1869Japanese daimyo return their domains to the emperorFeudal lords surrender their lands under Hanseki HokanAs part of the Meiji Restoration, the feudal lords of Japan formally returned their domain registers and populations to Emperor Meiji. The move was a major step in dismantling the han system of feudal domains and centralizing the Japanese state. It paved the way for the fuller abolition of the domains in 1871.
1869Church of Ireland disestablished by Act of ParliamentIrish Church Act ends state status of Anglican church in IrelandThe British Parliament passed the Irish Church Act, ending the Church of Ireland's status as the official state church and separating it from the Church of England. The act responded to long-standing grievances of Ireland's Catholic majority, who had been required to support an Anglican establishment. Disestablishment took effect in 1871.
