Pythagoras Timeline

Pythagoras 29

570 BC Birth of Pythagoras on Samos Born to Mnesarchus, a gem-engraver, on the Aegean island of Samos Pythagoras was born around 570 BC on the island of Samos, off the coast of Ionia, the son of a gem-engraver named Mnesarchus. Ancient biographers, writing centuries later, embellished his birth with legends of divine parentage and prophetic omens from the Delphic oracle. As a young man he showed unusual intellectual promise and was said to have been instructed by priests and sages during travels arranged by his father, a merchant with wide-ranging contacts. Samos itself was a wealthy maritime power at the time, giving the young Pythagoras access to the currents of Ionian natural philosophy pioneered by Thales and Anaximander.
555 BC – 550 BC Mentorship under Pherecydes of Syros Early philosophical education under Pherecydes, Thales, and Anaximander In his youth Pythagoras is said to have studied under Pherecydes of Syros, an early cosmologist credited with teaching the doctrine of the soul's immortality. Ancient sources also connect him with Thales of Miletus, who reportedly urged him to travel to Egypt to study geometry and astronomy with the priests there, and with Thales's pupil Anaximander, whose cosmological models Pythagoras would have encountered directly. These formative influences exposed Pythagoras to the emerging Ionian tradition of rational inquiry into nature, which he later fused with older mystical and religious currents from the Near East. The blend of empirical curiosity and mysticism that resulted became a hallmark of the Pythagorean school.
547 BC – 525 BC Travels to Egypt Extended study with Egyptian priests in geometry, astronomy, and religious ritual Following the counsel of his early teachers, Pythagoras journeyed to Egypt, where ancient biographers such as Iamblichus claim he spent over twenty years studying with the priesthood at centers including Memphis and Diospolis. There he is said to have been initiated into Egyptian religious mysteries after proving his worthiness through demanding trials, and to have absorbed Egyptian geometric knowledge used in surveying and temple construction. The Egyptian priesthood's traditions of secrecy, ritual purity, and hierarchical initiation appear to have directly inspired the organizational structure Pythagoras later imposed on his own school at Croton. Modern historians treat the length and precise content of this sojourn with caution, since the fullest accounts postdate Pythagoras by nearly a thousand years.
525 BC – 520 BC Captivity in Babylon Taken to Babylon following the Persian conquest of Egypt in 525 BC When the Persian king Cambyses II conquered Egypt in 525 BC, Pythagoras was reportedly taken captive and transported to Babylon along with Egyptian priests. There he is said to have studied with Chaldean priests and Magi, gaining access to Babylonian mathematics and astronomy, including sexagesimal computation and long-recorded astronomical observations far exceeding anything available in Greece. This exposure to Mesopotamian numerical and astronomical traditions likely contributed to the arithmetic sophistication of later Pythagorean thought. As with the Egyptian sojourn, the ancient sources describing this episode are late and highly legendary, blending genuine cultural transmission with hagiographic invention.
520 BC – 518 BC Return to Samos under Polycrates Brief return home amid the tyranny of Polycrates before departing for Italy Around 520 BC Pythagoras returned to Samos, then ruled by the tyrant Polycrates, who had built the island into a formidable naval power. Accounts differ on Pythagoras's relationship with the tyrant: some describe him teaching openly in a specially built school, others say he found the political climate of tyranny incompatible with his philosophical aims. Dissatisfied with conditions on Samos and seeking a freer environment for his teaching, Pythagoras resolved to emigrate westward to the Greek colonies of southern Italy. This decision would prove decisive, placing him at Croton, the city where his philosophical and religious movement would take lasting shape.
518 BC – 495 BC "All is Number" Doctrine The foundational Pythagorean belief that numerical relationships underlie all reality The Pythagoreans held that number was the fundamental principle of the cosmos, believing that numerical ratios and relationships explained everything from musical harmony to the structure of the heavens. This conviction elevated arithmetic and geometry from practical tools to objects of near-religious veneration, since understanding number was understood as a path to understanding the divine order of the universe. The doctrine encouraged the classification of numbers into types, such as odd and even, perfect and figurate numbers, laying groundwork for later Greek number theory. Aristotle later summarized and critiqued this view in the Metaphysics, treating it as the defining feature that distinguished Pythagorean philosophy from other pre-Socratic schools.
518 BC – 500 BC Communal Rule and Secrecy of the Brotherhood Strict codes of silence, shared property, and ritual dietary restrictions Life within the Pythagorean brotherhood was governed by a strict communal code: members held property in common, observed vows of silence, and followed a set of ritual precepts known as akousmata, cryptic maxims covering everything from diet to daily conduct. Many members reportedly abstained from meat and beans, practices tied to Pythagorean beliefs about the transmigration of souls and ritual purity. The group's insistence on secrecy meant discoveries in mathematics and natural philosophy were treated as guarded communal property rather than individual achievements, a practice that later caused disputes when members such as Hippasus were said to have revealed closely held secrets. This culture of discipline and secrecy shaped the brotherhood's reputation as much as its actual intellectual output.
518 BC – 495 BC Doctrine of Metempsychosis Belief in the transmigration and reincarnation of the immortal soul Central to Pythagorean religious teaching was the doctrine of metempsychosis, the belief that the soul is immortal and passes through a cycle of reincarnations across human and animal bodies. Pythagoras reportedly claimed personal memories of previous lives, including one as the Trojan warrior Euphorbus, a claim cited by both admirers and skeptics such as Xenophanes. This belief underpinned Pythagorean ethical practices, including vegetarianism and reverence for animal life, since any creature might house a human soul in transmigration. The doctrine also influenced Plato, who incorporated similar ideas of the soul's reincarnation into dialogues such as the Phaedo and the Republic.
518 BC Emigration to Croton Settlement in the prosperous Greek colony of Croton in Magna Graecia Around 518 BC Pythagoras settled in Croton, a flourishing Achaean Greek colony on the Italian coast known for its medical school and athletic prowess. He quickly gained a following among the city's elite, reportedly winning over its leading citizens with public lectures on ethics and the immortality of the soul. Croton's stability and receptiveness to a charismatic teacher made it fertile ground for Pythagoras to establish a permanent community devoted to his teachings. The city would remain the center of Pythagorean activity for the rest of his life and for a generation after his death.
518 BC – 510 BC Founding of the Pythagorean School Establishment of a communal brotherhood devoted to philosophy, mathematics, and ritual purity At Croton, Pythagoras founded a tightly organized brotherhood that combined the functions of a philosophical school, a religious sect, and a political club. Members, known as mathematikoi and akousmatikoi according to their level of initiation, lived under a shared communal discipline that included dietary restrictions, periods of silence, and rigorous study of arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. Admission required a probationary period of listening before a novice could speak, and the group's discoveries were held in common and often attributed collectively to Pythagoras himself. This institutional model of secrecy and initiation, rare among Greek philosophical circles, gave the school an unusual cohesion and made it a significant, if controversial, political and intellectual force in Croton.
518 BC – 495 BC Harmony of the Spheres The belief that celestial bodies move according to mathematical ratios producing cosmic music Pythagoras and his followers proposed that the sun, moon, and planets each produce a hum or tone determined by their distance and orbital speed, and that these tones combine into a harmonious, though inaudible, cosmic music. This "harmony of the spheres" extended the Pythagorean discovery of numerical ratios in music to the structure of the heavens themselves, suggesting the entire cosmos was organized as a vast musical and mathematical whole. The idea profoundly influenced later astronomical and philosophical thought, appearing in Plato's Republic and shaping the cosmological models of medieval and Renaissance thinkers. It would find its most elaborate scientific expression nearly two thousand years later in the work of Johannes Kepler.
518 BC – 495 BC Pythagorean Musical Tuning Discovery of numerical ratios governing consonant musical intervals Pythagoras is credited with discovering that consonant musical intervals correspond to simple whole-number ratios, observing that a vibrating string stopped at half its length produces an octave, at two-thirds a fifth, and at three-quarters a fourth. This insight, whether arrived at through experiments with a monochord or through observations of blacksmiths' hammers as later legend claimed, established the mathematical basis of musical harmony for the first time in the Western tradition. The resulting system of tuning, known as Pythagorean tuning, built scales from stacked perfect fifths and dominated Western music theory for centuries before being challenged by alternative temperaments. This fusion of mathematics and music became a defining feature of the Pythagorean worldview, linking aesthetic beauty to numerical order.
518 BC – 495 BC The Pythagorean Theorem The celebrated relationship between the sides of a right triangle Tradition credits Pythagoras with proving, or at least popularizing in the Greek world, the theorem that the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Babylonian and Egyptian mathematicians had known specific instances of this relationship for over a thousand years before Pythagoras, but Greek sources credit him with providing a general proof, an achievement of a different order than empirical rule-of-thumb use. No original proof by Pythagoras survives, and many historians suspect the theorem's association with him reflects later Pythagorean tradition rather than a documented individual discovery. Regardless of its precise origin, the theorem became one of the most famous and useful results in the history of mathematics, foundational to geometry, trigonometry, and countless practical applications.
518 BC – 495 BC The Sacred Tetractys A triangular figure of ten points symbolizing cosmic and numerical harmony The tetractys, a triangular arrangement of ten points in four rows of one, two, three, and four, was the Pythagorean brotherhood's most sacred symbol, representing the numbers whose sum, ten, was considered the perfect number. Members reportedly swore oaths by the tetractys, treating it as an emblem of the harmony underlying the cosmos and the ratios that generate musical consonance. The figure encoded the basic musical intervals of the octave, fifth, and fourth as ratios between its rows, linking Pythagorean number mysticism directly to the mathematics of harmony. The tetractys remained a potent symbol in later Neopythagorean and Hermetic traditions, cited as evidence of hidden mathematical order in nature.
518 BC – 495 BC Theano of Croton Philosopher and mathematician, wife and intellectual partner of Pythagoras Theano, often identified as a Croton-born philosopher and mathematician, became Pythagoras's wife and a leading figure within the brotherhood in her own right. Later tradition credits her with writings on mathematics, physics, and ethics, and with helping to lead the school after Pythagoras's death, though the surviving fragments attributed to her are of uncertain authenticity. Her prominence, along with that of other women in the Pythagorean community, was unusual for Greek philosophical circles of the period, which were otherwise overwhelmingly male. She is frequently cited in later antiquity as evidence of the Pythagorean commitment to educating women alongside men within the brotherhood.
510 BC – 490 BC Alcmaeon of Croton Early physician and anatomist associated with the Pythagorean circle Alcmaeon of Croton, active in the early fifth century BC and possibly a younger contemporary of Pythagoras himself, is regarded as one of the earliest Greek investigators of anatomy and physiology, credited with identifying the brain rather than the heart as the seat of thought and sensation. Ancient sources connect him loosely to the Pythagorean circle at Croton, a city already renowned for its medical school, and some fragments attribute Pythagorean-style theories of health as a balance of opposing qualities to his work. His investigations reportedly included the dissection of animals to trace the optic nerve, an early instance of empirical anatomical research within a milieu otherwise associated with number mysticism. Alcmaeon's blending of empirical medical inquiry with philosophical speculation illustrates the diverse intellectual currents flowing through Croton during the Pythagorean era.
510 BC – 508 BC Political Role in Croton Pythagorean brotherhood members come to dominate Croton's governing council Beyond their philosophical and religious activities, the Pythagorean brotherhood gained substantial political influence in Croton, with members reportedly occupying key positions on the city's aristocratic governing council. Pythagoras himself is said to have advised Croton's leaders and to have played a role in the city's military and civic successes, including its decisive victory over the neighboring city of Sybaris. This concentration of political power in the hands of a secretive, exclusive brotherhood eventually provoked resentment among excluded citizens of Croton who felt shut out of civic life. That resentment would ultimately erupt into violent backlash against the Pythagoreans within Pythagoras's own lifetime.
508 BC Burning of the Pythagorean Meeting House A violent attack on the brotherhood's headquarters forces Pythagoras to flee Croton Incited by Cylon's faction, a mob is said to have set fire to the house of Milo of Croton where the Pythagoreans were meeting, killing many members of the brotherhood and effectively destroying its organized presence in the city. Pythagoras himself reportedly escaped the attack and fled to the nearby city of Metapontum, where he would spend his final years. The attack marked the violent end of the Pythagorean brotherhood's dominant political role in Croton, though scattered communities of followers persisted in other cities of Magna Graecia. Ancient sources vary on the exact date of this attack, with some placing a second, later destruction of Pythagorean meeting houses across southern Italy decades after Pythagoras's death.
508 BC Cylon's Conspiracy A rejected aspirant to the brotherhood incites popular opposition to the Pythagoreans According to ancient tradition, a wealthy Crotonian named Cylon, angered after being refused admission to the Pythagorean brotherhood, organized a political faction to oppose the group's growing influence in the city. Cylon exploited popular resentment against the Pythagoreans' secrecy, exclusivity, and disproportionate political power, rallying citizens who felt excluded from the brotherhood's privileges. This conspiracy set in motion a violent confrontation that would shatter the Pythagorean community at Croton and force Pythagoras himself into flight. The episode illustrates the volatile mixture of philosophy, religion, and elite politics that characterized the Pythagorean movement from its earliest years.
495 BC Death of Pythagoras Pythagoras dies in exile at Metapontum around 495 BC Having fled the violence at Croton, Pythagoras spent his last years in Metapontum, another Greek colony in southern Italy, where he died around 495 BC. Ancient accounts of his death are inconsistent and heavily legendary, with some claiming he starved himself to death and others describing him as killed while fleeing his enemies. His tomb at Metapontum was reportedly still shown to visitors centuries later, and Cicero mentions viewing it during his own travels in the region. Despite his death, the philosophical and mathematical movement he founded continued to develop and spread through his surviving disciples across the Greek world.
470 BC Hippasus and the Discovery of Irrational Numbers A crisis in Pythagorean number theory over the incommensurability of the diagonal A later Pythagorean, Hippasus of Metapontum, is credited with discovering that the diagonal of a square is incommensurable with its side, meaning their ratio cannot be expressed as a ratio of whole numbers, a finding now understood as the discovery of irrational numbers such as the square root of two. This result posed a profound crisis for Pythagorean philosophy, which held that all relationships in nature could be expressed through whole-number ratios, undermining the doctrine that "all is number." Legend holds that Hippasus was punished, drowned at sea, or expelled from the brotherhood for revealing this unsettling secret to outsiders. Whatever the truth of these dramatic stories, the discovery of incommensurability marked a genuine turning point in the history of Greek mathematics, forcing later thinkers such as Eudoxus to develop more sophisticated theories of proportion.
470 BC – 385 BC Philolaus of Croton Pythagorean philosopher credited with the first published account of the school's doctrines Philolaus of Croton, active in the mid-to-late fifth century BC, is credited with writing the first Pythagorean treatise made available outside the brotherhood, preserving doctrines on cosmology, number, and the structure of the universe that might otherwise have been lost. His cosmological model placed a central fire at the center of the universe, around which the earth, sun, moon, and planets revolved, an unusual departure from geocentric models that some later historians see as an early step toward non-Earth-centered astronomy. Plato is said to have acquired a copy of Philolaus's book, and its ideas fed directly into the cosmology described in Plato's Timaeus. Philolaus's writings remain among the most important surviving sources for reconstructing authentic early Pythagorean thought, as distinct from later legendary accretions.
428 BC – 347 BC Archytas of Tarentum Mathematician, statesman, and engineer who led the Pythagorean school into the fourth century BC Archytas of Tarentum, a leading Pythagorean of the early fourth century BC, combined mathematical brilliance with practical statesmanship, serving as an elected general of his city seven times while also making original contributions to geometry, mechanics, and music theory. He is credited with an ingenious three-dimensional solution to the problem of doubling the cube, an early triumph of applied geometric reasoning, and with refining the mathematical theory of musical ratios inherited from earlier Pythagoreans. Archytas was also a close friend of Plato, reportedly helping to secure Plato's release when the philosopher was endangered during a visit to Sicily. His work represents the high point of Pythagorean mathematics as an independent tradition before its ideas were absorbed into the broader mainstream of Greek philosophy.
388 BC – 347 BC Influence on Plato and the Academy Pythagorean number theory and cosmology shape Plato's philosophy Plato traveled to southern Italy and Sicily around 388 BC, where he encountered Pythagorean thinkers including Archytas of Tarentum and absorbed doctrines that would deeply shape his own philosophy, including the value placed on mathematics as a path to abstract truth. Pythagorean influence is visible throughout Plato's dialogues, from the geometric cosmology of the Timaeus to the doctrine of the soul's immortality and transmigration explored in the Phaedo and the Republic. Plato reportedly required students at his Academy to have a grounding in geometry, reflecting the Pythagorean conviction that mathematics disciplined the mind for philosophical inquiry. Through Plato, Pythagorean number mysticism and mathematical idealism entered the mainstream of Western philosophy, far outliving the brotherhood that first developed them.
300 BC Influence on Euclid's Elements Pythagorean mathematics absorbed into the foundational text of Greek geometry When Euclid compiled the Elements around 300 BC, he drew extensively on results developed by the Pythagorean school, including the theorem on right triangles that bears Pythagoras's name, presented in Book I as one of the work's most celebrated propositions. Euclid's treatment of proportion theory in Book V, developed to handle the problem of incommensurable magnitudes first exposed by the Pythagorean discovery of irrational numbers, reflects the lasting impact of the crisis triggered within the school. Much of Euclidean number theory in Books VII through IX, including properties of prime numbers and perfect numbers, likewise has roots in Pythagorean number classification. Through Euclid's enormously influential synthesis, Pythagorean mathematical results became permanently embedded in the standard curriculum of geometry for the next two thousand years.
100 BC – 1 BC Neopythagoreanism A philosophical and religious revival of Pythagorean doctrine in the late Hellenistic era Beginning in the first century BC, a revival movement known as Neopythagoreanism emerged in the eastern Mediterranean, reviving and elaborating Pythagorean number mysticism, asceticism, and belief in the soul's transmigration within a broader Hellenistic religious and philosophical context. Neopythagorean writers produced numerous treatises falsely attributed to Pythagoras and his early followers, seeking to lend ancient authority to their own syntheses of Pythagorean, Platonic, and Near Eastern ideas. The movement produced influential figures such as Apollonius of Tyana, a wandering sage credited with miracles and ascetic wisdom in the mold of the legendary Pythagoras. Neopythagoreanism fed directly into later Neoplatonism and helped preserve and transmit Pythagorean ideas into late antiquity and beyond.
1619 Kepler's Harmony of the World Johannes Kepler revives Pythagorean cosmic harmony in his 1619 treatise Harmonices Mundi In 1619 the astronomer Johannes Kepler published Harmonices Mundi, a treatise explicitly invoking the ancient Pythagorean idea that the motions of the planets are governed by musical and mathematical harmony. Kepler calculated the angular velocities of the planets as seen from the sun and found that their ratios approximated musical intervals, a modern mathematical elaboration of the old "harmony of the spheres" doctrine. Buried within this speculative work was Kepler's third law of planetary motion, relating a planet's orbital period to its distance from the sun, one of the foundational results of modern celestial mechanics. Kepler's explicit engagement with Pythagorean cosmology shows the surprising continuity between ancient number mysticism and the emergence of modern mathematical astronomy.
1700 – 1900 Influence on Western Esotericism Pythagorean number symbolism shapes Freemasonry and later occult traditions Pythagorean number symbolism, particularly the tetractys and the belief in hidden numerical harmonies underlying nature, was absorbed into a range of later Western esoteric traditions, including Renaissance Hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, and Freemasonry. Masonic ritual and symbolism drew explicitly on Pythagorean geometric imagery, including the right-triangle proof of the Pythagorean theorem, sometimes called the "47th proposition of Euclid" in Masonic texts. Renaissance thinkers such as Marsilio Ficino and later figures in the occult revival treated Pythagoras as a foundational sage figure, a source of ancient wisdom transmitted secretly across centuries. This esoteric afterlife, distinct from Pythagoras's genuine mathematical legacy, illustrates how thoroughly his name became attached to ideas of hidden, sacred numerical knowledge in the Western imagination.
1900 – 2026 Enduring Legacy in Mathematics Education The Pythagorean theorem remains one of the most widely taught results in mathematics More than two and a half thousand years after Pythagoras's death, the theorem bearing his name remains a cornerstone of mathematics education worldwide, typically among the first nontrivial geometric proofs students encounter. Hundreds of distinct proofs of the theorem have been catalogued over the centuries, including one attributed to future United States President James Garfield, testifying to its enduring appeal as a subject of mathematical creativity. The theorem's practical applications extend from architecture and navigation to modern fields such as computer graphics and physics, wherever distances must be calculated from perpendicular components. This ubiquity has made "Pythagoras" one of the most widely recognized names in the history of mathematics, far beyond the reach of the historical details of his own life.
