Karl Marx Timeline

Karl Marx 30

1818 Birth in Trier Born into a middle-class family in the Rhineland Karl Heinrich Marx was born on May 5, 1818, in Trier, in the Kingdom of Prussia, to Heinrich Marx, a lawyer, and Henriette Pressburg. His father converted the family from Judaism to Lutheranism in 1816 to retain his legal career amid Prussian restrictions on Jewish professionals. Marx grew up in a comfortable, well-educated household influenced by Enlightenment ideals, attending the Trier Gymnasium before pursuing university studies.
1835 – 1836 University of Bonn Begins law studies, joins student life In 1835, Marx enrolled at the University of Bonn to study law, following his father's wishes. He joined the Trier Tavern Club and became involved in student drinking societies, even fighting a duel, which worried his father. His grades suffered amid the distractions of student life, prompting his father to transfer him to the more serious academic environment of the University of Berlin the following year.
1836 Engagement to Jenny von Westphalen Secret engagement to a childhood friend Marx became secretly engaged to Jenny von Westphalen, a baroness and childhood friend from Trier whose family belonged to the Prussian aristocracy. The match was controversial given the class difference between the Marx and von Westphalen families. The couple would marry seven years later, in 1843, and Jenny became Marx's lifelong intellectual partner and collaborator, enduring poverty and exile at his side.
1836 – 1841 University of Berlin and Young Hegelians Immersion in Hegelian philosophy At the University of Berlin, Marx abandoned law for philosophy and history, falling under the influence of the Young Hegelians, a group of radical thinkers who applied Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's dialectical method to critique religion and politics. Marx joined the Doctors' Club, engaging with figures such as Bruno Bauer. This period shaped his early dialectical thinking and his eventual break with idealist philosophy in favor of materialism.
1841 Doctoral Degree from Jena PhD on Democritus and Epicurus Marx received his doctorate in philosophy in 1841 from the University of Jena, submitting his dissertation from a distance after his radical reputation made a Berlin degree unlikely. Titled "The Difference Between the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature," the dissertation examined ancient materialist philosophy and hinted at Marx's later concern with human freedom and self-consciousness. He hoped for an academic career, but Prussian government hostility toward Young Hegelians closed that path.
1842 – 1843 Editor of Rheinische Zeitung Journalism and early political writing Denied an academic career, Marx turned to journalism, becoming editor of the liberal Cologne newspaper Rheinische Zeitung in 1842. His outspoken articles on poverty, press freedom, and Prussian politics drew the ire of censors, and the paper was suppressed by the government in early 1843. This experience sharpened Marx's interest in economic and social conditions as the drivers of political life.
1843 – 1845 Exile in Paris Radicalization and meeting Engels Facing political persecution in Prussia, Marx moved to Paris in late 1843, where he encountered socialist and communist circles and deepened his critique of capitalism. There he co-edited the short-lived Deutsch-Franzosische Jahrbucher and wrote the "Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844," developing his theory of alienated labor. In 1844 he met Friedrich Engels, beginning a lifelong collaboration and friendship that would prove central to the development and dissemination of Marxist thought.
1843 Marriage to Jenny von Westphalen Wedding in Kreuznach Karl Marx and Jenny von Westphalen married on June 19, 1843, in Bad Kreuznach. The couple would go on to have seven children, though only three survived to adulthood, as poverty and repeated exile took a heavy toll on the family. Jenny transcribed and edited many of Marx's manuscripts and shared in the hardships of his political persecution throughout their lives.
1845 – 1846 The German Ideology Formulating historical materialism with Engels Marx and Engels co-wrote "The German Ideology" in 1845-46, systematically laying out the theory of historical materialism, which holds that the material conditions of a society's mode of production fundamentally shape its social, political, and intellectual life. The manuscript, unpublished in Marx's lifetime, also contained a sustained polemic against the Young Hegelians and "true socialists." It remains a foundational text for understanding Marx's conception of history.
1845 Theses on Feuerbach Break from Feuerbachian materialism While in Brussels, Marx composed the brief but influential "Theses on Feuerbach," eleven aphoristic notes criticizing the limitations of Ludwig Feuerbach's contemplative materialism. The eleventh thesis became one of Marx's most quoted lines: "Philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it." The theses marked Marx's decisive turn toward a practice-oriented, historical materialist philosophy.
1845 Expulsion from France Pressure from the Prussian government At the request of the Prussian government, French authorities expelled Marx from Paris in early 1845 due to his radical journalism. He relocated with his family to Brussels, Belgium, where he would remain for the next several years, continuing his political and theoretical work alongside Engels while formally renouncing his Prussian citizenship.
1847 The Poverty of Philosophy Polemic against Proudhon Marx published "The Poverty of Philosophy" in 1847 as a critical response to French anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's "The Philosophy of Poverty." The work sharpened Marx's critique of utopian socialism and outlined his own emerging economic theory, including early ideas about class conflict and the labor theory of value that he would later expand in "Das Kapital."
1847 Joins the Communist League Commissioned to write a party manifesto Marx and Engels joined the Communist League, an international workers' organization, in 1847. At its Second Congress in London that November, the League commissioned the two men to draft a comprehensive statement of its aims and beliefs, which would become "The Communist Manifesto," published the following year.
1848 The Communist Manifesto Published Landmark pamphlet with Engels Published in London in February 1848, "The Communist Manifesto" opened with the declaration that "a spectre is haunting Europe—the spectre of communism" and famously closed with the call "Workers of the world, unite!" The pamphlet outlined the theory of class struggle, critiqued capitalism's contradictions, and called for the proletariat to overthrow bourgeois society. It became one of the most influential political documents in world history, translated into virtually every major language.
1848 – 1849 Revolutions of 1848 and Neue Rheinische Zeitung Political activism during the Springtime of Nations As revolutions swept Europe in 1848, Marx returned to Cologne and founded the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, a radical newspaper supporting democratic and working-class causes during the German revolution. The paper was suppressed by Prussian authorities in May 1849, and Marx was expelled from Prussia, forcing him first back to Paris and then permanently to London later that year.
1849 Settles in London Beginning of permanent exile In August 1849, Marx settled permanently in London, where he would live for the rest of his life as a stateless political exile. The family endured severe poverty in these early years, relying heavily on financial support from Engels, who worked in his family's textile business in Manchester to fund Marx's research and writing.
1852 – 1862 Correspondent for the New-York Tribune Decade as a working journalist From 1852 to 1862, Marx worked as a European correspondent for the New-York Tribune, one of the most widely read American newspapers of the era. Writing on topics ranging from British colonialism in India to the American Civil War, this journalism provided crucial income for his impoverished household while sharpening his analysis of global capitalism and imperialism.
1852 The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon Analysis of the 1851 coup Marx published "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon" in 1852, a sharp political analysis of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte's coup d'etat of December 1851. The essay introduced enduring concepts such as history repeating "first as tragedy, then as farce" and demonstrated Marx's skill at applying historical materialist analysis to contemporary events.
1857 – 1858 Grundrisse Draft notebooks for Das Kapital Between 1857 and 1858, amid a global financial crisis that Marx believed might herald capitalism's collapse, he composed a massive set of working notebooks now known as the "Grundrisse" (Outlines). Unpublished until the 20th century, these manuscripts contain the conceptual scaffolding for "Das Kapital" and reveal the breadth of Marx's economic thinking, including reflections on automation and machinery.
1859 A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy Sketches the base-superstructure model Published in 1859, this work contains Marx's famous and concise statement of historical materialism in its preface, describing how the economic base of society (the mode of production) conditions the political, legal, and ideological superstructure. It served as a theoretical prelude to "Das Kapital," which Marx had begun drafting in earnest.
1864 International Workingmen's Association Founded Leadership of the "First International" Marx was a founding member and leading intellectual force of the International Workingmen's Association, later known as the First International, established in London in September 1864. He drafted its inaugural address and rules, using the organization to unite European labor and socialist movements, though it was ultimately riven by ideological conflict, notably with anarchist Mikhail Bakunin.
1867 Das Kapital, Volume I Published Marx's magnum opus on capitalism The first volume of "Das Kapital: A Critique of Political Economy" was published in Hamburg in September 1867, the only volume completed and published during Marx's lifetime. It presented his labor theory of value, the concept of surplus value, and a systematic analysis of the capitalist mode of production, exploitation, and the tendency toward crisis. The book became the theoretical cornerstone of Marxist economics and socialist movements worldwide.
1871 The Civil War in France Response to the Paris Commune Following the brief and bloody Paris Commune of 1871, Marx wrote "The Civil War in France" for the International Workingmen's Association, defending the Commune as a model of proletarian self-governance despite its defeat. The pamphlet enhanced Marx's notoriety across Europe as the intellectual figurehead of international revolutionary socialism.
1875 Critique of the Gotha Programme Critique of German socialist unity platform In 1875, Marx wrote a private critique of the draft programme for the unification of German socialist parties at Gotha, objecting to its concessions to Lassallean socialism. The critique, published posthumously, contains Marx's famous formulation "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs," and his distinction between lower and higher phases of communist society.
1881 Death of Jenny Marx Loss of his wife and collaborator Jenny Marx died on December 2, 1881, after decades of shared political struggle, exile, and poverty with her husband. Her death was a profound personal blow to Marx, whose own health had already begun to decline, and he never fully recovered from the loss in the final years of his life.
1883 Karl Marx dies in London Died at his desk, still working on Das Kapital Karl Marx died on March 14, 1883, in London at the age of 64, reportedly found by his housekeeper slumped in his armchair, having continued to work on the unfinished later volumes of "Das Kapital" until close to the end. He was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London. Only a handful of people attended the funeral, but Engels' graveside eulogy declared that Marx had been, above all, "a revolutionist" whose ideas would outlive him.
1885 Das Kapital, Volume II Published Edited posthumously by Engels Friedrich Engels compiled and published the second volume of "Das Kapital" in 1885 from Marx's extensive unfinished manuscripts and notes, focusing on the circulation of capital. Engels' painstaking editorial work over more than a decade ensured that Marx's incomplete economic project reached a coherent and lasting published form.
1894 Das Kapital, Volume III Published Completion of the trilogy by Engels The third and final volume of "Das Kapital," dealing with the overall process of capitalist production including the tendency of the rate of profit to fall, was published by Engels in 1894, eleven years after Marx's death. Together the three volumes constitute the most comprehensive theoretical critique of capitalism produced in the 19th century.
1917 Russian Revolution Invokes Marxism Marxist theory put into revolutionary practice The Bolshevik-led Russian Revolution of October 1917, guided by Vladimir Lenin's adaptation of Marxist theory, established the world's first self-declared Marxist state and marked the beginning of Marxism-Leninism as a global political force. The revolution demonstrated the enormous 20th-century impact of Marx's ideas, decades after his death, reshaping global geopolitics for the rest of the century.
1949 Founding of the People's Republic of China Marxism adapted under Mao Zedong The proclamation of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, under Mao Zedong, extended Marxist-inspired revolutionary politics to the world's most populous nation, adapting Marx's theories to a largely agrarian society through Mao Zedong Thought. This cemented Marxist ideology as a central force in 20th-century world history well beyond its European origins.
