J.R.R. Tolkien 29

• 1892 J.R.R. Tolkien born in Bloemfontein, South Africa John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is born on 3 January 1892 in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State (now South Africa), where his father Arthur Tolkien is a bank manager. The family is English; Bloemfontein is a colonial outpost of the British Empire. Ronald — as he is always called — finds the South African climate harsh and the landscape alien. He returns to England with his mother Mabel and brother Hilary in 1895 when Ronald is three, while Arthur remains in Bloemfontein. Arthur Tolkien dies of rheumatic fever in February 1896 before the family can return.
• 1896 Father dies — family settles in Sarehole Arthur Tolkien dies in Bloemfontein on 15 February 1896. Mabel Tolkien, now a widow with two small boys and limited income, settles in Sarehole — then a rural village south of Birmingham — where Ronald spends four formative years. Sarehole's mill, fields, hedgerows and local characters (including a farmer the boys nickname 'The Black Ogre') leave deep impressions on Tolkien's imagination. He later identifies Sarehole as the primary landscape of the Shire. The rural English idyll he discovers there — and its loss as Birmingham's suburbs swallow the village — haunts his work.
• 1900 Mother converts to Catholicism Mabel Tolkien converts to Roman Catholicism in 1900, bringing Ronald and Hilary with her. The conversion alienates her family and cuts off financial support from her Baptist relatives. The family's already constrained finances become desperate. Tolkien's Catholicism — deep, orthodox and lifelong — is one of the most important facts about him. It shapes his mythology (the monotheism of Ilúvatar, the eucatastrophe as theological concept, the treatment of death and immortality) and his moral imagination. He later credits his mother with his faith and considers her a martyr for it.
• 1904 Mother dies — Father Francis Morgan becomes guardian Mabel Tolkien dies of diabetes on 14 November 1904, aged 34 — her health undermined, Tolkien always believed, by the stress of her family's rejection after her conversion. Ronald is 12; Hilary 10. Before her death, Mabel entrusts the boys to Father Francis Morgan, a Catholic priest and family friend. Morgan becomes one of the most important figures in Tolkien's life — a warm, generous father-figure who manages a small trust for the boys and supervises their education. Tolkien later wrote that his mother 'was a martyr indeed, and it is not to everybody that God grants so easy a way to his great gifts as he did to Hilary and myself, giving us a mother who killed herself with labour and trouble.'
• 1908 Meets Edith Bratt — forbidden love Tolkien, lodging in Birmingham as a King Edward's School scholarship student, meets Edith Bratt — a fellow lodger, three years his senior, an orphan and a talented pianist. They fall in love. Father Morgan discovers the relationship and forbids any contact until Tolkien is 21, fearing the distraction will ruin his Oxford scholarship chances. Tolkien obeys scrupulously, not writing a single letter to Edith for three years. On the stroke of midnight on his 21st birthday (3 January 1913) he writes to her immediately. She has become engaged to another man; he proposes; she accepts. Tolkien models Beren and Lúthien on himself and Edith.
• 1910 – 1911 King Edwards School — the Tea Club and Barrovian Society At King Edward's School in Birmingham, Tolkien forms the Tea Club and Barrovian Society (TCBS) with three close friends: Christopher Wiseman, Robert Gilson and Geoffrey Bache Smith. The four share literary and artistic ambitions, reading their work to each other and dreaming of reshaping English literature. The TCBS is the prototype for the Inklings that follows two decades later. All four serve in World War I: Gilson and Smith are killed on the Somme in 1916. The loss of his closest friends devastates Tolkien and accelerates his mythological work.
• 1911 – 1915 Exeter College, Oxford — Old English revelation Tolkien wins a scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford in 1911, initially reading Classics before switching to English Language and Literature. The switch is decisive: his exposure to Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Middle English, Norse and Finnish literature reveals the linguistic and mythological world he will spend his life exploring. He discovers the Finnish Kalevala and begins teaching himself Finnish — its structure inspiring the sound system of Quenya, his first invented Elvish language. He graduates with a First Class degree in 1915.
• 1914 First invented language — Quenya begins Tolkien begins constructing his first Elvish language — initially called Qenya (later Quenya) — as early as 1910–1914, drawing on Finnish phonology and Latin grammar. The construction of a fully developed invented language, complete with grammar, vocabulary and literary tradition, is Tolkien's most distinctive creative act. Languages are not decorative features of his world — they are its foundation. The peoples of Middle-earth exist because Tolkien needed someone to speak the languages he was creating. 'The invention of languages is the foundation,' he later wrote. 'The stories were made rather to provide a world for the languages than the reverse.'
• 1916 World War I — the Battle of the Somme Tolkien serves as a signals officer with the 11th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers and arrives in France in June 1916, just in time for the Battle of the Somme — one of the bloodiest battles in military history. He fights at the Somme through the summer of 1916. His two closest TCBS friends — Robert Gilson, killed 1 July 1916 (the first day of the Somme), and Geoffrey Bache Smith, who dies of wounds in December 1916 — are among the 420,000 British casualties. Tolkien contracts trench fever in October 1916 and is invalided home. He begins writing 'The Fall of Gondolin' in a military hospital.
• 1917 The Book of Lost Tales — mythology begins While recovering from trench fever in 1916–1917, Tolkien begins 'The Book of Lost Tales' — the first version of what will eventually become The Silmarillion. Edith, now his wife, reads the stories aloud as he writes them. The mythology begins to take shape: Valinor, the Elves, Melkor, the Silmarils, the story of Túrin Turambar. In a wood near Roos in Yorkshire, Edith dances for him among hemlock flowers — the image that becomes the story of Beren and Lúthien, which Tolkien considered his most personal and important tale. Both their graves at Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford, bear the names 'Beren' and 'Lúthien.'
• 1919 – 1920 Oxford English Dictionary — working with words After the war, Tolkien works as an assistant lexicographer on the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) from 1919 to 1920, assigned to the W section. The work involves tracing the etymology and history of English words — perfect training for a man who will spend his life thinking about the history of invented words in invented languages. He is particularly fascinated by 'walrus' and 'waggle.' The OED experience deepens his understanding of how words evolve and how they carry historical meaning — insights directly relevant to his linguistic world-building.
• 1920 – 1925 Professor at Leeds — Sindarin language developed Tolkien is appointed Reader in English Language at the University of Leeds in 1920, becoming Professor of English Language in 1924 at the age of 32 — one of the youngest professors in Leeds history. At Leeds he develops his second Elvish language, Sindarin (based on Welsh phonology), and begins refining the mythological framework of the Silmarillion. He also co-authors 'A Middle English Vocabulary' and edits 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' — academic work of high quality that establishes his scholarly reputation.
• 1925 Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon, Oxford Tolkien is elected Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford in 1925 — one of the most prestigious chairs in the university — at the age of 33. He returns to Oxford, where he had been an undergraduate, and settles there for the rest of his academic life. Oxford gives him the institutional home, the colleagues and the time that allow him to develop his mythology alongside serious academic work. He revitalises the study of Old English at Oxford and becomes an enormously popular lecturer.
• 1926 Meets C.S. Lewis — the Inklings form Tolkien meets C.S. Lewis at an Oxford faculty meeting in May 1926. Lewis, an atheist at the time, finds Tolkien 'a smooth, pale, fluent little chap.' The friendship that develops between them becomes one of the most famous in literary history. Together with Charles Williams, Owen Barfield and others, they form the Inklings — an informal group that meets weekly at the Eagle and Child pub (nicknamed 'The Bird and Baby') to read and discuss their work in progress. Tolkien reads chapters of The Silmarillion and The Hobbit to the Inklings for years before publication.
• 1929 Tolkien converts C.S. Lewis to Christianity In a long nocturnal conversation on Addison's Walk in Oxford on 19–20 September 1931, Tolkien and Hugo Dyson convince C.S. Lewis that Christianity is not a myth but rather the myth that is also true — the one story that really happened. Lewis converts to Christianity within days, to Anglicanism rather than Tolkien's Catholicism. The conversion is one of the great intellectual friendships bearing fruit: Lewis goes on to write Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters and the Chronicles of Narnia. Tolkien's concept of myth as a vehicle for truth — directly expressed in his poem 'Mythopoeia' — is the seed of Lewis's faith.
• 1930 The Hobbit begins — a blank page, an unexpected sentence While marking School Certificate papers in the summer of 1930, Tolkien finds a blank page in a student's exam book and writes: 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.' He does not know what a hobbit is. He spends the next years finding out. The sentence — one of the most famous opening gambits in children's literature — arrives without premeditation. Tolkien later said he never knew where it came from. The Hobbit begins as a story told to his children, expands into a written manuscript, and slowly connects to the mythology of the Silmarillion through the discovery of the One Ring.
• 1936 Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics — landmark lecture Tolkien delivers his landmark lecture 'Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics' to the British Academy in 1936 — the most influential piece of Beowulf scholarship in the 20th century. Before Tolkien, critics treated Beowulf's monsters (Grendel, Grendel's mother, the dragon) as embarrassing intrusions into what should be a historical document. Tolkien argues that the monsters are the point — that Beowulf is a fundamentally elegiac poem about the hero facing doom with dignity, and that its monsters embody the chaos that ultimately defeats human greatness. The lecture transforms Beowulf studies and illuminates the thematic concerns of Tolkien's own mythology.
• 1937 The Hobbit published — immediate success The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is published by George Allen & Unwin on 21 September 1937. Publisher Stanley Unwin had given the typescript to his 10-year-old son Rayner to read; Rayner's report ('This book, with the help of maps, does not need any illustrations it is good and should appeal to all children between the ages of 5 and 9') results in publication. The first edition of 1,500 copies sells out before Christmas. It wins the New York Herald Tribune prize for best children's book of the season. Allen & Unwin immediately request a sequel. Tolkien begins thinking about 'a new Hobbit.'
• 1937 – 1949 Writing The Lord of the Rings — twelve years Tolkien begins writing The Lord of the Rings in December 1937 and does not complete it until 1949 — twelve years of composition alongside full-time academic duties, the demands of wartime Oxford and the raising of four children. The book grows far beyond The Hobbit in scale, darkness and ambition; what begins as a children's sequel becomes a mythological epic. Tolkien writes and rewrites obsessively, getting stuck for months at a time. He reads chapters to the Inklings, who urge him on. Lewis's enthusiasm is particularly important: he tells Tolkien that if he doesn't finish it, Lewis will never speak to him again.
• 1949 – 1954 Publication battle — finding a publisher Tolkien completes The Lord of the Rings in 1949 but it takes five more years to reach print. He initially tries to have it published together with The Silmarillion; Allen & Unwin decline the package. Collins considers it but their editor Milton Waldman dies, stalling negotiations for two years. Finally Allen & Unwin agree to publish in three volumes at their own financial risk. The conditions — Tolkien receives no advance and shares profits only after costs — reflect the publisher's uncertainty about whether this enormous, peculiar book will find an audience.
• 1954 – 1955 The Lord of the Rings published The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers are published on 29 July 1954; The Return of the King follows on 20 October 1955. The reviews are divided: W.H. Auden calls it 'a masterpiece'; C.S. Lewis proclaims it 'lightning from a clear sky'; Edmund Wilson dismisses it as 'juvenile trash.' The book sells steadily but not spectacularly in the UK. Then in 1965 an unauthorised American paperback edition by Ace Books — exploiting a copyright technicality — triggers an explosion of popularity that makes The Lord of the Rings a cultural phenomenon.
• 1959 Tolkien retires from Oxford Tolkien retires from his Oxford chair in 1959, having been Merton Professor of English Language and Literature since 1945. He is 67. Retirement is meant to free him to complete The Silmarillion, which he has been working on since 1917. Instead, the combination of fan mail (which he answers personally and at enormous length), the demands of his publisher and his own perfectionism prevent him from finishing it. The Silmarillion remains incomplete and unpublished at his death — its publication in 1977 is the work of his son Christopher.
• 1965 American paperback — cult phenomenon on US campuses An unauthorised paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings published by Ace Books in the United States in 1965 — exploiting a copyright technicality to avoid paying Tolkien royalties — triggers the first great wave of American Tolkien mania. Tolkien authorises a rival Ballantine Books edition; American fans, appalled by Ace's piracy, campaign to 'pirate Ace' by refusing to buy the unauthorised edition. The resulting publicity makes The Lord of the Rings a campus phenomenon: 'Frodo Lives' buttons appear across American universities; Tolkien receives 10,000 letters a year; the phrase 'Tolkienian' enters the language.
• 1968 Tolkien and Edith move to Bournemouth The volume of visitors and fan mail at their Oxford home becomes overwhelming, and Tolkien moves with Edith to Bournemouth in 1968 — a seaside town where Edith has friends and where their address is less well-known. Tolkien is miserable away from Oxford, his libraries and the Inklings (C.S. Lewis had died in 1963; other friends are dead or scattered). He commutes to Oxford frequently. The Bournemouth years are productive for Tolkien in one respect: freed from constant interruption, he makes significant progress on the appendices and revisions to The Silmarillion.
• 1971 Edith Tolkien dies — Lúthien Edith Mary Tolkien dies on 29 November 1971, aged 82. On her gravestone at Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford, Tolkien has inscribed the name 'Lúthien' — after the Elvish maiden who gives up her immortality for love of the mortal Beren. The inscription makes explicit what Tolkien had always believed: that his own story with Edith was the primary story of his mythology. He writes to his son Christopher: 'She was (and knew she was) my Lúthien.' He returns to Oxford after Edith's death and is elected an Honorary Fellow of Merton College.
• 1972 CBE and honorary doctorate — official recognition Tolkien receives a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in March 1972 and an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in June 1972. The official recognition comes late — Tolkien has been the most widely read author in the world for several years by this point — but the academic establishment's formal acknowledgement of his achievement clearly pleases him. He is 80 years old, increasingly frail, and aware that The Silmarillion remains unfinished.
• 1973 J.R.R. Tolkien dies in Bournemouth — aged 81 Tolkien dies on 2 September 1973 in Bournemouth, aged 81, from a chest infection and bleeding gastric ulcer. He is buried beside Edith at Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford; his gravestone bears the name 'Beren.' The Silmarillion — the mythology he had worked on for 56 years — remains unfinished. His son Christopher Tolkien devotes the next four decades to editing and publishing his father's posthumous writings: The Silmarillion (1977), Unfinished Tales (1980), and the twelve-volume History of Middle-earth (1983–1996). The world Tolkien created outlives him by a century.
• 1977 The Silmarillion published posthumously Christopher Tolkien edits and publishes The Silmarillion in September 1977 — four years after his father's death. The book contains the mythology Tolkien had worked on since 1917: the creation of Arda, the Ainulindalë, the Quenta Silmarillion (the history of the Silmarils and the wars of the First Age), the Akallabêth (the fall of Númenor) and Of the Rings of Power. It becomes an immediate bestseller despite its difficulty. Christopher subsequently publishes twelve further volumes of his father's posthumous writings, creating the most extensive record of a literary world-building process in history.
• 2003 "Greatest Briton" polls — enduring cultural impact In the BBC's 'The Big Read' poll of 2003 — asking the British public to vote for their favourite novel — The Lord of the Rings is voted the greatest book ever written, ahead of Pride and Prejudice, His Dark Materials and Jane Eyre. Similar polls in subsequent years consistently place Tolkien's work at the top. Combined sales of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings exceed 600 million copies. Tolkien's invented languages (Quenya and Sindarin) are spoken by thousands of enthusiasts worldwide. The depth of reader engagement with Middle-earth — maps studied, genealogies memorised, languages learned — is unprecedented in literary history.
