Etruscans: Hellenistic Period & Roman Absorption 19

• 295 BC Battle of Sentinum -- the Etruscans and Samnites defeated The Battle of Sentinum (295 BC) is the decisive engagement of the Third Samnite War, in which Rome defeats a coalition of Samnites, Etruscans, Gauls and Umbrians. The Roman victory at Sentinum ends any realistic prospect of an Italian coalition that could contain Roman expansion. Several Etruscan cities participate in the anti-Roman coalition: their defeat leads directly to the final Roman conquest of Etruria. After Sentinum, the Etruscan city-states are absorbed individually through conquest or treaty over the following century. Etruscan political independence is effectively over, though cultural and social life continues for centuries.
• 280 BC Caere becomes the first Roman ally -- civitas sine suffragio Caere (Cerveteri), the most Hellenised and Rome-friendly of the Etruscan cities, receives Roman citizenship without voting rights (civitas sine suffragio) in c.353 BC -- the first Etruscan community to be incorporated into the Roman state in any form. The 'Caeretan hospitality' (hospitium publicum) that exists between Rome and Caere since the Gallic sack of 390 BC (when Rome's sacred objects were sheltered at Caere) provides the political framework for this early incorporation. Caere's experience becomes the model for the gradual incorporation of other Etruscan communities into the Roman state over the following century.
• 280 BC – 250 BC Tarquinia -- the last great painted tombs Tarquinia continues to produce painted chamber tombs through the Hellenistic period, but the character changes: where Archaic tombs show joyful banqueting scenes in a flower-filled paradise, late Tarquinian tombs (Tomb of Orcus, Tomb of the Blue Demons, Tomb of the Cardinal) show increasingly dark imagery of the underworld journey, demonic escorts and the melancholy of the dead. The Tomb of the Blue Demons (c.400 BC) contains some of the most extraordinary images in Etruscan art: blue-skinned demons with serpent-hair escorting the dead through a genuinely frightening underworld. The shift in afterlife imagery reflects the anxieties of a civilisation under pressure.
• 280 BC – 250 BC The Tomb of the Reliefs -- Caeres last masterpiece The Tomb of the Reliefs at Caere (Banditaccia necropolis, c.300-280 BC) is one of the most elaborately decorated Etruscan tombs: a large underground chamber whose walls and pillars are covered with stucco reliefs depicting the household objects of the deceased -- weapons, armour, kitchen utensils, rope, keys, a gaming board, a goose and a dog -- arranged as if the occupant has just stepped out and will return momentarily. The tomb belongs to the aristocratic Matuna family; inscriptions name 32 family members. It represents both the continued vitality of Etruscan funerary art and the increasingly domestic, intimate character of Hellenistic period tomb decoration.
• 265 BC Volsinii destroyed -- the end of the oldest Etruscan city In 264 BC, Rome destroys Volsinii (modern Orvieto) -- the oldest and most sacred Etruscan city, site of the Fanum Voltumnae (the league sanctuary) and the most important religious centre of the Etruscan world. The destruction follows a slave revolt in which Volsinii's slave population overthrows the aristocracy and takes control of the city. The Etruscan nobles appeal to Rome, who sends an army -- but instead of restoring the aristocracy, Rome destroys the old city entirely and refounds a new one on a different site. Two thousand bronze statues are removed to Rome. The destruction of Volsinii is the symbolic end of Etruscan political independence.
• 264 BC – 241 BC First Punic War -- Etruscan cities supply Rome The First Punic War (264-241 BC) -- Rome's first major overseas conflict, against Carthage -- draws on Etruscan naval expertise and material resources. The Etruscan cities of the Tyrrhenian coast provide timber for Rome's fleet and skilled shipbuilders. The ironically circular outcome: the Etruscans, who had allied with Carthage against the Greeks at the Battle of Alalia in 540 BC, now provide the material basis for Rome's destruction of Carthage. Etruscan metalworking and shipbuilding expertise are among the most practical contributions of the absorbed civilisation to the Roman imperial project.
• 250 BC – 150 BC Hellenistic period ash urns -- Volterra and Chiusi The workshops of Volterra and Chiusi produce thousands of Hellenistic period cinerary urns -- small alabaster, terracotta or limestone boxes with reclining figures on the lid and narrative relief scenes on the front. The scenes -- drawn from Greek mythology (the Theban cycle, the Trojan War, the Oresteia) and Etruscan mythology -- demonstrate the continued vitality of Etruscan craft workshops and the continued importance of funerary art even as the political situation deteriorates. The Volterra alabaster workshops in particular produce work of exceptional quality well into the 1st century BC, by which time Etruria is fully incorporated into the Roman state.
• 250 BC – 200 BC The Arringatore -- the Etruscan orator The Arringatore (Orator), a life-size bronze statue of c.100 BC found near Lake Trasimeno and now in the Museo Archeologico in Florence, depicts a togaed man addressing an assembly with one arm extended -- the canonical gesture of Roman oratory. An inscription on the hem of the toga identifies him as Aule Meteli, a member of the prominent Etruscan Mettii family. The Arringatore is the finest surviving example of Etruscan portraiture and one of the great bronzes of antiquity. It demonstrates that Etruscan bronze-casting maintains its extraordinary quality through the Hellenistic period even as Roman political dominance is complete.
• 250 BC – 200 BC The François Tomb -- Etruscan history painted on the walls The François Tomb at Vulci (c.330-300 BC), discovered in 1857 by Alessandro François, contains the most historically significant paintings in the Etruscan tradition. One wall depicts mythological scenes (Achilles sacrificing Trojan prisoners, Eteocles and Polynices); another -- uniquely -- depicts historical scenes: an Etruscan hero named Macstrna (identified with the Roman king Servius Tullius) and his ally Caile Vipinas freeing their companions from Etruscan, Roman and Latin enemies. The historical scene is the only surviving Etruscan visual narrative of their own history, showing an Etruscan perspective on events that Rome tells differently in its own foundation legends.
• 250 BC – 150 BC The Sarcophagus of Laris Pulenas -- a life in inscriptions The terracotta sarcophagus of Laris Pulenas from Tarquinia (c.200 BC) depicts its occupant reclining and holding an unrolled scroll -- a remarkable object, since the scroll is inscribed with an Etruscan text listing his priestly titles and genealogy. It is the only known example of an Etruscan individual holding a text that identifies him in the context of a funerary monument. The text establishes Laris Pulenas as a member of the Pulenas family and lists his religious functions. The sarcophagus illustrates both the continued importance of literacy and recorded identity in Etruscan culture and the priestly role that certain aristocratic families maintained through the period of Roman conquest.
• 200 BC – 100 BC Etruscan aristocrats in Roman politics -- the Maecenates The Etruscan aristocracy does not simply disappear under Roman rule -- many noble Etruscan families transition smoothly into the Roman senatorial and equestrian orders. The most famous example is Gaius Cilnius Maecenas (c.70-8 BC), the great literary patron of the Augustan age who supported Virgil, Horace and Propertius. Maecenas was immensely proud of his Etruscan ancestry -- he traced his descent from the kings of Arretium (Arezzo). The Caecina, Perperna, Tarquinius and Volumnius families are among many Etruscan gentes that maintain their identity and status within the Roman system for centuries.
• 91 BC – 88 BC Social War -- Etruscans receive full Roman citizenship The Social War (91-87 BC) -- the revolt of Rome's Italian allies demanding full citizenship -- results in the extension of Roman citizenship to virtually all free inhabitants of Italy, including the remaining Etruscan communities. The Lex Julia (90 BC) and the Lex Plautia Papiria (89 BC) grant Roman citizenship to Italian communities that lay down their arms. After the Social War, there are no more 'Etruscans' in a political sense -- all are Roman citizens. Etruscan cultural identity -- language, religious practices, funerary customs -- persists for another century or more, but the legal and political framework that had sustained Etruscan city-state identity is gone.
• 88 BC – 82 BC Sullas proscriptions -- Etruscan cities devastated The civil wars of the late Roman Republic are catastrophic for what remains of Etruscan civic life. Sulla's proscriptions following his victory in the civil war (82 BC) fall disproportionately on Etruria, which had supported his enemy Marius. Sulla confiscates land from Etruscan communities and plants Roman veteran colonies on it, fundamentally disrupting the aristocratic landowning system that had sustained Etruscan culture. Arretium (Arezzo) and Volaterrae (Volterra) are particularly hard hit. The confiscations end the economic basis of the Etruscan aristocratic families who had maintained Etruscan cultural traditions.
• 50 BC – 100 The Etruscan language disappears -- the last inscriptions The Etruscan language is gradually replaced by Latin through the 1st century BC and 1st century AD. The latest Etruscan inscriptions date to c.1st century AD -- by which time they are formulaic epitaphs rather than substantive texts. The Emperor Claudius (41-54 AD) reportedly wrote a history of the Etruscans in 20 volumes (now lost) and was the last Roman aristocrat known to read Etruscan. The haruspices (Etruscan diviners) continue to practise and advise the Roman emperors until the 4th century AD, when the Emperor Constantine's Christianisation of the Empire suppresses pagan religious practices. The last institutional expression of Etruscan culture ends with the outlawing of haruspicy.
• 100 – 400 Etruscan survival in Roman religion -- the haruspices The Etruscan divinatory tradition -- haruspicy, augury and the interpretation of prodigies -- survives as an officially sanctioned Roman religious practice throughout the Empire. The ordo haruspicum (the professional college of Etruscan diviners) is consulted by Roman generals and emperors on the eve of major decisions. When lightning strikes public buildings, when unusual animals are born, when celestial phenomena occur, the haruspices are called. Emperor Julian ('the Apostate,' 361-363 AD) revives haruspicy as part of his attempt to restore paganism. The last attested consultation of the haruspices occurs in 408 AD, when they are asked to advise on Alaric's siege of Rome.
• 1400 – 1800 Renaissance rediscovery -- Etruria comes back to life The Renaissance rediscovery of Etruscan antiquities begins in the 15th century when Tuscan humanists -- aware that their region had been the heartland of a pre-Roman civilization -- begin systematic study of surviving inscriptions and artefacts. Giorgio Vasari notes Etruscan artistic traditions in his Lives of the Artists. The Chimera of Arezzo is found in 1553 and immediately recognised as a masterpiece. The Arringatore, the Capitoline Wolf and numerous bronze statuettes enter princely and papal collections. Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, deliberately cultivates an Etruscan identity for Tuscany, commissioning programmes of Etruscan antiquarian research as political propaganda for Florentine regional identity.
• 1800 – 1900 19th-century tomb excavations -- systematic archaeology begins The 19th century sees the beginning of systematic archaeological investigation of the Etruscan cities and their necropoli. The excavation of the Regolini-Galassi tomb at Caere (1836) by the papal authorities reveals the wealth of the Orientalising period. The François Tomb at Vulci is excavated in 1857. The Tarquinian painted tombs attract the attention of European archaeologists and artists. George Dennis's 'The Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria' (1848), describing his travels through the Etruscan landscape, introduces the Etruscans to a broad British readership. D.H. Lawrence's 'Etruscan Places' (1932) makes them beloved of modernist literary culture.
• 1964 The Pyrgi tablets discovered -- 1964 The discovery of the Pyrgi tablets at the coastal port of Caere in 1964 -- three gold sheets inscribed in Etruscan and Phoenician -- is the most important Etruscan archaeological find of the 20th century. The tablets are the closest thing to a bilingual Etruscan inscription and have significantly advanced the decipherment of the Etruscan language. Their discovery during roadworks near the ancient port of Caere transforms understanding of Etruscan-Phoenician relations and provides concrete evidence for the political history of Caere in the early 5th century BC. The tablets are now displayed in the Villa Giulia Museum in Rome.
• 2023 – present Modern genetics confirms Etruscan origins -- 2023 A landmark study published in Science Advances in 2023, analysing ancient DNA from 82 individuals from Etruscan and contemporary Latin and Italic sites, definitively resolves the ancient debate about Etruscan origins. The study finds that Etruscans are genetically indistinguishable from other Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Italian populations -- they are indigenous Italians, not migrants from Anatolia or Lydia as Herodotus claimed. The Eastern Mediterranean cultural influences visible in Etruscan art and religion arrive through trade networks, not population movement. The genetic study vindicates the position of Dionysius of Halicarnassus, who argued 2,000 years ago that the Etruscans were autochthonous Italians.
