Egypt: The Late Period Timeline

Egypt: The Late Period 50

1070 BC – 332 BC Animal cults -- the age of sacred beasts The Late Period sees the extraordinary flowering of animal cults -- the veneration of specific animals as incarnations of particular deities, carried to an extraordinary degree. At Memphis, the Apis bull (incarnation of Ptah-Osiris) is kept in luxury and worshipped as a god; at the Serapeum (discovered by Mariette in 1851), 64 sarcophagi contain the mummified bulls, the largest weighing over 60 tonnes. Similar cults exist for the Mnevis bull (Heliopolis), the Buchis bull (Armant), the sacred ibis (Thoth, at Hermopolis), the crocodile (Sobek, at Crocodilopolis), the cat (Bastet, at Bubastis) and dozens of other species. The scale is extraordinary: the Serapeum Gallery contains thousands of mummified cats; the ibis catacombs at Saqqara contain millions of mummified ibises. The animal cults are one of the aspects of Egyptian religion that most astonishes -- and disgusts -- Greek and Roman observers.
1070 BC – 332 BC Bubastis -- the cat festival Bubastis (Egyptian: Per-Bastet, "House of Bastet"), located in the eastern Delta at modern Tell Basta, is the cult centre of Bastet -- the cat goddess of protection, fertility, music and the household -- and the site of one of the most celebrated festivals in ancient Egypt. Herodotus describes the annual festival at Bubastis as attracting 700,000 pilgrims -- the largest gathering in Egypt -- who travel by boat, drinking and singing, to celebrate Bastet with music, dance, wine and general revelry. The precinct of Bastet at Bubastis is described by Herodotus as among the most beautiful in Egypt -- surrounded by water on all sides except the entrance, shaded by magnificent trees. The site contains a vast cat cemetery: thousands of mummified cats dedicated to Bastet have been found there, many sold to Victorian tourists and used as ballast in English ships.
1070 BC – 332 BC Demotic script -- the people's writing Demotic script (Egyptian: sekh shat, "document writing") develops in the Late Period as a further simplification of hieratic -- a highly cursive, ligated script used for administrative documents, legal texts, literary papyri and private letters. It first appears in the Twenty-fifth Dynasty (c.650 BC) and remains in use until the 5th century AD. Demotic is the script of ordinary educated Egyptians -- used for business contracts, letters, literary stories (the Setne Khamwas stories -- Egyptian fantasy fiction about a magician-prince who steals a magical book), wisdom literature and religious texts. The Rosetta Stone (196 BC) is inscribed in demotic as well as hieroglyphic and Greek -- its demotic inscription provided important evidence for Champollion's decipherment. Demotic literature is remarkably diverse, including adventure stories, erotic fiction, wisdom texts and astrological treatises.
1070 BC – 332 BC Egypt: The Late Period (1070–332 BC) The Late Period (1070-332 BC) spans 738 years -- longer than the entire history of the Roman Empire -- during which Egypt experiences cycles of fragmentation, foreign domination, brilliant cultural renaissance and ultimate absorption into the Persian and then Macedonian empires. The Third Intermediate Period (1070-664 BC) sees Egypt divided between priestly dynasties at Thebes, pharaonic dynasties in the Delta, Libyan warlords (the 22nd-24th Dynasties) and eventually Nubian conquerors (the 25th Dynasty). The Late Period proper (664-332 BC) includes the Saite Renaissance (26th Dynasty, 664-525 BC) -- a deliberately archaic cultural revival of extraordinary brilliance -- followed by two Persian conquests (525 BC and 343 BC) and Egypt's liberation by Alexander the Great (332 BC). Throughout these upheavals, Egyptian culture and religion prove remarkably resilient -- adapting to foreign rulers while maintaining their core identity.
1070 BC – 332 BC Egyptian Jews -- a community in the Delta The Jewish community in Egypt begins in the Late Period (possibly as early as the 7th century BC) and grows significantly in subsequent centuries. The Elephantine Papyri -- a remarkable archive of Aramaic documents (500-399 BC) from the Jewish military colony on Elephantine Island at the First Cataract -- reveal a complete Jewish community: soldiers serving the Persian pharaohs, merchants, landowners, and their wives, children and slaves, practising a form of Judaism that includes worship at a temple of Yahweh (alongside other deities). When their temple is destroyed by Egyptian rivals (411 BC) they write to the Persian governor and to the high priest in Jerusalem requesting permission to rebuild -- demonstrating connections to both. The Elephantine community is the best-documented Jewish diaspora community of the pre-Hellenistic period.
1070 BC – 332 BC Herodotus in Egypt -- the first Egyptologist Herodotus of Halicarnassus (c.484-425 BC), the "Father of History," visits Egypt (c.450 BC) and devotes the entire second book of his Histories to its description -- creating the first systematic account of Egyptian culture, history and religion by a foreign observer. His observations are a mixture of genuine first-hand reportage (the annual Nile flood and its agricultural importance; the technique of mummification; the animals kept in temples), hearsay and confusion (his accounts of the pyramids and their builders contain significant errors). His most famous observation -- "Egypt is the gift of the Nile" -- is one of the most quoted sentences in ancient literature. Herodotus's Egypt is a mirror of Greek fascination with the ancient, the wise and the exotic -- he presents Egypt as a repository of ancient wisdom from which Greek civilisation has learned.
1070 BC – 332 BC Late Period legacy -- resilience and transformation The Late Period's legacy is the proof of Egyptian cultural resilience. Three foreign conquests (Libyan, Nubian, Persian, and finally Macedonian), 738 years of political fragmentation and external threat, and yet Egyptian culture not only survives but in the Saite Renaissance reaches heights of artistic refinement that equal any previous period. The animal cults, the temple building programme, the demotic literature, the continued production of funerary texts and mummification equipment -- all continue without interruption through the political changes. Foreign rulers (Libyan, Nubian, Persian, Macedonian) adopt Egyptian culture, not the reverse. When Alexander arrives in 332 BC, he does not conquer a dying civilisation but a living one, with a tradition and an identity so strong that it absorbs its conquerors and transforms them into pharaohs. The Ptolemies are its last, brilliant expression.
1070 BC – 332 BC Late Period temples -- the architectural legacy The Late Period and Ptolemaic periods produce some of the most complete and best-preserved temples in Egypt -- not because they are the finest (Old and New Kingdom temples are generally considered superior) but because they are the most recently built and therefore least destroyed by subsequent reuse and quarrying. The key Late Period temples: the Hibis Temple at Kharga Oasis (dedicated to Amun, built by Darius I); the Amun temple at Karnak (with Taharqa's colonnade and the kiosk of Taharqa); the additions of the Thirtieth Dynasty pharaohs at Philae, Karnak, Dendera and dozens of other sites. The Ptolemaic temples at Edfu, Dendera, Kom Ombo, Esna, and Philae are so complete that their entire layout -- sanctuary, hypostyle hall, vestibule, pronaos, pylon, forecourt and enclosure wall -- can be studied and experienced as the ancient worshippers experienced them.
1070 BC – 332 BC Naukratis -- the Greek city in Egypt Naukratis (modern Kom Gi'eif), established by Amasis II (c.570 BC) in the western Delta as the official Greek trading colony, is the first permanent Greek settlement in Egypt and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the ancient world. Greeks from Miletus, Aegina, Samos, Rhodes and other city-states settle at Naukratis, trade Egyptian grain and linen for Greek silver, wine and olive oil, and build their own temples (the Hellenion -- a joint Greek sanctuary, unique in the ancient world). Naukratis is the conduit through which Egypt's influence flows into the Archaic Greek world: Greek architects learn the column from Egypt (the Doric order may derive from the Egyptian bundled-papyrus column); Greek sculptors learn the standing frontal kouros from Egyptian standing statues; Solon, Thales and Pythagoras reputedly study in Egypt.
1070 BC – 332 BC Osiris at Abydos -- the eternal pilgrimage The Osiris cult at Abydos reaches its greatest intensity in the Late Period -- the annual Mysteries of Osiris (a dramatic reenactment of the god's death, dismemberment, resurrection and triumph over Seth) attract pilgrims from throughout Egypt and the Mediterranean world. The principal ritual involves a sacred bark procession from the Osiris temple to his "tomb" (the Osireion) at the back of Seti I's mortuary temple -- a journey reenacting Osiris's funeral -- with actors playing Horus, Isis, Thoth and Anubis. The Osiris cult influences Greek mystery religions (particularly the Eleusinian Mysteries and the Orphic mysteries), which adopt similar themes of divine death and resurrection. Through the mystery religions, Osiris's resurrection theology ultimately influences early Christianity -- whether directly or as a parallel development in the broader Near Eastern religious matrix is debated.
1070 BC – 332 BC Philae -- the last active Egyptian temple Philae (Egyptian: Pilak), an island at the First Cataract of the Nile near modern Aswan, is one of the most beautiful temple sites in Egypt -- and the last place where traditional Egyptian religion was actively practiced. The island's main temple complex, dedicated to Isis and largely built in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods (305 BC-298 AD), contains the last datable hieroglyphic inscription in Egypt (394 AD) and the last known demotic inscription (452 AD). The priests of Isis at Philae continue to perform the traditional rites until the emperor Justinian orders the temple closed and the priests arrested (c.535 AD). The Philae complex, threatened by the Aswan Dam, was moved to the nearby island of Agilkia in a UNESCO rescue operation (1972-1980) that parallels the Abu Simbel rescue. Philae represents the very end of 3,500 years of temple worship.
1070 BC – 332 BC The Delta in the Late Period -- a cosmopolitan world The Nile Delta in the Late Period is the most cosmopolitan region in the ancient world -- a polyglot, multiethnic territory where Egyptians, Libyans, Greeks, Canaanites, Jews, Phoenicians, Nubians and Persians live and trade side by side. The major Delta cities: Tanis (royal capital of the Twenty-first Dynasty, with silver pharaoh tombs); Bubastis (Bastet's city and the Libyan Twenty-second Dynasty capital); Sais (capital of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty and centre of Neith worship); Naukratis (the Greek trading colony); Avaris/Pi-Ramesses (the Hyksos capital and Ramesside Delta capital, now Tell el-Dab'a); Daphnae (the Greek mercenary garrison). The Delta's cosmopolitanism -- so different from the Egyptian cultural heartland of Upper Egypt -- prepares the ground for the Ptolemaic synthesis of Greek and Egyptian culture that produces one of the ancient world's most creative civilisations.
1070 BC – 332 BC The God's Wife of Amun -- female theocratic power The "God's Wife of Amun" (Hemet-Netjer Amun) is a religious office of extraordinary political importance in the Third Intermediate and Late Periods -- a royal woman who serves as the earthly consort of the god Amun and thereby controls the vast wealth of the Amun temple at Karnak. From the Twenty-second Dynasty onwards, the God's Wife adopts a successor by a formal legal act of adoption (always a daughter of the ruling pharaoh), effectively creating a parallel female rulership of Upper Egypt. The God's Wives have their own estates, their own administration and their own funerary complexes at Medinet Habu (where the chapels of Amenirdis I, Shepenupet II, Nitocris and Ankhnesneferibre represent some of the finest Late Period architecture). Through the adoption mechanism, successive pharaohs extend their political control to Thebes without military campaigns.
1070 BC – 332 BC The Libyans of the Delta -- becoming Egyptian The process by which Libyan settlers in the Delta became Egyptian pharaohs is one of the most fascinating examples of cultural assimilation in the ancient world. Libyan mercenaries and traders settle in the Delta from the New Kingdom onwards; by the Third Intermediate Period, their chiefs control whole Delta nomes. The Libyan chiefs adopt Egyptian titles, Egyptian gods, Egyptian burial customs and Egyptian art -- while maintaining Libyan clan names and some distinctive practices. The Twenty-second Dynasty founder Sheshonq I has a thoroughly Egyptian throne name (Hedjkheperre) but a Libyan personal name. By the time his dynasty is fully established, the distinction between "Libyan" and "Egyptian" has largely dissolved. This pattern -- foreigners entering Egypt, adopting Egyptian culture and becoming Egyptian -- repeats throughout Egyptian history with Libyans, Nubians, Persians, Greeks and Romans.
1070 BC – 664 BC The Third Intermediate Period -- divided Egypt The Third Intermediate Period (1070-664 BC) is the most complex and confusing period of Egyptian history -- 406 years in which Egypt is simultaneously ruled by multiple competing dynasties, each claiming legitimacy but none controlling the whole country. The basic structure: Upper Egypt is governed by the High Priests of Amun at Thebes (who effectively rule as kings after Herihor); Lower Egypt is ruled by the Twenty-first Dynasty pharaohs at Tanis. This divide is followed by the Libyan Twenty-second Dynasty (Bubastis), which reunifies Egypt briefly before fragmentation resumes with the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Dynasties. The period ends with the Nubian 25th Dynasty's conquest of Egypt c.747 BC. Despite the political chaos, Egyptian culture, religion and art continue to develop -- the animal cults reach their peak; the artistic "Libyan style" produces distinctive bronzes.
1070 BC – 945 BC The Twenty-first Dynasty at Tanis -- pharaohs in silver The Twenty-first Dynasty (1070-945 BC), ruling from Tanis in the eastern Delta, is one of the most archaeologically significant dynasties of the Late Period -- principally because their royal tombs were discovered intact at Tanis in 1939 by Pierre Montet. Like Tutankhamun's tomb but far less publicised (the discovery coincided with the Nazi invasion of France and received little attention), the Tanis tombs contain silver coffins, golden masks, gold and silver vessels, and jewellery of extraordinary craftsmanship. The silver coffin of Psusennes I is the finest silver object from ancient Egypt -- Psusennes, who reigned for 46 years, was one of the longest-reigning pharaohs in history. The Tanis tombs reveal a wealthy, sophisticated court culture continuing the New Kingdom traditions in a reduced political context.
1070 BC – 332 BC The scarab seal -- administrative magic The administrative scarab (a beetle-shaped seal with a flat base inscribed with a name, title or text) is the most common inscribed object in ancient Egypt and the most important tool for dating archaeological layers in the Late Period. The practice of using scarab seals as administrative stamps begins in the Middle Kingdom and continues through the Ptolemaic period. Commemorative scarabs (large scarabs recording specific royal events, issued in editions of hundreds or thousands) serve as a royal news medium: Amenhotep III issues large commemorative scarabs recording his lion hunts, his marriage to Tiye and the construction of his pleasure lake. "Heart scarabs" (large green stone scarabs placed on the mummy's chest) are inscribed with Chapter 30 of the Book of the Dead -- a spell commanding the heart not to testify against the deceased at the judgment. Over 100,000 inscribed scarabs are now in museum collections worldwide.
945 BC – 715 BC The Libyan dynasties -- foreign pharaohs from the west The Twenty-second Dynasty (945-715 BC), founded by Sheshonq I (the biblical Shishak), is the first of the Libyan dynasties -- pharaohs of Berber-Libyan origin whose families had settled in the Delta over previous centuries and gradually acquired political power. Sheshonq I briefly reunifies Egypt, campaigns in Canaan (c.925 BC) and sacks Jerusalem (mentioned in 1 Kings 14:25-26 and 2 Chronicles 12:1-9 -- one of the most secure synchronisms between Egyptian and biblical chronology), and builds extensively at Karnak. After Sheshonq III, the dynasty fragments into competing branches (the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Dynasties), with multiple simultaneous pharaohs ruling different parts of Egypt. The Libyan period is characterised by powerful local magnates, extensive bronze production and the continued development of the animal cults.
747 BC – 332 BC Napatan pyramids -- Egypt's southern legacy The Nubian pyramids of Nuri, el-Kurru and Meroe, built by the rulers of the Kingdom of Kush from the 25th Dynasty onwards (c.747 BC-350 AD), are Egypt's most extraordinary architectural legacy -- a tradition of pyramid building that continues for 1,000 years after Egypt itself abandons the form. The Nubian pyramids are different from their Egyptian predecessors: steeper (approximately 65-70° slope versus 51° for the Great Pyramid), smaller in base (none exceeds 30 metres in width), and often built over cut-rock underground chambers reached by an external staircase. They are decorated with Meroitic hieroglyphic inscriptions (a modified version of Egyptian hieroglyphs, still only partially deciphered). The approximately 255 known Nubian pyramids -- more than in Egypt itself -- represent the most enduring legacy of the Egyptian architectural tradition beyond Egypt's borders.
747 BC – 656 BC The 25th Dynasty -- Nubian pharaohs rule Egypt The Twenty-fifth Dynasty (c.747-656 BC) is one of the most remarkable episodes in Egyptian history -- Nubian kings from the Kingdom of Kush (centred at Napata in modern Sudan) conquer Egypt and rule as authentic, devout pharaohs who present themselves as restorers of traditional Egyptian religion and culture. The founder Piye (Piankhi, c.747-716 BC) records his conquest in a stele that is one of the most vivid military narratives in Egyptian history -- including his anger at the filth of the Egyptian vassal kings who come to surrender to him: he refuses to meet most of them face-to-face because they are "uncircumcised and fish-eaters." The Nubian pharaohs build pyramids (a form abandoned in Egypt 1,000 years earlier), restore temples, commission traditional Egyptian-style art and govern with meticulous respect for Egyptian customs.
747 BC – 656 BC The Kingdom of Kush -- Egypt's southern twin The Kingdom of Kush, centred at Napata near the Fourth Cataract of the Nile in modern Sudan, is simultaneously Egypt's most important trading partner, military rival and cultural heir. Founded in the Second Intermediate Period as Egyptian New Kingdom control of Nubia weakened, the kingdom grows to become a major power in its own right -- adopting Egyptian hieroglyphs (developing its own Meroitic script later), building Egyptian-style temples (Gebel Barkal, the sacred mountain at Napata), practicing Egyptian royal burial customs (including pyramids -- the Nubian pyramids of the 25th Dynasty rulers are the tallest surviving pyramids in Africa) and eventually conquering Egypt. After the 25th Dynasty is expelled from Egypt (c.656 BC), the Kushite kings retreat to Nubia and rule from Napata, then Meroe -- a kingdom that survives until 350 AD.
690 BC – 664 BC Taharqa -- the greatest Nubian pharaoh Taharqa (c.690-664 BC) is the greatest of the Nubian pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty -- the ruler who extends Egyptian-Kushite power to its maximum extent, campaigns in the Levant (he is the "Tirhakah king of Ethiopia" of 2 Kings 19:9 who attempts to relieve Jerusalem from Sennacherib's Assyrian siege), builds extensively throughout Egypt and Nubia, and rules one of the largest empires in Egyptian history. His building programme is extraordinary: he adds a colonnaded hall to Karnak (the foundations survive), builds a temple at Kawa in Nubia, restores and extends temples at Memphis, Thebes and throughout Egypt. His capital at Tanis and his permanent court at Memphis reflect the Egyptian character of his rule. He is driven back to Nubia by Assyrian invasions (667 BC) but retains control of Upper Egypt until his death.
671 BC – 664 BC Assyrian invasion -- the world's first superpower strikes The Assyrian Empire under Esarhaddon (671 BC) and Ashurbanipal (667 BC) invades Egypt -- the first time in Egyptian history that a Near Eastern power successfully conquers the entire country. Egypt's conquest by Assyria is a seismic event in ancient history: the world's greatest military power meets the world's oldest civilisation. Esarhaddon's invasion (671 BC) captures Memphis, loots the palace and forces the Nubian pharaoh Taharqa to flee. Ashurbanipal's campaign (667 BC) advances further, briefly capturing Thebes (664 BC) -- the only time in history that Thebes is occupied by a foreign army (recorded in Nahum 3:8 as a prophetic parallel: "Are you better than No-Amon [Thebes] that sat by the rivers?"). The Assyrian occupation is brief and indirect -- they rule through Egyptian vassals -- but it demonstrates Egypt's vulnerability and ends the 25th Dynasty.
664 BC – 332 BC Apries -- the pharaoh who lost his army Apries (Hophra, 589-570 BC), the fourth pharaoh of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty, is remembered primarily for two military disasters that ultimately cost him his throne. He campaigns in Libya to support Libyan clients against Cyrene (a Greek colony) and suffers a devastating defeat -- his Egyptian army is nearly destroyed. When the survivors return and blame Apries for sending them to their deaths, he sends his general Amasis to restore order; Amasis is instead proclaimed pharaoh by the discontented troops. After a civil war, Apries flees to the Persians (who help him return briefly) but is captured and killed (570 BC). Apries is the pharaoh who "helps" Jerusalem against Nebuchadnezzar (according to Jeremiah 37:5-7) but withdraws, leading to Jerusalem's fall in 587 BC -- an event of enormous significance in Jewish history.
664 BC – 332 BC Egyptian circumnavigation of Africa -- Necho II's expedition The circumnavigation of Africa commissioned by Necho II (c.600 BC) -- if historical -- would be one of the most remarkable voyages in ancient history. Herodotus (Histories 4.42) records that Necho II sent a Phoenician fleet from the Red Sea, with orders to sail south along the African coast, round the continent and return through the Pillars of Hercules (Strait of Gibraltar) to Egypt. He adds: "On their return they declared -- I for my part do not believe them, but perhaps others may -- that in sailing round Libya [Africa] they had the sun upon their right hand." This precise observation (the sun is to the north in the southern hemisphere, hence on their right when sailing westward) is the strongest evidence for the voyage's authenticity -- a detail too accurate to be invented by anyone who had not crossed the equator. The voyage, if completed, predates Vasco da Gama by 2,100 years.
664 BC – 332 BC Flinders Petrie -- the father of Egyptology Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) is the founder of modern scientific Egyptology -- the archaeologist who transforms the discipline from treasure-hunting into systematic stratigraphic excavation. Working in Egypt from 1880 to 1926, he excavates Abydos, Amarna, Naqada (identifying the Predynastic period), Kahun, Gurob, Medum, Lahun and dozens of other sites. His fundamental innovation: recording the exact context of every object found (what layer, what association, what orientation) rather than simply collecting attractive objects. He develops sequence dating (seriation) -- using changes in pottery styles to date archaeological layers in the absence of written records. His 97 books, over 1,000 articles and hundreds of thousands of objects (now in the Petrie Museum, UCL) represent the most comprehensive single archaeological output in history. He is buried in Jerusalem; his head is separately preserved at the Royal College of Surgeons, London.
664 BC – 332 BC Greek mercenaries -- Egypt's professional soldiers From Psamtik I (664 BC) onwards, Egyptian pharaohs employ Greek and Carian mercenaries as professional soldiers alongside their Egyptian conscript forces. The Greek mercenaries are better equipped, better trained and more reliable than Egyptian conscripts for set-piece battles -- armed with the hoplite panoply (large round shield, bronze breastplate, greaves, spear and short sword) that proves decisive against Near Eastern opponents. The mercenary garrison at Daphnae (Tell Defenneh) in the eastern Delta is the largest Greek military settlement in Egypt. Greek mercenaries are also employed by Egypt's enemies: when Cambyses invades in 525 BC, the Greek general Polycrates defects to the Persian side. Jeremiah 43:8-10 describes Egyptian Jews (refugees who fled Jerusalem after its Babylonian conquest) living alongside Greek mercenaries at Daphnae.
664 BC – 332 BC Inaros -- the rebel hero Inaros, son of Psamtik (c.460 BC), is the Libyan prince who leads the most successful Egyptian revolt against Persian rule in the First Persian Period -- a revolt that captures Memphis, kills the Persian satrap Achaemenes (brother of King Xerxes) and holds out for six years with Athenian naval support. Inaros appeals to Athens (which is at war with Persia) for assistance; an Athenian fleet of 200 triremes enters the Nile Delta and helps Inaros control most of Egypt for four years (460-456 BC). The Persians respond with a massive force (400,000 men according to Diodorus -- certainly exaggerated) that defeats the Athenian-Egyptian force at the Battle of Prosopitis (456 BC). Inaros is captured through treachery and crucified at Susa. The revolt is the most serious threat to Persian power in Egypt and inspires all subsequent Egyptian resistance.
664 BC – 332 BC Late Period bronze statues -- votive art The Late Period (especially the Twenty-sixth Dynasty and later) produces an extraordinary quantity and quality of bronze figurines and statues -- votive objects dedicated to the gods at temple precincts, given as offerings by individuals seeking divine favour. Hundreds of thousands of bronze figurines survive from this period: Osiris, Isis and Horus (the most common), Bastet, Sekhmet, Thoth, Ptah and dozens of other deities. The technical quality of the best Late Period bronzes is extraordinary -- lost-wax casting of considerable complexity, inlaid with gold and silver, with hieroglyphic inscriptions. Large ceremonial bronzes (statues of pharaohs, divine barks, cult objects) of this period are among the finest metalwork of the ancient world. The sheer number of bronzes reflects the democratisation of temple worship -- individuals of modest means could afford small votive figurines.
664 BC – 332 BC Nekhthorheb -- rebuilding after the Persians Nectanebo I (Nekhthorheb, 380-362 BC), founder of the Thirtieth Dynasty, undertakes the most extensive temple building programme since Ramesses II -- a systematic effort to assert Egyptian cultural identity and divine legitimacy after decades of Persian rule. He builds or adds to temples at: Philae (the first substantial temple on the island), Karnak (the outermost pylon and the "Nectanebo kiosk"), Memphis, Abydos, Bubastis, Tanis, Sebennytos, Sohag, Esna, Edfu and dozens of smaller sites. His temples are characterised by fine limestone reliefs in a style that deliberately recalls the Old and Middle Kingdom canon -- the Saite archaism, taken to its logical conclusion. The Thirtieth Dynasty temples are the last major building programme by native Egyptian pharaohs; their completion is continued by the Ptolemies.
664 BC – 610 BC Psamtik I -- founder of the Saite dynasty Psamtik I (664-610 BC) is the founder and greatest ruler of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty -- the pharaoh who expels the Assyrian forces (taking advantage of Ashurbanipal's engagements elsewhere), reunifies Egypt for the first time in centuries and begins the Saite Renaissance. He achieves reunification through diplomacy rather than war: a Nubian "wife of Amun" at Thebes adopts his daughter Nitocris as her successor, extending Saite control to Upper Egypt without a military campaign. He employs Greek and Carian mercenaries (settled at the garrison town of Daphnae) -- the most extensive use of foreign mercenaries in Egyptian history. His reign of 54 years is the longest in the Late Period and sees the beginning of the most profound cultural and artistic revival since the Middle Kingdom.
664 BC – 332 BC Sais -- the Delta capital Sais (Egyptian: Zau), located in the western Nile Delta, is the capital and cult city of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty -- the city of the goddess Neith (a creator deity of great antiquity, patron of weaving, hunting and warfare) and the seat of the Saite pharaohs. Ancient visitors describe Sais as a magnificent city: the temple of Neith is vast; the royal tombs are within the temple enclosure; the Mysteries of Osiris (an annual reenactment of the god's death and resurrection) are performed there with great ceremony. Plato (c.427-348 BC) in his Timaeus locates the story of Atlantis in a conversation between Solon and Egyptian priests at Sais -- priests who are said to possess records 9,000 years older than Solon's visit. Today virtually nothing remains of ancient Sais -- it has been completely quarried and destroyed over the centuries.
664 BC – 525 BC Saite art -- archaism and perfection The artistic production of the Twenty-sixth (Saite) Dynasty is among the finest of any period in Egyptian history -- a consciously archaic style that combines the classical conventions of the Old and Middle Kingdoms with new standards of technical refinement. Saite sculpture is distinguished by: an extremely smooth, polished surface finish (sometimes described as "greasy") achieved by rubbing the stone with fine sand and oil; precise, formal features that recall Old Kingdom idealism; an elegant, slightly elongated body proportion; and the use of hard stones (greywacke, quartzite, granite) worked to a degree of precision not achieved since the Fourth Dynasty. The "green schist" faces of Saite private statues -- smooth, serene, with a barely perceptible archaic smile -- are among the most beautiful works of art from the ancient world. The style is widely influential, directly inspiring some of the earliest Greek sculpture.
664 BC – 332 BC Solon visits Egypt -- the wisdom tradition The Athenian lawgiver Solon (c.638-558 BC) reportedly visits Egypt during the reign of Amasis II (c.570-526 BC) and spends time with the priests at Sais -- an encounter recorded by Plato in the Timaeus and Critias. During this visit, according to Plato, an elderly priest tells Solon that Greeks are children compared to Egyptians: "You have no belief rooted in old tradition and no knowledge hoary with age... you Greeks are always children; you have no ancient opinion... nor any tradition of knowledge whitened with time." It is during this visit that the priest describes Atlantis -- the great civilisation that supposedly sank beneath the ocean 9,000 years before. Whether historical or literary invention, the Solon-in-Egypt story encapsulates the Greek view of Egypt as a repository of ancient wisdom that makes their own civilization seem young.
664 BC – 332 BC The Apis bull -- a living god at Memphis The Apis bull (Egyptian: Hapi-ankh, "Living Apis"), kept in the temple of Ptah at Memphis, is the most important sacred animal in Egypt -- an individual bull selected by specific markings (black body with a white triangular patch on the forehead, a "vulture" shape on the back, a scarab under the tongue, double hairs on the tail) and worshipped as the living incarnation of Ptah-Osiris for the duration of its natural life. The bull is attended by priests, fed by hand, allowed to mate with specially selected cows (the calves are killed at birth), and its movements are observed for oracular significance. When it dies (after a maximum of 25 years -- if it survives longer, it is killed), there is a national period of mourning lasting 40-70 days, the bull is mummified with the same care as a pharaoh, and its enormous stone sarcophagus (the largest are 3.7 metres long and weigh 62 tonnes) is installed in the Serapeum.
664 BC – 332 BC The Oracle of Amun -- divine decisions Egyptian oracles -- divine judgments delivered through the movement of the god's statue carried on a processional bark during festivals -- are attested from the New Kingdom but reach their peak importance in the Third Intermediate Period and Late Period, when the High Priests of Amun at Thebes govern through oracular decisions. The oracle works by presenting two options to the god's statue; its movement forward (or backward) signifies the god's choice. The Oracle of Amun at Siwa Oasis (in the Libyan desert) is Egypt's most famous oracle in the Late Period -- consulted by Croesus of Lydia, Cimon the Athenian, and (most famously) Alexander the Great (331 BC), who asks the oracle whether he is the son of a god and receives confirmation. The Siwa oracle's declaration of Alexander's divine sonship is one of the pivotal moments in Hellenistic history.
664 BC – 525 BC The Saite Renaissance -- revival and perfection The Twenty-sixth (Saite) Dynasty (664-525 BC), ruling from Sais in the western Delta, is one of the most culturally brilliant periods in Egyptian history -- a consciously archaic revival that looks back to the Old and Middle Kingdoms for artistic, literary and religious inspiration, producing work of extraordinary quality. The Saite pharaohs (Psamtik I through Amasis) reunify Egypt after Assyrian withdrawal, employ Greek mercenaries (famously at Naukratis in the Delta), trade with the entire Mediterranean world and commission art that combines the most refined aspects of the Old and New Kingdom traditions. Saite sculpture is among the finest in all of Egyptian art -- the surfaces of limestone and hard stone statues polished to a mirror finish, the features precisely rendered. The period also sees the compilation of the Book of the Dead into its canonical form.
664 BC – 332 BC The Saqqara Serapeum -- underground miracle The Serapeum at Saqqara, the underground burial complex of the Apis bulls of Memphis, is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Egypt -- discovered by Auguste Mariette in November 1851 after a clue from Strabo's description led him to a sphinx-lined avenue in the desert. The Serapeum consists of two long underground galleries cut in the limestone bedrock, lined with enormous burial chambers, each containing a massive granite or basalt sarcophagus (the latest weighing up to 62 tonnes) in which an Apis bull was mummified and interred. The galleries span from the New Kingdom (the "Lesser Vaults," sealed since Ramesses II and found with some objects intact) to the Ptolemaic period (the "Greater Vaults"). Mariette's discovery of one intact burial chamber with the bull's mummy, jewellery and offering stelae was a sensation; most chambers had been robbed. The stelae placed by private individuals in the dromos (entrance avenue) constitute an important archive of Late Period personal names and dates.
664 BC – 332 BC The Satrap Stele -- Persian patronage of Egypt The Satrap Stele (311 BC), erected by the satrap (later pharaoh) Ptolemy I, records a royal grant restoring temple lands to the god Buto (Wadjet) that had been seized by the Persian king Cambyses. The stele's ideological content is revealing: Ptolemy presents himself as restoring Ma'at after Persian impiety, using standard Egyptian royal rhetoric (including the claim that Cambyses stole the temple's lands -- which modern scholars consider propaganda rather than history). The stele demonstrates how quickly the Macedonian Ptolemy adopted Egyptian royal conventions -- less than 10 years after Alexander's conquest, his successor is already commissioning Egyptian hieroglyphic monuments in the traditional style. The Satrap Stele is a key document for understanding the transition from Persian to Macedonian rule and the ideological toolkit of legitimacy in Late Period Egypt.
664 BC – 332 BC Wedjat eye -- the eye of Horus amulet The wedjat ("the sound one," also called the "Eye of Horus" or "Eye of Ra") is the most common and potent amulet in ancient Egypt -- a symbol of protection, healing and wholeness derived from the myth of Horus's eye, which is torn out by Seth and restored by Thoth. The restoration of the eye symbolises the healing of all wounds, the making whole of what was broken. The wedjat is placed on mummies (particularly over the incision through which the organs are removed) and worn by the living as protective jewellery. It is used as a medical symbol -- the six parts of the wedjat correspond to the six fractions (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64) used in prescription measurements, with a mathematically significant total of 63/64 (the missing 1/64 representing the part "lost" by Horus that Thoth makes up with magic). The wedjat persists as a popular symbol worldwide.
610 BC – 595 BC Necho II -- the circumnavigation of Africa Necho II (610-595 BC) is one of the most ambitious and outward-looking pharaohs of the Late Period -- the ruler who reportedly sends a Phoenician fleet to circumnavigate Africa (c.600 BC), begins a canal connecting the Nile to the Red Sea (later completed by Darius I), and battles the Neo-Babylonian Empire at Carchemish (605 BC). The circumnavigation of Africa -- reported by Herodotus (who is skeptical but includes a detail that authenticates it: the sailors report that the sun was on their right when sailing westward, i.e. they had crossed the equator into the southern hemisphere) -- would be, if true, one of the greatest voyages of exploration in the ancient world. Necho II also defeats King Josiah of Judah at Megiddo (609 BC) -- an event recorded in 2 Kings 23:29 -- one of the clearest synchronisms between Egyptian and biblical chronology.
570 BC – 526 BC Amasis II -- the wine-loving pharaoh who loved Greeks Amasis II (570-526 BC) is the most cosmopolitan pharaoh of the Late Period -- a usurper of modest origin who cultivates relationships with Greek city-states, establishes Naukratis as the official Greek trading colony in Egypt, donates generously to Greek sanctuaries (Delphi, Lindos, Samos), and marries a Greek woman from Cyrene (Ladice). Herodotus describes him as a man who drank and joked all day until noon, then worked seriously in the afternoon -- a personality radically different from the solemn divine pharaohs of tradition. He is Egypt's link to the wider Archaic Greek world -- the pharaoh contemporary with Solon, Thales and Pythagoras (all of whom reportedly visit Egypt during this period). His 44-year reign is the most prosperous of the Late Period; his death one year before Cambyses' invasion saves him from seeing Egypt's conquest.
525 BC Cambyses conquers Egypt -- the First Persian Period The Persian king Cambyses II conquers Egypt at the Battle of Pelusium (525 BC), ending the Twenty-sixth Dynasty. The conquest is facilitated by a Greek mercenary commander (Polycrates) who defects to the Persian side and by the involvement of the Arab king who supplies water across the Sinai desert. Cambyses is crowned pharaoh in the traditional manner at Memphis and treats the Apis bull's death with appropriate reverence -- contradicting Herodotus's claim that he stabbed the sacred bull in a fit of impiety. The First Persian Period (525-404 BC, the Twenty-seventh Dynasty) introduces Persian administrative methods (the satrapy system) but largely preserves Egyptian religious life and uses Egyptian scribes and administrators. Persian rule is resented by Egyptians but far less brutal than traditional sources suggest.
525 BC – 332 BC Persian governors and Egyptian culture -- uneasy coexistence The Persian period in Egypt (525-404 BC and 343-332 BC) is characterised by a fundamental tension between Persian administrative control and Egyptian cultural resistance. The Persians rule Egypt efficiently -- using the existing nome system, employing Egyptian scribes, maintaining the canal and irrigation infrastructure -- but impose the satrapy system, collect tribute for Persepolis, and generally treat Egypt as a resource to be exploited rather than a civilisation to be respected. Egyptian reaction: persistent revolts (at least three major revolts in the First Persian Period), subtle cultural resistance (maintaining Egyptian religious practices, refusing Persian artistic influence), and an ideological narrative of Persian misrule that shapes the way Egyptian sources describe the period. The Persian period, despite its brevity, represents a fundamental challenge to the concept of Egypt as a divinely ordered, self-sufficient civilisation.
521 BC – 486 BC Darius I in Egypt -- the benevolent conqueror Darius I (521-486 BC) is the most constructive of the Persian rulers of Egypt -- a "pharaoh" who builds temples, completes the Nile-Red Sea canal (begun by Necho II), codifies Egyptian law and generally presents himself as a legitimate successor to the pharaonic tradition. His temple at Hibis in the Kharga Oasis is the best-preserved temple of the Late Period -- a relatively small but exceptionally fine building whose painted reliefs show Darius performing the traditional rituals of an Egyptian pharaoh. A statue of Darius in Egyptian style (discovered in 1972 at Susa in Iran) shows him in full pharaonic costume with an Egyptian inscription on his kilt and a Persian inscription confirming he is the king of Egypt. Egyptian attitudes to Darius are markedly more favourable than to his predecessor Cambyses or his successor Xerxes.
404 BC – 399 BC Amyrtaeus -- the sole Twenty-eighth Dynasty pharaoh Amyrtaeus of Sais (404-399 BC) is the sole pharaoh of the Twenty-eighth Dynasty and the last native pharaoh to rule for any significant length of time before the Thirtieth Dynasty. He leads the successful revolt against Persian rule following Darius II's death and the ensuing Persian succession crisis, establishing control of Egypt and ruling for 5 years. Remarkably little is known about him -- he appears in no temples (he apparently builds none or none survive), his mummy has never been identified, and his reign is documented primarily in demotic papyri and one fragmentary stele. He is related to Psamtik III and Inaros (the Egyptian rebel leader who resisted Persian reconquest in the 450s BC). His successor Nepherites I (399 BC) founds the Twenty-ninth Dynasty, displacing Amyrtaeus without record of warfare.
380 BC – 362 BC Nectanebo I -- the last Egyptian renaissance Nectanebo I (380-362 BC), founder of the Thirtieth Dynasty, is the last vigorous native Egyptian pharaoh -- the ruler who successfully defends Egypt against a joint Persian-Greek invasion (373 BC), builds extensively throughout Egypt, and begins a minor cultural renaissance. His victory over the Persian-Greek force of 220,000 men with a much smaller Egyptian army (assisted by the Nile flood, which delays the enemy long enough for the seasonal rains to make military operations impossible) is one of the most remarkable military successes of the Late Period. His building programme: a temple at Kharga, additions at Karnak, Philae, Bubastis and Sebennytos. His successor Nectanebo II (360-343 BC) continues the building programme and maintains Egyptian independence until the Second Persian conquest (343 BC).
360 BC – 343 BC Nectanebo II -- the last native pharaoh Nectanebo II (360-343 BC) is the last native Egyptian pharaoh -- a ruler of considerable achievement (he is the most prolific temple builder in Egypt between Ramesses III and the Ptolemies) who is ultimately unable to resist Artaxerxes III's Second Persian conquest. He builds or adds to temples throughout Egypt (including the outermost pylon at Karnak, the Nectanebo court at Luxor, and temples at Philae, Karnak, Dendera and dozens of other sites). His military failures -- two Macedonian generals (Agesilaus of Sparta and Chabrias of Athens) fail to decisively defeat the Persian threat -- reflect the exhaustion of Egyptian resources after 60 years of independence. When Artaxerxes III invades in 343 BC with an overwhelming force, Nectanebo II flees to Nubia and is never heard from again. Legend (preserved in the Alexander Romance) makes him the father of Alexander the Great.
343 BC – 332 BC Second Persian conquest -- the brutal occupation The Second Persian conquest (343 BC) under Artaxerxes III is remembered in Egyptian sources as significantly more destructive than the first -- Artaxerxes III is accused of killing the Apis bull (unlike Cambyses, who revered it) and general impiety. Persian rulers Artaxerxes III, Artaxerxes IV (Arses) and Darius III rule Egypt as the Thirty-first Dynasty (343-332 BC) through satraps rather than personally. The brief period of Persian rule (only 11 years) is marked by Egyptian resentment and attempts at revolt that are firmly suppressed. When Alexander the Great arrives in 332 BC, Mazaces (the Persian satrap) surrenders without a fight -- Egyptians apparently prefer Macedonian to Persian rule. The Second Persian period ends the long tradition of native Egyptian pharaohs (the Thirtieth Dynasty is the last) and marks the beginning of foreign rulership that continues until modern independence.
332 BC Alexander enters Egypt -- the last conquest When Alexander the Great enters Egypt in October 332 BC after his victory over Darius III at the Battle of Issus, the Persian satrap Mazaces surrenders without a fight. The Egyptians welcome Alexander as a liberator. He visits Memphis and offers sacrifices to the Apis bull, visits the oracle of Amun at Siwa (where the oracle addresses him as the son of Amun), founds Alexandria at the mouth of the western Delta (January 331 BC) and then leaves Egypt -- never to return. His 6-month stay transforms Egypt: Alexandria becomes the capital of the Ptolemaic kingdom and the greatest city of the ancient world; the oracle's declaration of his divine sonship becomes the cornerstone of the Hellenistic ruler cult; and Egypt becomes the richest province of the Macedonian empire. Three thousand years of native pharaonic rule end with Alexander's arrival -- though the form of pharaonic culture continues under the Ptolemies.
