livelihood.
1957 Discovers the Blues Guitar Switches from violin to guitar in Tijuana After the family relocated to Tijuana, Carlos abandoned the violin in favor of the guitar, drawn in by American blues and rock and roll records from artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Ritchie Valens. As a young teenager he began performing in Tijuana's bars and strip clubs to earn money, developing the raw, expressive guitar tone that would become his signature. This period immersed him directly in blues phrasing years before he would fuse it with Latin rhythms.
1963 Family Relocates to San Francisco Santana joins his family in California Carlos's family moved to the Mission District of San Francisco while he initially stayed behind in Tijuana to keep earning money as a club musician. He rejoined his family in 1963, arriving in a city on the cusp of a psychedelic music explosion. The Bay Area's eclectic, boundary-pushing scene gave him direct exposure to blues, jazz, and rock musicians who would shape his evolving style.
1966 Forms the Santana Blues Band Founds his first band in San Francisco In 1966 Santana formed the Santana Blues Band with keyboardist Gregg Rolie, bassist David Brown, and other Bay Area musicians. The group distinguished itself from other rock acts of the era by incorporating congas and timbales alongside electric guitar and organ, blending blues-rock with Afro-Cuban and Latin percussion. This unusual instrumentation became the foundation of what critics would later call Latin rock.
1968 Signs with Columbia Records Band shortens name to Santana, signs to CBS Promoter Bill Graham, an early champion of the band after booking them at the Fillmore West, helped connect them with Columbia Records (CBS). The group shortened its name simply to Santana and signed a recording contract in 1968, setting the stage for their breakout the following year. Graham would remain a key advocate, later arranging their pivotal Woodstock appearance.
1969 Breakout Performance at Woodstock Santana electrifies the crowd with "Soul Sacrifice" On August 16, 1969, Santana delivered one of the most explosive sets of the Woodstock Festival, highlighted by a blistering extended performance of the instrumental "Soul Sacrifice" featuring drummer Michael Shrieve's celebrated solo. The band had not yet released an album, so most of the estimated 400,000 attendees and the millions who later saw the concert film were hearing them for the first time. The performance instantly established Santana as a major new force in American rock music.
1969 Debut Album "Santana" Released Self-titled debut reaches the Billboard Top 5 Released on August 30, 1969, the self-titled debut album Santana reached number four on the Billboard 200 and eventually went triple platinum. Singles "Evil Ways" and "Jingo" showcased the band's fusion of blues-rock guitar with Afro-Latin percussion. The album's success, amplified by the band's Woodstock appearance just two weeks earlier, launched Santana into national stardom.
1970 "Abraxas" Released Career-defining number one album Released on September 23, 1970, Abraxas topped the Billboard 200 and became the band's definitive early statement, featuring the medley "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" and a cover of Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va." The album fused rock, blues, salsa, and jazz into a sound that had never been heard on American radio at that scale. Abraxas was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and preserved in the National Recording Registry.
1971 "Santana III" Released Third album adds guitarist Neal Schon Santana III, released in September 1971, added a teenage Neal Schon on second guitar alongside percussionist Coke Escovedo, producing another number-one album with hits "Everybody's Everything" and "No One to Depend On." The record captured the band at its most raw and improvisational, but rising internal tensions over musical direction and lifestyle led to a significant lineup breakup shortly after its release.
1972 "Caravanserai" Released Bold turn toward instrumental jazz fusion Released on October 11, 1972, Caravanserai marked a deliberate departure from the hit-single format toward extended, largely instrumental jazz fusion influenced by John Coltrane and Miles Davis. The shift alienated some fans expecting another Abraxas but earned significant critical acclaim, and Santana has repeatedly named it among his favorite records of his career. The album signaled the beginning of a more spiritually and musically exploratory phase.
1973 "Love Devotion Surrender" with John McLaughlin Devotional fusion album with Mahavishnu guitarist Santana teamed with Mahavishnu Orchestra guitarist John McLaughlin, another follower of Sri Chinmoy, to record Love Devotion Surrender, a devotional jazz-fusion album released in 1973. Conceived partly as a tribute to John Coltrane, the record paired intense dual-guitar improvisation with meditative spiritual themes. It stands as one of the most explicit musical statements of Santana's Sri Chinmoy period.
1973 Becomes Devadip Carlos Santana Adopts spiritual name under guru Sri Chinmoy In 1973 Santana became a devoted follower of the Indian spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy, who gave him the name "Devadip," meaning "the lamp, light, and eye of God." Under Sri Chinmoy's influence, Santana abstained from drugs and alcohol and pursued a more meditative, disciplined approach to both life and music for over a decade. The spiritual period deeply shaped the introspective, exploratory direction of his mid-1970s recordings.
1973 Marries Deborah King Weds fellow musician in a Sri Chinmoy ceremony Santana married percussionist and keyboardist Deborah King in 1973 in a ceremony presided over by Sri Chinmoy. Their partnership coincided with the most spiritually focused and musically experimental period of his career.
1977 "Moonflower" Released Double album blends new and live material Released in October 1977, Moonflower was a double album mixing new studio recordings with live tracks and became one of the best-selling records of Santana's career. It included a hit cover of The Zombies' "She's Not There," which returned the band to mainstream radio prominence. The album went platinum and demonstrated Santana's ability to balance commercial appeal with continued musical exploration.
1981 "Zebop!" Released Pop-rock hit "Winning" reaches Top 40 Released in April 1981, Zebop! reflected a more radio-friendly pop-rock direction and produced the Top 40 hit "Winning," a cover of a Russ Ballard song. The album showed the band adapting to the sound of 1980s rock radio while retaining core Latin percussion elements. It became one of Santana's most commercially successful records of the decade.

The sweep confirmed the scale of Santana's commercial resurgence and introduced his music to listeners far removed from his 1960s and 1970s heyday. "Smooth" would go on to become one of the best-performing singles of the Billboard Hot 100's history.
2002 "Shaman" Released Follow-up continues guest-collaboration formula Released on October 22, 2002, Shaman continued the guest-artist collaboration model of Supernatural, featuring the hit single "The Game of Love" with Michelle Branch, which won a Grammy Award.
