1965 – 1969 Butch Vig -- the producer who made Nevermind Bryan David 'Butch' Vig is born on 2 August 1955 in Viroqua, Wisconsin. He studies drums and percussion at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he meets Steve Marker and Duke Erikson. Through the 1980s Vig produces records at his Smart Studios in Madison, building a reputation for bringing out the best in alternative rock bands. In 1990 Nirvana travels to Madison to record demos with Vig that impress Geffen Records enough to sign them. Vig then produces 'Nevermind' (1991) -- the album that breaks alternative rock into the mainstream and changes popular music. He and Brendan O'Brien split the production credit.
1991 – 1993 Nevermind and Siamese Dream -- Vig at the peak of production Butch Vig produces Nirvana's 'Nevermind' (September 1991) -- the album that sells 30 million copies and defines a generation -- and Smashing Pumpkins' 'Siamese Dream' (July 1993), which sells 15 million copies and establishes the Pumpkins as one of the most important bands of the decade. The back-to-back productions make Vig the most sought-after rock producer in the world. But rather than continuing to produce other bands, he begins making music with his Wisconsin colleagues Marker and Erikson, recording experimental tracks in his spare time. He needs a singer.
1993 – 1994 Shirley Manson joins -- the missing piece Vig sees Shirley Manson performing on a music video programme in the UK -- playing with Edinburgh band Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie and its spin-off Angelfish. Born on 26 August 1966 in Edinburgh, Manson is a classically trained singer who has been performing in Scottish bands since the mid-1980s without breaking through nationally. Vig is immediately struck by her presence and her voice -- cool, slightly sardonic, emotionally direct. He contacts her through her record label. Manson flies to Madison, meets the band, records a few tracks and joins immediately. The four-piece Garbage is complete.
1995 – 1996 Stupid Girl -- a feminist provocation 'Stupid Girl' (1996) is Garbage's breakthrough single -- reaching Number 24 in the US and Number 4 in the UK. The song's title and its lyrics -- directed at a woman who defines herself through a man's desires -- are a feminist statement delivered without preachiness, through the medium of an irresistible pop song. Manson's voice on the track is precisely calibrated: contemptuous of the 'stupid girl' the lyric describes but also uncomfortably aware of the pressures that create her. The song wins a Grammy nomination and establishes Garbage as a band with both commercial appeal and intellectual substance.
1995 Garbage -- the debut album Garbage's self-titled debut album is released on 15 August 1995. Its sound is immediately distinctive: layered to the point of density, combining drum loops and samples with live drums, distorted guitars, keyboards and Manson's voice -- which delivers lyrics about desire, obsession and self-destruction with cool detachment. 'Stupid Girl,' 'Only Happy When It Rains,' 'Queer' and 'Vow' are its singles. The album sells over four million copies worldwide and reaches Number 6 in the UK. The production technique -- building tracks from hundreds of layered elements -- reflects Vig's studio mastery and points toward the digital production methods that will define 2000s rock.
1998 Version 2.0 -- the commercial peak Version 2.0 (May 1998) is Garbage's most commercially successful album -- reaching Number 11 in the US and Number 1 in the UK. 'Push It,' 'Special,' 'I Think I'm Paranoid' and 'The Trick Is to Keep Breathing' (one of Manson's most vulnerable performances, inspired by Janice Galloway's novel of the same name) demonstrate the band's range. The album is nominated for the Mercury Prize and two Grammy Awards. Version 2.0 demonstrates that Garbage can refine and deepen their signature sound while maintaining its commercial accessibility. It sells over three million copies.
1999 James Bond theme -- The World Is Not Enough Garbage records 'The World Is Not Enough' -- the theme song for the James Bond film of the same name -- released in November 1999. The song is a genuine Bond theme in the classic tradition: orchestral sweep, suggestive lyrics and a powerful vocal that places Manson alongside Shirley Bassey and Carly Simon in the canon of Bond vocalists. The theme reaches Number 11 in the UK. Its existence demonstrates Garbage's crossover from alternative rock into mainstream cultural significance -- a Bond theme is as mainstream as it gets.
2001 Beautiful Garbage -- pop ambitions and critical division Beautiful Garbage (October 2001) is the band's most explicitly pop-oriented album -- influenced by 1960s girl groups, glam rock and dance music. Manson wears vintage glamour; the production is more melodic and less abrasive than previous albums. Critical reception is divided: some praise the evolution, others feel the aggressive edge that defined Garbage has been smoothed away. The album reaches Number 6 in the US and Number 5 in the UK -- commercially respectable but a slight decline. It contains 'Androgyny' and 'Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)' -- both inventive but neither matching the impact of earlier singles.
2005 – 2011 Hiatus -- Mansons solo career Garbage goes on indefinite hiatus in 2005 after completing the Bleed Like Me tour. Manson records a solo album -- 'sTranger' (2010) -- that is released to modest commercial attention. She also develops a significant presence as a cultural commentator and activist, writing and speaking about body image, the music industry's treatment of women and LGBTQ+ rights. The hiatus lasts six years. Throughout it, all four members say publicly that Garbage will return; the question is when and in what form.
2005 Bleed Like Me -- personal and political Bleed Like Me (April 2005) returns Garbage to heavier, more guitar-driven territory. The title track -- about self-harm, eating disorders and depression, told through characters named Dillon, Andy, Carve and Georgia -- is one of the most empathetic songs about mental health struggles in rock music. Manson's willingness to address topics that commercial pop avoids is a consistent feature of Garbage's best work. The album reaches Number 4 in the UK. The subsequent tour is cut short when the band announces it is going on hiatus due to internal tensions.
2012 Not Your Kind of People -- the comeback Garbage returns with 'Not Your Kind of People' (May 2012) -- released on their own STUNVOLUME label, bypassing the major label system entirely. The album is self-financed and self-released, funded partly through a PledgeMusic campaign. Its sound is recognisably Garbage but with renewed energy: 'Blood for Poppies,' 'Automatic Systematic Habit' and the title track demonstrate that the six-year hiatus has refreshed rather than diminished the band's creative power. Releasing independently gives Garbage complete creative control and a direct relationship with their audience.
2016 Strange Little Birds -- darker territory Strange Little Birds (June 2016) is Garbage's darkest album -- minimalist, unsettling, influenced by post-punk and goth. Manson's voice is more exposed than on any previous record; the production strips away the dense layering of earlier albums in favour of space and dread. The album receives the strongest critical reviews since Version 2.0. 'Even Though Our Love Is Doomed' and 'Empty' are particularly praised. The album demonstrates that Garbage in their 20s as a band can still challenge themselves and their audience rather than retreating to familiar formulas.
2021 No Gods No Masters -- political fury No Gods No Masters (June 2021) is Garbage's most politically explicit album -- released into a world of pandemic, Black Lives Matter, climate crisis and populist authoritarianism. 'The Men Who Rule the World,' 'Anonymous XXX' and 'Wolves' address power, exploitation and resistance with a directness that goes beyond previous Garbage records. Manson's public activism and her social media presence -- where she regularly challenges sexism in the music industry and advocates for progressive causes -- are reflected in the album's uncompromising tone. It is their strongest record in two decades.
2024 – present Shirley Manson -- one of rocks great voices Shirley Manson has become, over 30 years, one of the most admired and articulate figures in rock music -- not just as a vocalist but as a cultural commentator, feminist voice and advocate for mental health awareness. Her willingness to discuss her own struggles with body image, depression and the music industry's exploitation of women sets her apart from contemporaries who maintain carefully managed public images. Garbage, still active and still releasing music of genuine quality in their fourth decade, are proof that a band can maintain artistic integrity across an entire career.
