• 1869 Church of Ireland disestablished by Act of Parliament Irish Church Act ends state status of Anglican church in Ireland The British Parliament passed the Irish Church Act, ending the Church of Ireland's status as the official state church and separating it from the Church of England. The act responded to long-standing grievances of Ireland's Catholic majority, who had been required to support an Anglican establishment. Disestablishment took effect in 1871.
