Egypt: The Old Kingdom Timeline

Egypt: The Old Kingdom 50

2686 BC – 2181 BC Abusir -- the Fifth Dynasty necropolis Abusir, located between Giza and Saqqara, is the principal necropolis of the Fifth Dynasty -- containing the pyramid complexes of Sahure, Neferirkare, Neferefre and Niuserre, together with several sun temples. The pyramids are smaller than the Fourth Dynasty examples (Sahure's is only 47 metres high compared to Khufu's 146.5 metres) but their associated temples contain some of the finest relief sculpture of the Old Kingdom. The Abusir Papyri, discovered in the late 19th century, are the oldest administrative papyri in existence -- temple accounts recording the daily roster of priests, inventories of temple equipment and delivery records for food offerings. They provide an extraordinary window into the administration of a royal funerary cult in the 25th century BC.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Canopic jars -- protecting the organs Canopic jars (the name derives from a Greek confusion with the city of Canopus) are the four containers used to store the embalmed organs of the mummified deceased -- the liver, lungs, stomach and intestines (the brain was discarded as unimportant; the heart was left in the body). The jars are placed under the protection of four protective deities (the Four Sons of Horus -- Imsety, Hapy, Duamutef and Qebehsenuef) and guarded by four goddesses (Isis, Nephthys, Neith and Selket). Early canopic jars have plain lids; from the First Intermediate Period the lids are shaped as human heads; from the New Kingdom the lids represent the heads of the Four Sons of Horus (human, baboon, jackal and falcon). After the Third Intermediate Period, organs are re-wrapped and returned to the mummy's body, but symbolic canopic jars are still provided.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Dahshur -- Sneferu's pyramid field Dahshur, 40km south of Cairo, contains two of the most important pyramids in Egypt -- Sneferu's Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid. The Bent Pyramid (c.2600 BC) is unique in Egyptian architecture for its change of slope -- from 54° to 43° -- partway up, creating its distinctive kinked profile. The change is now understood to reflect a structural crisis during construction: cracks appeared in the interior chambers, requiring the angle to be reduced to decrease the weight of stone above. The Red Pyramid, built immediately after, incorporates the lesson learned: it maintains a consistent 43° angle throughout and is the world's first successful true pyramid. Dahshur also contains the Black Pyramid of Amenemhat III (Middle Kingdom) and the White Pyramid of Amenemhat II.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Djedefre -- the heretic of the Fourth Dynasty Djedefre (c.2566-2558 BC), son of Khufu and his immediate successor, is one of the most mysterious pharaohs of the Old Kingdom. He builds his pyramid at Abu Rawash -- 8km north of Giza, the northernmost royal pyramid in Egypt -- rather than continuing his father's Giza necropolis. Why he chose a different site is unknown: theories range from a deliberate break with his father's religious programme to a dispute with his brother Khafre (who succeeds him). Djedefre is the first pharaoh to call himself "Son of Ra" -- a title that becomes standard for all subsequent pharaohs. His pyramid is now almost entirely destroyed -- the stone having been quarried in Roman and medieval times -- but fragments of his portrait sculpture (found at Abu Rawash in the 1990s) show remarkable quality.
2686 BC – 2649 BC Djoser and the Step Pyramid -- stone begins Pharaoh Djoser (c.2668-2649 BC) and his architect Imhotep create the world's first large-scale stone monument -- the Step Pyramid complex at Saqqara. Beginning as a standard mastaba, the structure is enlarged six times over approximately 19 years into a six-stepped pyramid 62 metres high and 125 metres wide, enclosing an underground labyrinth of corridors, shafts and chambers totalling 5.7km. The surrounding complex of 15 hectares includes dummy buildings (with sealed doors and no interiors, apparently for the king's use in the afterlife), a Heb-Sed court for the royal jubilee ritual, a mortuary temple, a south tomb and an enclosure wall with 14 false gates and one real entrance. The complex employs over 500,000 tonnes of limestone -- all quarried, transported and fitted by human labour without wheeled vehicles or iron tools.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Egypt: The Old Kingdom (2686–2181 BC) The Old Kingdom (2686-2181 BC) is the Pyramid Age -- the 505 years in which ancient Egypt builds the most ambitious stone monuments in human history, reaches the apex of royal power and absolute theocratic control, and creates the administrative and artistic template that all subsequent Egyptian periods follow. The Third Dynasty (2686-2613 BC) under Djoser and Imhotep invents monumental stone construction with the Step Pyramid at Saqqara. The Fourth Dynasty (2613-2494 BC) under Sneferu, Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure builds the pyramids at Dahshur and Giza -- moving more stone than any other pharaohs in history. The Fifth and Sixth Dynasties (2494-2181 BC) see the inscription of the Pyramid Texts (the oldest religious literature in the world), the growth of provincial power, and eventually the collapse of the centralised state into the First Intermediate Period.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Egyptian astronomy -- reading the sky Old Kingdom Egyptians develop practical astronomy in service of religion, agriculture and the calendar. The alignment of the pyramids to true north (within 0.05 degrees in the case of the Great Pyramid) requires astronomical observation -- possibly using a sighting instrument (merkhet) to observe the circumpolar stars. The rising of Sirius (the star Sopdet/Sothis) at dawn, after 70 days of invisibility, marks the beginning of the New Year and approximately coincides with the onset of the Nile flood -- a critically important astronomical observation. The decanal system -- 36 star groups that rise successively at 10-day intervals -- provides the framework for the later 24-hour day. The "diagonal calendars" (star clocks) inscribed on Middle Kingdom coffins are the earliest systematic astronomical records.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Egyptian dentistry -- the earliest dental records Ancient Egypt has the earliest recorded evidence of dental disease and dental treatment in the world. The skeleton of a young man from Giza (c.2500 BC) shows signs of dental drilling -- two molars with small holes in them that may represent an early attempt to relieve dental abscesses, though this interpretation is contested. The Ebers Papyrus (c.1550 BC) contains remedies for dental pain and loose teeth. Egyptian dental disease is severe -- caused primarily by the sand and grit that contaminated Egyptian bread (milled with stone grinders), which ground down the teeth to the pulp. Many Egyptian mummies show extreme dental attrition, abscesses and periostitis. The mummy of Ramesses II shows severe dental disease consistent with his age -- a man who lived to approximately 90 would have had little left of his teeth.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Egyptian jewellery -- gold, lapis and carnelian Old Kingdom jewellery is among the most technically accomplished in the ancient world -- combining gold, electrum (gold-silver alloy), faience (glazed ceramic), carnelian, turquoise, lapis lazuli and amethyst in sophisticated polychrome designs. The jewellery cache found in the tomb of Queen Hetepheres I (mother of Khufu) at Giza includes a remarkable set of silver bracelets inlaid with lapis lazuli, carnelian and turquoise butterflies -- some of the finest examples of cloisonné work in the ancient world. Egyptian goldsmiths develop techniques of granulation (applying tiny gold beads), wire-drawing, and champlevé (cutting recesses in metal and filling them with coloured glass or stone) that are not surpassed until the Renaissance. The colours are not arbitrary: gold represents the flesh of the gods, lapis lazuli their hair, and turquoise regeneration and new life.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Egyptian mathematics -- the practical science Old Kingdom Egypt develops a practical mathematics of considerable sophistication -- not the abstract, theorem-based mathematics of later Greek thought, but a functional computational system capable of designing and building the pyramids with extraordinary precision. The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus (c.1650 BC, copying a Middle Kingdom original) reveals the methods: arithmetic by successive doubling, fractions expressed as sums of unit fractions, area calculations for triangles and circles, volume calculations for cylinders. The Egyptians calculate pi (the ratio of circumference to diameter) as approximately 3.16 -- accurate to 0.6%. They calculate the volume of a truncated pyramid (relevant for construction planning) using a formula equivalent to the modern V = h(a² + ab + b²)/3. Without these mathematical tools, the design and logistics of the Great Pyramid would be impossible.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Giza's sacred landscape -- alignments and symbolism The Giza plateau is organised not merely as a practical necropolis but as a sacred landscape whose spatial relationships encode cosmological meaning. The three main pyramids are not randomly placed but arranged to mirror the positions of the three stars of Orion's belt (Zahi Hawass and Robert Bauval's "Orion correlation theory" -- contested but influential). The north-south alignment of the pyramids precisely follows a diagonal that corresponds to no random placement. The causeways of Khufu and Khafre align with the rising sun on the equinoxes. The Great Sphinx faces due east -- toward the rising sun. The valley temples are positioned at the edge of the then-existing cultivation -- the boundary between the Black Land (life) and the desert (death). Every element of the complex reflects the Egyptians' meticulous attention to astronomical and symbolic orientation.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Hathor -- the golden goddess of love and music Hathor (Egyptian: Hwt-Hr, "House of Horus") is one of the most important and beloved goddesses of the Egyptian pantheon -- the goddess of love, beauty, music, dance, fertility, motherhood and joy. She is depicted as a cow (or a woman with cow's ears and horns), and is closely identified with the sky, the west (where the sun sets and the dead go), and with foreign lands that produce luxury goods. She is the patron of miners (Serabit el-Khadim in Sinai is her main cult site) and of women. The Dendera Temple in Upper Egypt, largely built in the Ptolemaic period, is her principal sanctuary -- one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. As "Mistress of the West," she welcomes the dead at the entrance to the underworld, offering them water from a sycamore tree. Hathor's popularity spans all periods of Egyptian history.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Huni -- the last Third Dynasty pharaoh Huni (c.2637-2613 BC), the last pharaoh of the Third Dynasty and predecessor of Sneferu, is one of the least-known Old Kingdom rulers. He is credited in later sources with building small step pyramids at provincial sites throughout Egypt -- at Elephantine, Edfu, Hierakonpolis, Abydos, Sinki and other locations. If correctly attributed, these small pyramids (none more than 15 metres high) may represent a programme of royal presence throughout the country -- symbolic markers of royal authority in the nomes rather than actual funerary monuments. Huni may also have begun the pyramid at Meidum that Sneferu completed and converted to a true pyramid. The transition from Huni to Sneferu may involve a marriage alliance rather than a direct dynastic succession.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Khafkhufu and Bauefre -- the lesser sons of Khufu Ancient sources list numerous sons of Khufu -- the Westcar Papyrus alone mentions Khafkhufu (possibly Khafre), Bauefre and Hordjedef (Djedefhor) as sons present at their father's court. Prince Hordjedef (Djedefhor) is one of the most revered sages of ancient Egypt -- attributed in later periods with profound wisdom texts and with the discovery of hidden magical papyri. The "Instructions of Hardjedef," one of the earliest wisdom texts in any language (partially surviving), advocates prudence, self-control and proper preparation for death. That several of Khufu's sons are remembered for centuries after his reign as wise men rather than kings suggests a court culture of considerable intellectual sophistication surrounding the man who built the most technically ambitious building in history.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Mastabas of the nobles -- private tombs Surrounding the royal pyramids at Giza, Saqqara and Abusir are hundreds of mastaba tombs belonging to the nobles, officials and relatives of the pharaoh. These private tombs contain some of the finest art of the Old Kingdom -- beautifully carved and painted relief scenes showing daily life, hunting, fishing, agriculture, crafts, music and feasting that provide an incomparable picture of Egyptian society in the 3rd millennium BC. The mastaba of Ti at Saqqara (Fifth Dynasty) shows scenes of hippopotamus hunting in the marshes, carpentry workshops and a famous scene of wild animals in the desert. The mastaba of Mereruka (Sixth Dynasty) is the largest private tomb in Egypt -- 32 chambers of painted reliefs. The private tombs collectively constitute a more complete picture of Egyptian life than the royal monuments.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Meidum -- the failed pyramid The Meidum pyramid (c.2610-2590 BC), begun as a seven-step pyramid (possibly by Huni) and completed as a true pyramid by Sneferu, partially collapsed at an unknown date -- leaving the inner core standing as a striking three-stepped tower surrounded by a mountain of debris. The collapse (probably during or after Sneferu's reign) is the most dramatic structural failure in pyramid history and a direct lesson that shapes the design of all subsequent pyramids. The Meidum pyramid's failure is caused by the conversion of a step pyramid to a true pyramid by filling in the steps with low-quality packing blocks and adding an outer casing -- a structural approach that creates a fundamental weakness. The debris field around the collapsed outer casing is still visible today.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Merytites and Hetepheres -- Old Kingdom queens Old Kingdom queens played important religious and political roles, though they are often overshadowed by their royal husbands. Queen Hetepheres I, mother of Khufu, is buried near the Great Pyramid in a shaft tomb whose discovery in 1925 yielded a remarkable cache of gilded furniture -- a canopy, chair, carrying chair and bed -- that are among the finest examples of Old Kingdom craftsmanship. Merytites, Khufu's chief wife, receives a small pyramid of her own at Giza. Queen Khentkaus I (c.2510 BC) has one of the largest tomb complexes at Giza -- a two-stepped mastaba that has led some scholars to identify her as a pharaoh in her own right. Old Kingdom queens bear the title "Mother of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt," ensuring their importance even in a patrilineal succession.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Obelisks -- needles of stone pointing to the sun The obelisk (Egyptian: tekhen) is one of the most distinctive forms of Egyptian monumental architecture -- a tall, tapering four-sided stone pillar with a pyramidal top (pyramidion) originally sheathed in electrum (gold-silver alloy) to catch the first rays of the rising sun. Obelisks are sacred to Ra-Atum and represent the primordial benben stone (the original sunrise). The Fifth Dynasty sun temples at Abu Ghurab contain the earliest obelisk-like structures -- squat, massive benben stones on high bases. The first true slender obelisks appear in the Middle Kingdom; the tallest examples are New Kingdom -- Thutmose III's obelisk, now in Rome's Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, is 32 metres high and weighs 230 tonnes. The Romans remove 42 obelisks from Egypt; 13 now stand in Rome -- more than in all of Egypt.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Old Kingdom expeditions to Nubia and Punt The Old Kingdom pharaohs send expeditions to Nubia for gold, ivory, ebony and exotic animals, and to the mysterious land of Punt (probably modern Eritrea or Somalia) for incense, myrrh and frankincense. The autobiography of Harkhuf (a Sixth Dynasty official) records four expeditions to Nubia on behalf of pharaohs Merenre and Pepi II. His most celebrated journey brings back a "dancing dwarf" from the land of Yam (central Africa), prompting the excited letter from Pepi II promising greater honours than those who brought the treasures of Punt. The expeditions require sophisticated logistical planning -- hundreds of men crossing 1,000km of desert and river with food, water and trade goods, returning with heavy loads of exotic materials.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Old Kingdom legacy -- the foundations of civilisation The Old Kingdom's legacy is the physical and cultural foundation of the entire subsequent history of ancient Egypt and, through Egypt's enormous influence on the ancient world, of Western civilisation itself. The Great Pyramid -- still the most precisely built large stone structure on earth -- demonstrates the level of mathematical, astronomical, logistical and managerial skill achieved by the Old Kingdom Egyptians. The Pyramid Texts are the source of all subsequent Egyptian religious literature. The artistic conventions of the Old Kingdom define Egyptian art for 2,000 years. The administrative system (nomes, vizier, cattle count) underpins Egyptian governance for 3,000 years. When Greek philosophers such as Thales, Pythagoras and Plato visit Egypt and claim to learn from its ancient wisdom, it is ultimately the Old Kingdom tradition -- filtered through successive periods -- that they encounter.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Old Kingdom provincial tombs -- decentralisation By the Fifth and Sixth Dynasties, the wealthy provincial governors (nomarchs) of the larger nomes commission tomb complexes in their home provinces rather than near the royal pyramid at Memphis. These provincial tombs -- particularly in Middle Egypt (Beni Hasan, Meir, Deir el-Bersha, Qubbet el-Hawa at Aswan) -- contain relief paintings and texts that document provincial life, trade expeditions, military campaigns and personal biographies. The Autobiography of Harkhuf at Aswan records four expeditions to Nubia. The Autobiography of Pepyankh the Black records military campaigns in Asia. The provincial tombs are not merely personal monuments but records of the expansion of elite privilege beyond the royal court -- the dispersal of wealth and power that contributes to the Old Kingdom's eventual collapse.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Ptah and Memphis theology -- creation through speech The Memphite Theology, preserved in the Shabaka Stone (a Late Period copy of a much older text), describes the creation of the world by the god Ptah through the power of his heart (thought) and his tongue (speech) -- a creation theology so philosophically sophisticated that it has been compared to the opening of the Gospel of John ("In the beginning was the Word"). Ptah creates the other gods by thinking them and naming them; all things come into existence through his creative speech. As the patron deity of Memphis and of all craftsmen and architects, Ptah represents the creative intelligence that underlies both the universe and human art. His high priest bears the title "Greatest of the Directors of Craftsmen" (Wer-kherep-hemut) -- reflecting the identification of creative intelligence with the practical arts.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Sekhemkhet -- the unfinished pyramid Sekhemkhet (c.2648-2640 BC), Djoser's successor and the second Third Dynasty pharaoh, begins a step pyramid at Saqqara immediately south of Djoser's complex -- but it is abandoned after only the first step is completed, suggesting either a short reign or a political disruption. The subterranean chambers of Sekhemkhet's pyramid were found intact in 1951, containing an alabaster sarcophagus with a sliding panel door (a unique design) sealed with a funerary wreath still in place. The sarcophagus was empty -- probably because the burial was never completed when the building project was abandoned. The mystery of Sekhemkhet's pyramid -- why was construction stopped? Why was the sarcophagus placed but never used? -- remains unsolved.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Seshat -- goddess of writing and measurement Seshat (literally "female scribe") is the goddess of writing, measurement, architecture, mathematics and record-keeping -- the divine counterpart to Thoth (the male god of writing and wisdom). She is depicted wearing a leopard skin over a feathered dress, with a seven-pointed star or flower on her head. She assists the pharaoh in the "stretching the cord" ceremony (the astronomical alignment ritual for founding new temples and buildings), recording his regnal years on a palm rib notched for each year, and keeping the records of the gods. She is the patron of architects, surveyors, scribes and librarians -- and the divine guarantor of the precision that makes Egyptian architecture possible. The fact that the Egyptians deify the act of precise measurement reflects the centrality of scribal and architectural skill to their civilisation.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Abu Rawash pyramid -- northernmost and least known The pyramid of Djedefre at Abu Rawash (c.2566-2558 BC) is the northernmost royal pyramid in Egypt -- located 8km north of Giza on a prominent hill with views extending to Alexandria and the Mediterranean in good conditions. It is also the most thoroughly destroyed: the Romans quarried it extensively for building material, leaving only the lower courses of the superstructure and the underground chambers. 19th-century excavators found fragments of extraordinary royal sculpture -- including the world's finest known royal face from the Old Kingdom (now in the Louvre) and fragments of a life-size seated statue showing Djedefre wearing the nemes headcloth and uraeus. The quality of the sculpture from this destroyed pyramid is so high that Egyptologists now rank Djedefre as a significant patron of the arts, not merely a transitional figure.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Autobiography of Harkhuf -- journeys to the south Harkhuf (c.2280-2220 BC), a Sixth Dynasty nomarch and explorer, conducts four expeditions to the mysterious land of Yam (probably in the Sudan, possibly as far as the Central African Great Lakes region) and records them in his autobiographical tomb inscription at Qubbet el-Hawa, Aswan. His expeditions bring back: "incense, ebony, oil, leopard skins, throwsticks, and many good gifts" (first expedition); 300 donkeys of incense, ebony, oil, leopard skins and throw-sticks (second expedition); and, most famously, a living pygmy (nen) who dances to please the god (third expedition). The young Pepi II's letter promising great rewards for the dancing dwarf is one of the most charming documents from the Old Kingdom -- and one of the earliest pieces of personal royal correspondence in history.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Autobiography of Weni the Elder The Autobiography of Weni the Elder, inscribed on a limestone slab from his tomb at Abydos (now in the Cairo Museum), is one of the earliest pieces of historical prose in any language -- a first-person narrative of a career spanning three reigns of the Sixth Dynasty (Teti, Pepi I and Merenre). Weni describes his rise from minor official to commander-in-chief, including five military campaigns against the "Sand-dwellers" (Asiatic nomads in the Sinai and southern Canaan), a canal-cutting expedition at the First Cataract of the Nile, and quarrying expeditions to Hatnub for alabaster. The text is remarkable for its personal voice -- Weni's pride in his achievements, his loyalty to the pharaoh and his awareness that he is recording history -- and for the picture it provides of Old Kingdom foreign policy and administration.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Contendings of Horus and Seth -- myth and politics The myth of Horus and Seth -- the battle for the inheritance of Osiris's throne between Osiris's son Horus and his brother Seth -- is one of the most important narratives in Egyptian religion, first fully attested in the Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts. Osiris (the primordial king) is murdered by his brother Seth (chaos), his body dismembered and scattered. His wife Isis reassembles the body, conceives Horus magically, and raises Horus in hiding. Horus eventually defeats Seth in a series of contests judged by the gods, and is confirmed as the rightful king of Egypt. The myth encodes the political ideology of Egyptian kingship: the pharaoh is the living Horus; after death he becomes the dead Osiris; his successor becomes the new Horus. The cyclical nature of the myth -- death, resurrection, renewed kingship -- is the template for Egyptian religious thought.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Heb-Sed festival -- royal renewal The Heb-Sed (sed festival) is the most important ritual in the Egyptian royal calendar -- a ceremony of royal renewal and rejuvenation performed after 30 years of reign and then every 3 years thereafter. The pharaoh ritually dies and is reborn, demonstrates his continued physical fitness by running a course around the Heb-Sed courtyard (which symbolises Egypt's territory), receives the crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt, and is confirmed in his divine kingship by the gods. Djoser's Step Pyramid complex includes the world's earliest surviving Heb-Sed court -- a dummy complex built for the king's perpetual ritual celebration in the afterlife. The Heb-Sed is attested from the First Dynasty (a First Dynasty label shows a figure running the Heb-Sed course) and performed continuously until the Ptolemaic period.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Maxims of Ptahhotep -- wisdom literature The Maxims of Ptahhotep, attributed to a vizier of Pharaoh Djedkare (Fifth Dynasty, c.2414-2375 BC), is one of the oldest works of wisdom literature in the world -- a collection of 37 maxims for proper conduct in public and private life. Its themes are universal: listen before speaking; treat subordinates with justice; don't be arrogant; respect women; be moderate in all things; the truly wise man is humble. The opening lamentation on old age ("How hard and painful are the last days of an aged man! He grows weaker every day; his eyes become dim, his ears deaf; his strength fades; his heart knows peace no longer") is one of the most powerful passages in ancient literature. The Maxims are copied by Egyptian schoolboys for 2,000 years after their composition.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Old Kingdom collapse -- climate, taxes and nomarchs The collapse of the Old Kingdom (c.2181 BC) is one of the most studied events in ancient history -- a cautionary tale about the fragility of complex centralised states. The causes are multiple and interconnected: the "4.2 kiloyear event" (a multi-decadal drought c.2200-2150 BC that reduces Nile flood levels and causes famine) is the environmental trigger; the structural weaknesses -- accumulated tax exemptions for temples and noble estates, hereditary nomarchies, an unsustainable pyramid-building programme that consumes state resources -- provide the context; and the extremely long reign of Pepi II (94 years) removes the central authority needed to manage the crisis. The result is 126 years of fragmentation (the First Intermediate Period) before the Theban Eleventh Dynasty reunifies Egypt c.2055 BC.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Opening of the Mouth ceremony -- animation of the dead The "Opening of the Mouth" (Wepet-Ra) is the most important funerary ritual in ancient Egypt -- a ceremony performed on the mummy and on statues of the deceased to restore their senses and enable them to eat, drink and interact with the world of the living. The ceremony involves touching the mouth (and sometimes the eyes, ears and nose) of the statue or mummy with a variety of ritual implements -- an adze, a chisel, a finger, animal legs -- while the priest recites the appropriate spells. The ritual is derived from the workshop practice of "animating" newly made statues by touching their mouths with an adze. It is attested from the Old Kingdom and performed continuously until the end of the pharaonic period. A version of the Opening of the Mouth is still performed in some Orthodox Jewish and Coptic Christian funeral traditions.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Weighing of the Heart -- judgment after death The most dramatic element of Egyptian afterlife theology -- developed fully in the New Kingdom Book of the Dead but rooted in Old Kingdom concepts -- is the "Weighing of the Heart" ceremony. After death, the deceased is led by Anubis to the Hall of Two Truths, where the heart (the seat of intelligence and conscience) is weighed on scales against the feather of Ma'at (truth and cosmic order). The 42 assessor gods witness the deceased's negative confession ("I have not stolen, I have not murdered, I have not cheated..."). If the heart is lighter than the feather -- if the person lived in accordance with Ma'at -- they are admitted to the afterlife. If the heart is heavier, it is eaten by Ammit (a hybrid lion-crocodile-hippopotamus monster) and the person is destroyed forever. This concept of moral judgment after death is one of Egypt's most influential contributions to world religion.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The Westcar Papyrus -- stories at Khufu's court The Westcar Papyrus (c.1600 BC, preserving stories probably composed in the Middle Kingdom) is a collection of magical tales set at the court of the Old Kingdom pharaohs -- one of the earliest examples of Egyptian narrative fiction. The surviving stories include: a tale of Sneferu being rowed on a lake by beautiful women wearing net dresses; a story of a magician who folds back the water to retrieve a jewel; and most remarkably, a prophecy delivered by the magician Djedi to Khufu, telling him that his dynasty will eventually be succeeded by the children of the high priest of Ra -- children miraculously born to the wife of the priest, with the gods Isis, Nephthys, Meskhenet and Khnum attending as midwives. The Westcar Papyrus is the oldest surviving short story collection in the world.
2686 BC – 2181 BC The pyramid workforce -- not slaves The popular image of pyramids built by slaves is a myth perpetuated by Herodotus and the Book of Exodus -- contradicted by the archaeological evidence. The workers' village discovered at Giza (1990) by Zahi Hawass reveals a well-organised permanent community of approximately 20,000-30,000 workers. They receive: daily rations of bread, beer, fish and meat (the animal bones show consumption of prime beef, not scraps); medical care (skeletal evidence of successful amputations and fracture-setting); a proper burial in the workers' cemetery near the pyramids (reserved for those who died in royal service). Graffiti in the quarries identify work gangs by name: "Friends of Khufu," "Drunkards of Menkaure." The workers are Egyptian conscripts serving a rotating labour tax (corvée) -- proud of their service, not unwilling victims.
2686 BC – 2181 BC Wadi Hammamat -- the highway through the desert The Wadi Hammamat, a dry river valley cutting through the Eastern Desert from the Nile at Qift (ancient Koptos) to the Red Sea, is one of ancient Egypt's most important routes -- used for quarrying expeditions (the wadi contains excellent greywacke/schist stone used for statues, palettes and building material), trading caravans to the Red Sea, and military expeditions to the Eastern Desert and beyond. The wadi's rock walls are covered with thousands of inscriptions spanning from the Predynastic period to the Arab conquest -- a 5,000-year record of Egyptian activity. Old Kingdom inscriptions record quarrying expeditions under Fourth and Fifth Dynasty pharaohs. The wadi is also notable for containing graffiti that may depict the earliest known sailing boats and the earliest representation of pharaonic power outside the Nile valley.
2650 BC – 2600 BC Imhotep -- the world's first architect and physician Imhotep (c.2650-2600 BC) is the first architect, engineer, physician and polymath known by name in human history. He serves as vizier, chief physician and chief architect to Pharaoh Djoser, designing the Step Pyramid complex -- the most technologically innovative building project of the ancient world. Two thousand years after his death he is deified as a god of medicine; the Greeks identify him with Asclepius and worship him at the temple of Philae. He is one of only two non-royal individuals (the other is Amenhotep son of Hapu) to be deified in ancient Egypt. His medical writings, if they existed, are lost -- but the later medical papyri that claim to reproduce his teachings suggest he developed diagnostic and therapeutic methods that were genuinely revolutionary.
2613 BC – 2589 BC Sneferu -- the experimental pyramid builder Sneferu (c.2613-2589 BC), first pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty, builds three pyramids and in the process invents the true pyramid form. His first attempt at Meidum begins as a step pyramid and is converted to a true pyramid but collapses at an unknown date (possibly during his reign). His Bent Pyramid at Dahshur (c.2600 BC) changes its angle from 54° to 43° approximately halfway up -- apparently because the steeper lower slope proved unstable. His Red Pyramid (also at Dahshur) is the world's first successful true pyramid and the first internal chamber reached directly by a descending passage. Sneferu moves more stone than any other pharaoh -- approximately 3.7 million tonnes -- in the process of learning how to build a true pyramid.
2600 BC – 2500 BC Old Kingdom art -- the classical style established Old Kingdom art establishes the canonical forms of Egyptian sculpture and painting that persist for 2,000 years. The reserve head (a limestone portrait head, separate from the body, placed in the tomb) reaches its peak in the Fourth Dynasty -- 30 known examples, remarkably individualistic, apparently genuine portraits. The seated scribe figures (Fifth Dynasty) -- cross-legged, alert, papyrus unrolled -- are among the most psychologically immediate sculptures of the ancient world. Tomb reliefs of the Fifth and Sixth Dynasties show agricultural scenes, hunting, fishing, feasting, music and crafts in extraordinary detail -- a comprehensive picture of daily life in the 25th century BC. The conventions of Egyptian art (hierarchical scale, composite view, register system) are so perfectly established in the Old Kingdom that subsequent periods can only refine, never fundamentally revise them.
2589 BC – 2566 BC Khufu -- builder of the Great Pyramid Khufu (Greek: Cheops, c.2589-2566 BC) is the pharaoh who builds the Great Pyramid of Giza -- the largest stone building in the world and the oldest surviving Wonder of the ancient world. Despite the scale of his achievement, very little is known about Khufu personally: his only surviving portrait is a 7.5cm ivory figurine (the smallest representation of the most powerful man who ever lived). Ancient sources (Herodotus, writing 2,000 years after Khufu) describe him as a cruel tyrant who prostituted his own daughter to fund the pyramid -- almost certainly false propaganda. The Westcar Papyrus (Middle Kingdom) depicts him as a curious, somewhat harsh but interested ruler who is told by a magician that his dynasty will eventually be succeeded by priests of Ra.
2580 BC – 2560 BC The Giza necropolis -- a city of the dead The Giza plateau is not merely three pyramids but a complete funerary city -- one of the most densely occupied archaeological landscapes in the world. Around the three royal pyramids are: three queens' pyramids (each of the main pharaohs has one to three); the Great Sphinx and its associated temples; hundreds of mastaba tombs for nobles and officials arranged in streets and rows; the workers' village (discovered by Zahi Hawass in 1990) with bakeries, breweries and medical facilities; quarries; administrative buildings; and harbours on the edge of the then-existing floodplain. The entire complex is connected by causeways to valley temples at the flood's edge. It is not a building but a planned city, organised with the precision of the administrative state that makes it possible.
2580 BC – 2560 BC The Great Pyramid -- how it was built The Great Pyramid of Giza (c.2580-2560 BC) contains approximately 2.3 million limestone blocks averaging 2.5 tonnes, plus 8,000 tonnes of Aswan granite for the internal chambers. The Merer Papyrus (discovered 2013) -- a logbook of a work gang leader -- provides the first contemporary evidence of the construction process: limestone blocks quarried at Tura on the east bank, loaded onto barges, transported by canal to the Giza plateau and dragged up ramps. The workforce is estimated at 20,000-30,000 workers (not slaves, as once believed -- the graffiti in the quarries describe work gangs named "Friends of Khufu" and "Drunkards of Menkaure"). The workers are housed in a purpose-built workers' village with bakeries, breweries and a medical facility.
2558 BC – 2532 BC Khafre and the Great Sphinx Pharaoh Khafre (c.2558-2532 BC) builds the second pyramid at Giza (136.4 metres high -- slightly shorter than Khufu's but built on higher ground, appearing taller) and is credited with creating the Great Sphinx. The Sphinx (73 metres long, 20 metres high) is carved from a single outcrop of limestone bedrock left after quarrying -- its body is the sphinx's, its face almost certainly Khafre's. The valley temple of Khafre's pyramid complex is the best-preserved Old Kingdom temple in Egypt, its granite walls still standing to their original height. It contains 23 seated statues of Khafre in diorite -- the finest royal sculpture of the Old Kingdom -- one of which shows a falcon (Horus) embracing the back of the pharaoh's head with its wings.
2532 BC – 2503 BC Menkaure -- the last Giza pyramid Menkaure (c.2532-2503 BC) builds the third and smallest of the Giza pyramids (65.5 metres high, compared to 146.5 for Khufu and 136.4 for Khafre) -- but what it lacks in size it compensates in sculptural quality. The Menkaure triads -- groups of three figures showing the pharaoh flanked by the goddess Hathor and a nome deity -- are among the finest sculpture of the Old Kingdom. A legend recorded by Herodotus describes Menkaure as the most just and pious of the pyramid builders, contrasting him with the tyrannical Khufu and Khafre. His pyramid is unfinished at his death -- the outer granite casing is incomplete and the interior chambers were hastily completed in mud brick. His granite sarcophagus, recovered from the pyramid, sank with the ship carrying it to the British Museum in 1838.
2500 BC – 2181 BC Old Kingdom trade with Byblos -- cedar from Lebanon The ancient Lebanese city of Byblos (modern Jubayl) is Egypt's most important trading partner for wood -- Egypt being almost entirely treeless, dependent on imported cedar and pine for large wooden objects (boat planks, coffins, temple doors, furniture). The relationship between Egypt and Byblos is attested from the Early Dynastic period and reaches its peak in the Old Kingdom: Egyptian objects found at Byblos, Byblian objects found in Egyptian royal tombs. The Egyptians call Byblos "Kepen" and consider it within their cultural sphere. The closeness of the relationship is reflected in the legend of Osiris -- according to one version, his coffin floats to Byblos and becomes enclosed in a tamarisk tree that is cut down and used as a pillar in the palace of the king of Byblos; Isis travels to Byblos to recover her husband's body.
2494 BC – 2345 BC The Fifth Dynasty -- solar religion ascendant The Fifth Dynasty (c.2494-2345 BC) sees a significant shift in royal ideology: the pharaoh's divine status is diminished (pyramids become smaller) while the solar cult of Ra at Heliopolis ascends. The pharaoh is now called "Son of Ra" -- a relationship rather than an identity. Five of the nine Fifth Dynasty pharaohs build sun temples in addition to their pyramid complexes -- open-air sanctuaries with a large squat obelisk (benben) representing the primordial mound of creation and the first rays of the sun. The Fifth Dynasty also sees the first Pyramid Texts -- religious spells inscribed inside the pyramid chambers for the first time, in the pyramid of Unas (c.2375-2345 BC). These 228 spells are the oldest religious literature in the world.
2375 BC – 2345 BC The Pyramid Texts -- the oldest religious literature The Pyramid Texts, first inscribed in the burial chamber of Unas (last pharaoh of the Fifth Dynasty, c.2375-2345 BC) at Saqqara, are the oldest religious literature in the world -- 228 spells covering the walls of the chamber in columns of hieroglyphs highlighted in turquoise. The texts are a collection of funerary spells, hymns, incantations and ritual instructions designed to help the dead king navigate the afterlife, join the sun god Ra in his celestial boat, and achieve resurrection. They describe the geography of the underworld, the threats the king will face, and the passwords and spells needed to overcome them. The Pyramid Texts are the precursor of the Coffin Texts (Middle Kingdom) and the Book of the Dead (New Kingdom) -- the longest and most complex religious tradition in ancient history.
2345 BC – 2181 BC The Sixth Dynasty -- the long decline The Sixth Dynasty (c.2345-2181 BC) spans 164 years and contains the longest reign in Egyptian history -- Pepi II (c.2278-2184 BC), who reigns for approximately 94 years (the longest documented reign of any monarch in history). Despite this longevity, the Sixth Dynasty sees the gradual erosion of central power: provincial governors (nomarchs) become increasingly hereditary and independent, conducting their own trading expeditions to Nubia and Punt and building elaborate provincial tombs that rival royal monuments. The Autobiography of Weni the Elder (a court official who serves three Sixth Dynasty pharaohs) is one of the earliest pieces of historical prose in any language. The dynasty ends in chaos: in the reign of Pepi II's successors (including the short reign of Queen Nitocris, Egypt's first female pharaoh), the central state collapses.
2278 BC – 2184 BC Pepi II -- the longest reign in history Pepi II (c.2278-2184 BC) reigns for approximately 94 years -- the longest documented reign of any monarch in recorded history. He comes to the throne as a child of approximately 6 and lives to be nearly 100. The length of his reign is both a consequence and a cause of Old Kingdom decline: as the pharaoh ages and becomes increasingly infirm, power devolves to provincial governors who cease to be appointed officials and become hereditary rulers in all but name. A famous letter survives in which the young Pepi II writes to an expedition leader who has brought a "dancing dwarf" from central Africa, offering more honours than those given to the officials who brought the treasures of Punt -- revealing the human personality behind the stone face of pharaonic power.
2181 BC – 2055 BC First Intermediate Period -- the great collapse The First Intermediate Period (c.2181-2055 BC) is the first great collapse of Egyptian civilisation -- 126 years of political fragmentation, famine, civil war and cultural disruption following the end of the Old Kingdom. The causes are complex and interrelated: a prolonged drought (c.2200-2150 BC) reduces the Nile floods and causes crop failures across the Near East (the "4.2 kiloyear event" -- a global climate event that also collapses the Akkadian Empire in Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley civilisation); the accumulation of tax exemptions for temples and provincial estates undermines central revenue; and the growing power of nomarchs breaks the unity of the state. Egypt splits into at least two kingdoms: the Herakleopolitan (Ninth-Tenth Dynasty) in the north and the Theban (Eleventh Dynasty) in the south.
