Their relationship is depicted in conventional terms in the official record -- Hatshepsut supports her husband, appears in the approved subordinate position in temple reliefs. But she is clearly the more forceful personality: Thutmose II's monuments are few, his campaigns limited, his physical health apparently poor (his mummy shows signs of skin disease and premature aging). He dies c.1479 BC, leaving as his heir the infant Thutmose III by a secondary wife (Iset). This argument is made explicitly in multiple inscriptions: "I am his daughter in very truth, who serves him, who knows what he decrees. My reward from him is the fact that I flourish; he has made me Maatkare, who illuminates the two lands." The emphasis on Amun's direct choice -- bypassing the normal rules of male succession -- is Hatshepsut's most effective legitimisation strategy. It positions her authority as divine mandate rather than human convention. She is approximately 50 years old. The transition of power to Thutmose III is smooth -- he has been co-pharaoh throughout her reign and is already experienced in military and administrative matters. The erasure of her name begins approximately 20 years later (c.1438-1425 BC), suggesting that Thutmose III's primary motive is succession management (ensuring the smooth transfer of power to his own son Amenhotep II) rather than immediate personal revenge. Hatshepsut's senior officials (Senenmut, Hapuseneb) disappear from the record around the time of her death, possibly having died naturally or been dismissed. The magnificent temple at Deir el-Bahari continues to function as a mortuary cult centre for centuries after her death, despite the erasure of her name from its walls.
1479 BC – 1458 BC Deir el-Bahari -- the temple of eternity Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari (Djeser-Djeseru, "Holy of Holies"), designed by Senenmut and built c.1479-1458 BC, is the most perfectly preserved and most architecturally elegant New Kingdom temple -- three colonnaded terraces rising against the natural cliff of the Theban mountain, connected by ramps, framed by gardens and reflecting pools. He holds simultaneously the positions of High Priest of Amun and Vizier -- an unprecedented combination of religious and administrative power that reflects both his personal ability and Hatshepsut's need for powerful supporters. 1479 BC – 1458 BC Hatshepsut's mummy identified -- the tooth match The identification of Hatshepsut's mummy in 2007 by Egyptian Egyptologist Zahi Hawass is one of the most dramatic moments in modern Egyptology. The tomb KV60 in the Valley of the Kings contains two female mummies: one in a fine decorated coffin (identified as Sitre-In, Hatshepsut's wet nurse), and one on the floor in a plain coffin. The greatest missing pharaoh of the New Kingdom is found not in her elaborate prepared sarcophagus but on the floor of a nurse's tomb, abandoned there for safety during the tomb-robbing crisis of the Twentieth Dynasty.
1479 BC – 1458 BC Hatshepsut's tomb -- KV20 Hatshepsut's tomb in the Valley of the Kings (KV20) is one of the most unusual and technically ambitious in the valley. It is the first tomb to penetrate the mountain deep enough to emerge below the mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari -- a deliberate design that places the burial chamber directly beneath the temple's innermost sanctuary, connecting the underground world of the dead to the above-ground world of ritual. The tomb descends approximately 210 metres into the mountain in a series of descending corridors and chambers, spiraling to maintain the connection with the temple above. It was originally prepared for Thutmose I (Hatshepsut reburials her father here), then enlarged for Hatshepsut's own burial. Two yellow quartzite sarcophagi (one for Hatshepsut, one for Thutmose I) were found by Howard Carter in 1903 -- both empty. 1479 BC – 1458 BC Miners and quarrymen -- the workers of Hatshepsut Hatshepsut's ambitious building programme requires an enormous workforce of miners, quarrymen, transport workers and craftsmen. The granite for her obelisks comes from the quarries at Aswan (700km from Karnak); the electrum for their tips from Nubia; the painted limestone for Deir el-Bahari from the Theban limestone quarries. An inscription at Aswan records the quarrying of the two Karnak obelisks: the entire operation (quarrying, shaping, loading onto a specially built barge capable of carrying two 320-tonne monoliths simultaneously, towing to Karnak, unloading and erecting) is completed in 7 months -- an extraordinary logistical achievement. The barge required to carry the two obelisks is approximately 100 metres long -- the longest wooden vessel of the ancient world. A relief in the Deir el-Bahari portico shows the two obelisks on the barge, surrounded by escort boats, with crews celebrating their delivery.
1479 BC – 1458 BC Neferure -- the royal daughter Neferure (c.1476-c.1458 BC), Hatshepsut's daughter by Thutmose II, is the only known child of Hatshepsut and holds an unusual position in the royal court. She is depicted from infancy wearing the royal side-lock of youth and the uraeus (the royal cobra -- a symbol normally reserved for the royal heir) -- suggesting that Hatshepsut may have considered her daughter as her potential successor, or at least as a royal figure of considerable significance. Her tutor is Senenmut (Hatshepsut's chief official), who is depicted holding the infant Neferure in multiple statues -- an unprecedented intimate depiction of a commoner holding a royal child. Neferure disappears from the record c.1458 BC -- she may have died before Hatshepsut, or been deliberately erased from the record along with her mother. She does not become pharaoh.
1479 BC – 1458 BC Senenmut -- the architect and favourite Senenmut (c.1480-1457 BC), Hatshepsut's chief steward and architect, is the most important official of her reign and the subject of considerable speculation about his relationship with the queen. His titles accumulate to over 80 -- the most of any official in Egyptian history -- including: Chief Steward of Amun, Overseer of All Royal Works, Tutor to the Princess Neferure (Hatshepsut's daughter). He designs and oversees the construction of Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari -- the greatest architectural achievement of the New Kingdom. His own tomb at Deir el-Bahari (TT71) contains the first astronomical ceiling in a private tomb -- a star map of extraordinary precision. Graffiti near Deir el-Bahari show Senenmut in a sexually compromising position with a figure wearing the pharaoh's double crown -- evidence (if interpreted correctly) of a sexual relationship with Hatshepsut. He disappears from the record c.1457 BC, shortly before her death.
1479 BC – 1458 BC Speos Artemidos -- the desert temple The Speos Artemidos ("Grotto of Artemis" -- the Greek name given by Ptolemaic visitors), a rock-cut temple dedicated to the lion-goddess Pakhet at Beni Hassan in Middle Egypt, is one of Hatshepsut's most significant provincial building projects. The temple's facade bears a long dedicatory text by Hatshepsut that is unusual in its explicit condemnation of the Hyksos: "I have restored that which was ruined. I have raised up that which was unfinished since the Asiatics were in Avaris of the North Land... I do not allow those who are foreign to be restored." This text -- asserting Hatshepsut's role as the restorer of Egypt after the Hyksos interlude -- invokes the same ideological framework used by Ahmose I in founding the New Kingdom. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The Karnak obelisks -- reaching for the sun Hatshepsut erects four obelisks at Karnak -- two pairs, the second pair (erected in Year 16, c.1463 BC) between the fourth and fifth pylons, are the tallest obelisks in Egypt: 29.6 metres high and weighing approximately 320 tonnes each. Their bases are originally covered in electrum (gold-silver alloy) to catch the first rays of the rising sun -- visible throughout the Theban valley. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The Met's Hatshepsut collection -- the finest statues The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds the finest collection of Hatshepsut statuary in the world -- approximately 10 major sculptures and numerous fragments from the Deir el-Bahari pit, excavated by the museum's Egyptian Expedition (1911-1936) under Herbert Winlock. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The Punt reliefs -- a voyage in stone The Punt expedition reliefs at Deir el-Bahari (the northern colonnade of the second terrace) are the most detailed ancient depiction of a foreign land and its people. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The Red Chapel -- Hatshepsut's bark shrine The Red Chapel (Chapelle Rouge) at Karnak, built by Hatshepsut c.1479-1458 BC as a bark shrine for the sacred bark of Amun, is one of the finest examples of New Kingdom relief art -- its red quartzite blocks decorated with alternating reliefs of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III performing the religious rituals of kingship. The chapel is dismantled after Hatshepsut's death and its blocks used as fill in the Third Pylon of Karnak by Amenhotep III. Rediscovered in the 1990s, the blocks have been painstakingly reassembled and the Red Chapel now stands reconstructed in the Karnak Open Air Museum -- one of the most significant New Kingdom architectural restorations. The chapel's reliefs show Hatshepsut in her standard alternating presentation: sometimes in female form, sometimes in male guise, but always performing the same rituals as her male counterparts.

Thutmose I (Hatshepsut's father) may not himself be of fully royal blood -- he achieves the throne by marrying the royal princess Ahmose (a daughter or granddaughter of Ahmose I). Hatshepsut is his daughter by Ahmose but not by the secondary wife who bears Thutmose II. Thutmose III is Thutmose II's son by a secondary wife (Iset) -- not Hatshepsut's son. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The Valley of the Kings under Hatshepsut -- the secret necropolis Hatshepsut plays a central role in establishing the Valley of the Kings as the definitive royal necropolis of the New Kingdom. While Thutmose I is possibly the first pharaoh buried there, it is under Hatshepsut's administration that the valley's systematic use is established -- she prepares her own tomb (KV20) and reburials Thutmose I there, establishing the precedent of the valley as the exclusive royal burial ground. The workers at Deir el-Medina who build and decorate the tombs become a permanent institution under Hatshepsut; their village (founded by Thutmose I) is expanded and regularised. The sequence of scenes: Amun (shown in the form of Thutmose I) approaches the sleeping Queen Ahmose; the gods Khnum and Hathor fashion the royal body and ka on the potter's wheel; the queen gives birth; the infant is presented to the gods; Amun acknowledges the child as his daughter. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The eighth pylon -- Karnak expands south Hatshepsut's eighth pylon at Karnak -- built c.1463 BC on the north-south axis of the temple complex, perpendicular to the main east-west axis -- is one of her most significant architectural contributions. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The incense trees -- the first botanical garden The 31 living myrrh trees transported from Punt to Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari (c.1470 BC) represent the world's first recorded botanical transplantation -- the earliest attempt to grow exotic plants outside their native habitat for purposes beyond immediate food production. The trees are shown in the Punt expedition reliefs being carefully dug up with their root balls, carried in baskets to the Egyptian ships, and planted in the garden in front of Hatshepsut's temple. Whether any of the trees survived in the Theban desert environment (far drier and cooler than Eritrea/Somalia, where myrrh trees grow naturally) is unknown -- no botanical evidence survives. 1479 BC – 1458 BC The obelisks' electrum tips -- catching the sunrise The electrum tips of Hatshepsut's Karnak obelisks are one of the most extraordinary material investments in Egyptian architectural history. Electrum (a naturally occurring gold-silver alloy, approximately 75% gold and 25% silver) is the most precious metal in ancient Egypt -- rarer and more valuable than pure gold. The electrum capping on the obelisk tips is not merely decorative but functional: it catches the first rays of the rising sun and reflects them back across the Theban valley, making the obelisks visible from enormous distances as blazing points of light. Hatshepsut's own inscription on the surviving obelisk records: "I have made for him two great obelisks... of electrum... in order that my name may endure in this temple for ever and ever." The electrum is brought from Nubia by the annual tribute -- the gold-mining region of Upper Nubia providing the raw material for this most conspicuous display of royal piety and power.
1479 BC – 1473 BC The regency -- regent becomes pharaoh When Thutmose III inherits the throne at approximately 2 years old (c.1479 BC), Hatshepsut becomes his regent -- the standard arrangement for a child king. The regency period (c.1479-1473 BC) sees Hatshepsut gradually asserting more independent authority: in the second year of Thutmose III's reign, she begins to appear in the official record without the regent title; by Year 7 (c.1473 BC) she takes the full pharaonic titulary -- five royal names including a throne name (Maatkare) -- and begins to appear in monuments wearing the double crown and the false beard of kingship. The transition is not a coup -- Thutmose III continues as co-pharaoh throughout her reign -- but a gradual assumption of full pharaonic authority by the more powerful and more experienced of the two rulers. Whether Thutmose III acquiesces willingly or is simply too young to resist is unknown.
1479 BC – 1458 BC The statues of Hatshepsut -- a gallery of the self The statuary programme of Hatshepsut is the most diverse self-presentation of any individual pharaoh -- a deliberate exploration of how a female pharaoh can be legitimately represented within the conventions of Egyptian royal art. The approximately 200 known statues of Hatshepsut (many from the Deir el-Bahari pit) show her: seated in the traditional pharaoh's pose, hands on knees, wearing the khat headcloth (male-coded) with a distinctly female face; kneeling to present offerings, wearing the atef crown; as a sphinx (the lion body of royal power with her female face); offering nemset vases (a ritual pose); and in the "kneeling sphinx" pose, unique to Hatshepsut in the New Kingdom. Traditional scholarship (following Herbert Winlock and James Henry Breasted) portrays it as one of bitter resentment -- the brilliant future warrior-pharaoh forced into subordination by his scheming step-mother. The choice of Maatkare is not random but a deliberate theological statement: Hatshepsut claims to embody Ma'at (as every legitimate pharaoh does) and to be sustained by the solar Ra (as every pharaoh from the Fifth Dynasty onwards is). Her full five-part titulary identifies her as: Horus "Mighty of Kas"; Nebty "Flourishing of Years"; Golden Horus "Divine of Appearances"; King of Upper and Lower Egypt "Maatkare"; and "Daughter of Ra, Hatshepsut, united with Amun." The inclusion of "Daughter of Ra" alongside the royal titles acknowledges her female identity even within the male-coded framework of pharaonic legitimacy.
1470 BC – 1469 BC The Punt expedition -- Hatshepsut's greatest adventure Hatshepsut's expedition to the Land of Punt (c.1470 BC) is the most fully documented Egyptian expedition to Punt and one of the most remarkable trading voyages of the ancient world. Five large ships sail from the Red Sea port of Mersa Gawasis south to Punt, where they are met by the Puntite chief Parehu and his famously obese wife (depicted in the Deir el-Bahari reliefs with extraordinary physical specificity -- she has been retrospectively diagnosed with a metabolic disorder). The Egyptians trade necklaces, hatchets and daggers for: 31 living myrrh trees (to be transplanted at Deir el-Bahari), ebony, pure ivory, gold, cinnamon wood, khesyt wood, ihmut incense, green gold, eye cosmetics, apes, monkeys, dogs, and the skins of the southern panther. The myrrh trees are the first botanical transplantation in recorded history -- Hatshepsut's "garden" at Deir el-Bahari is the world's first botanical garden.
1458 BC – 1438 BC The erasure -- history undone The systematic erasure of Hatshepsut's name and image from Egyptian monuments, begun approximately 20-25 years after her death (c.1438-1425 BC) under Thutmose III, is the most thorough damnatio memoriae (condemnation of memory) in ancient history. Her face is hacked from reliefs at Deir el-Bahari and Karnak; her name is chiselled out of inscriptions and replaced with those of Thutmose I, II or III; her statues are smashed and buried in pits at Deir el-Bahari; her obelisks are encased in masonry (which actually preserves them). The thoroughness of the erasure is so complete that Hatshepsut is unknown to historians until 1822 (when Champollion deciphers hieroglyphs) and not identified as a woman until the 1820s-1840s (when the grammar of the female forms in her inscriptions is recognised). Why Thutmose III erases her -- personal revenge, legitimacy concerns, succession management -- remains debated. The scale of the erasure suggests systematic official policy rather than personal rage.
