The Fifth Sun: Aztec Religion and Cosmology Timeline

The Fifth Sun: Aztec Religion and Cosmology 50

1428 – 1521 Aztec astronomical science -- watching the sky The Aztec astronomical tradition, built on foundations inherited from earlier Mesoamerican cultures (Olmec, Teotihuacan, Maya), achieves a precision of observation that compares favourably with contemporary European astronomy. The Aztec astronomers track: the solar year (with the zenith passage of the sun used as a precise annual calendar marker); Venus (the 584-day synodic cycle tracked to the day over decades); the moon (the 29.5-day lunar month used for some calendrical purposes); the Pleiades (used to determine the New Fire Ceremony timing); and solar and lunar eclipses (predicted using tables derived from long observation series). The alignment of the Templo Mayor (oriented 7.5° south of astronomical east, aligning with the rising sun on the dates of the solar zenith passage -- April 17 and August 25 at the latitude of Tenochtitlan) demonstrates that the building's orientation is astronomically determined. The Casa del Gobernador at Uxmal (Maya, but related tradition) and the "El Caracol" observatory tower at Chichén Itzá are the best-preserved examples of Mesoamerican astronomical observation infrastructure.
1428 – 1521 Centeotl and Chicomecóatl -- the corn gods Centeotl (the corn god, often depicted as a young man with a corn cob emerging from his head) and Chicomecóatl ("Seven Serpent," the corn goddess) are the twin divine representations of maize -- the single most important food crop in the Aztec world, the caloric foundation of the entire civilisation. Maize is not merely food but divine substance: according to one Aztec creation myth, humanity is created from maize dough -- we are literally made of corn. The agricultural cycle of maize (planting, growing, harvest) is mapped onto the religious calendar: specific festivals mark each stage of the agricultural year; specific deities protect specific phases of growth; the harvest festival (Ochpaniztli) involves the sacrifice of a woman who personifies the maize goddess Toci. Chicomecóatl's name ("Seven Serpent") refers to the day sign associated with abundance and subsistence foods. She is depicted holding ears of corn and wearing a paper headdress decorated with corn-flower motifs. The reverence for maize as a living sacred substance -- the daily offering of tortillas and atole to the household god -- makes the corn field simultaneously a farm and a temple.
1428 – 1521 Chalchiuhtlicue -- jade skirt goddess Chalchiuhtlicue ("She of the Jade Skirt") is the Aztec goddess of lakes, streams, rivers, sea and flowing water -- the feminine counterpart of Tlaloc (who governs rain from above) in her role as ruler of water from below. She governs the Fourth Sun in the Five Suns cycle (the sun destroyed by flood) and is simultaneously the destroyer and the preserver -- when the Fourth Sun ends, she weeps for 52 years, and her tears become the waters that cleanse the earth for the Fifth Sun's creation. She is the patron of childbirth (the amniotic waters breaking = the flood goddess's waters released) and of newborns (who are ritually bathed and dedicated to her at birth). The midwife's prayers at birth invoke Chalchiuhtlicue: "Come here, precious necklace, precious feather... you have come from yonder, from where your father and mother dwell." Her iconography -- a turquoise-green skirt, jade ornaments, a headdress of blue-green quetzal feathers and cotton -- represents the cool, clear waters of lakes and springs. She is the gentler, more nurturing face of the Aztec water deities.
1428 – 1521 Cihuateteo -- women warriors of the sky The cihuateteo ("divine women") are the spirits of women who die in childbirth -- a class of supernatural beings who occupy the same privileged afterlife as warriors killed in battle. In Aztec theology, childbirth is a battle: the woman fights to capture the child from the realm of the unborn, and dying in the effort is a warrior's death. The cihuateteo escort the sun in its afternoon journey across the western sky, just as the male warrior dead (quauhteca) escort it in its morning journey across the eastern sky. They are simultaneously honoured (as warriors) and feared (as the returning dead): on the days of the calendar associated with their spirit group (One Deer, One Rain, One Monkey, One House, One Eagle), the cihuateteo descend at crossroads at night and cause illness, madness and the theft of children. Mothers keep their children indoors on these nights. The cihuateteo represent the Aztec theological insight that the most dangerous forces are those that have passed through death and returned -- the power of sacrifice and the danger of the sacred dead.
1428 – 1521 Coatlicue -- the earth mother and death Coatlicue ("Skirt of Serpents") is the earth goddess of the Aztec pantheon -- a deity of earth, fertility, life, death and regeneration whose iconography is among the most terrifying in Mesoamerican art. The famous Coatlicue statue (found in Mexico City in 1790, now in the National Museum of Anthropology) is 2.7 metres high and represents the goddess with a skirt of interlaced serpents, a necklace of severed hands and hearts with a skull pendant, two serpent heads rising from her neck (where her own head has been severed -- she is simultaneously the decapitated one and the one who gives birth from death), and clawed feet for tearing the earth. She is the mother of Huitzilopochtli (born from a ball of feathers in the Coatepec myth), of Coyolxauhqui (the moon) and of the Centzon Huitznahua (the stars). She is simultaneously generative (the earth that produces all life) and destructive (the earth that receives all death) -- the most complete expression of the Aztec theological insight that life and death are not opposites but aspects of the same cosmic process.
1428 – 1521 Copal incense -- the breath of the gods Copal (copalli, the resin of Bursera species trees) is the most important ritual substance in the Aztec religious system -- the incense burned in censers (thymiateria) before every deity image, at every ceremony, in every ritual context from birth to death. The smoke of copal is the "breath" or "nourishment" of the gods (whose stone images are fed with incense as their primary sustenance), the medium through which prayer travels from earth to the divine realm, and a marker of sacred space. The smell of copal is the smell of the sacred. Every temple, every ceremony, every important life event is permeated by the sweet, resinous scent of burning copal. The tribute system delivers enormous quantities of copal to the Triple Alliance: the Codex Mendoza records 800 gourd-loads of copal from one tribute province alone. Copal use in Catholic religious ceremonies -- adopted by the Spanish missionaries who found it useful for indigenous converts already accustomed to incense as a sacred medium -- continues in Mexican Catholic practice today. The smell of copal in a Mexican church or Day of the Dead celebration is a direct sensory survival of the Aztec religious world.
1428 – 1521 Flower and song -- the highest human achievement "In xochitl in cuicatl" ("flower and song") is the Nahuatl metaphor for poetry, truth and the highest human achievement -- an expression that recurs throughout Aztec intellectual discourse as the term for the activity that most fully expresses the human being's participation in the divine. The metaphor's two elements: the flower (xochitl), representing beauty, transience, the physical world at its most perfect; and the song (cuicatl), representing the human voice expressing truth, the non-material aspect of the divine reaching through human creativity. Together they define the zone in which humanity meets the gods -- not in sacrifice (which is obligation) but in art (which is gift). The philosophical tradition that Miguel León-Portilla calls "toltecayotl" (the Toltec tradition of civilised arts) identifies the poet, the painter, the sculptor and the musician as the human beings most fully aligned with the divine. Nezahualcoyotl's poems meditate repeatedly on the paradox of "flower and song" -- that the most divine human activity is also the most fleeting, the most threatened by time.
1428 – 1521 Huitzilopochtli -- the sun as warrior Huitzilopochtli ("Hummingbird of the South") is the supreme deity of the Mexica -- the sun god in his aspect as a warrior, born each dawn from the earth goddess Coatlicue to defeat the forces of night (the moon and stars) and begin his journey across the sky. His birth myth is the most dramatic in the Aztec pantheon: the earth goddess Coatlicue is sweeping the temple at Coatepec when a ball of feathers falls on her and she conceives. Her daughter Coyolxauhqui (the moon) and her 400 sons (the Centzon Huitznahua, the stars) are outraged by their mother's supernatural pregnancy and plan to kill her. As they approach, Huitzilopochtli is born fully armed from the womb -- he kills Coyolxauhqui with his fire-serpent weapon (Xiuhcoatl), dismembers her body and sends it rolling to the foot of the mountain. He routs the 400 stars. Dawn has come. The sun has defeated the night. This myth is enacted at the Templo Mayor at every sacrifice -- the victim's body is the dismembered moon, the heart is the sun, the offering is the dawn.
1428 – 1521 Human sacrifice -- debt, necessity and horror Human sacrifice (nextlahualli, "debt payment") is the most discussed and most misunderstood aspect of Aztec religion. For the Mexica, it is not cruelty but cosmic obligation -- the debt payment for the creation of the world, which the gods funded with their own blood and which humanity must repay in kind. The primary ritual: heart extraction (tetehuitl) -- the victim is held over the sacrificial stone (techcatl) atop the Templo Mayor, the chest opened with an obsidian knife (tecpatl), the heart (yollotl) removed and held up to the sun, then placed in the eagle vessel (cuauhxicalli). The body is rolled down the pyramid steps (reenacting Coyolxauhqui's dismemberment). The victim -- typically a captured warrior -- dies honourably, achieving an afterlife of privilege (accompanying the sun in its journey). The scale is genuinely debated: Spanish colonial sources give figures of tens of thousands annually; modern demographic analysis suggests the true figure for the empire may be in the range of 10,000-20,000 per year -- significant but smaller than traditionally claimed. Both the practice and the debate about its scale are part of Aztec history.
1428 – 1521 Mictlantecuhtli -- lord of the dead Mictlantecuhtli ("Lord of Mictlan") and his consort Mictlancihuatl are the divine rulers of Mictlan, the nine-level underworld destination of those who die ordinary deaths (not in battle, by water or in childbirth). Mictlantecuhtli is depicted as a skeleton or a figure with a skull face, adorned with paper decorations, wearing a collar of eyeballs and an owl headdress. Mictlan is not hell (a place of punishment) but simply the final destination of the dead -- a dark, cold underworld through which the soul travels over four years, passing nine levels of challenge (a vast wind of obsidian knives, a wide river requiring a dog's help to cross, fields of burning wind, etc.) before reaching the final level and dissolving into nothingness. The dissolution is not fearful -- it is completion. Mictlantecuhtli's temple in the Sacred Precinct stands opposite the Temple of Quetzalcoatl -- life and death, sky and underworld, in permanent balance. The modern Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is the most visible survival of the Aztec attitude to death as a natural companion to life rather than its negation.
1428 – 1521 Nahuatl philosophy -- the toltecayotl tradition The intellectual tradition that modern scholars (particularly Miguel León-Portilla, Alfredo López Austin and Amos Funkenstein) identify as "Nahuatl philosophy" is a coherent set of ideas about the nature of reality, human identity and the good life developed by the tlamatinime (Nahuatl philosophers/sages) of the pre-Columbian period. The central questions: Is there any truth and stability in the world? (Toltecayotl addresses this by identifying art, wisdom and the divine as the stable elements in a transient world.) What is a human being? (Composed of body [toltecatl], vital force [tonalli], and the heart-soul [teyolia] -- a three-part anthropology.) How should one live? (The huehuetlahtolli give practical answers; the poetry of Nezahualcoyotl gives philosophical ones.) The tradition is expressed not in systematic prose (which does not exist in the pre-conquest Nahuatl literary system) but in the formal genres of poetry, formal speech, and the pictographic codices. Its recovery by modern scholars, beginning with León-Portilla's "La filosofía náhuatl" (1956), is one of the most significant contributions to the cross-cultural study of philosophy.
1428 – 1521 Omens and portents -- the universe speaks The Aztec universe is saturated with meaning -- every event in the natural world is potentially a message from the divine, requiring interpretation by specialists. The tonalpouhqui (day-sign readers) interpret the omens of birth; the tlaciuhque (astrologers) interpret celestial phenomena; the dreams of rulers are interpreted by specialists at court; unusual natural events (comets, eclipses, earthquakes, abnormal births of animals) all require interpretation. The omen tradition is both a religious practice and a political tool: the "evil omens" described in post-conquest sources as presaging the Spanish conquest (a comet in 1517, a spontaneous fire in Huitzilopochtli's temple, a woman's voice crying through the night, the burning of the Temple of Xiuhtecuhtli by lightning) are almost certainly elaborated in retrospect -- but they reflect a genuine intellectual tradition of reading the natural world as text. Moctezuma's court is described as employing hundreds of specialists in omen interpretation -- evidence of the institutionalised anxiety of a civilisation living in permanent awareness of its potential cosmic failure.
1428 – 1521 Ometeotl -- the supreme duality Ometeotl ("Two-God" or "Lord of Duality") is the supreme deity in the Aztec theological hierarchy -- a self-created, dual-natured being who exists above and beyond the other gods, simultaneously male (Ometecuhtli, Lord of Duality) and female (Omecihuatl, Lady of Duality), residing in Omeyocan (the 13th and highest heaven, the "Place of Duality"). Ometeotl is the origin of all existence -- the source from which all other gods, all creation and all life descend. He/she is simultaneously husband and wife, father and mother, night and day, cold and heat. The concept of Ometeotl is one of the most philosophically sophisticated elements of Aztec theology -- a monotheistic substrate beneath the polytheistic surface, a recognition that all the apparently separate divine forces are aspects of a single underlying duality. The philosopher-scholar Miguel León-Portilla argues that Ometeotl represents an indigenous Nahuatl philosophical tradition of genuine metaphysical depth that deserves to be taken as seriously as Greek or Indian philosophy. This view has influenced modern Nahua studies significantly.
1428 – 1521 Quetzalcoatl -- the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl ("Feathered Serpent" or "Precious Twin") is one of the oldest and most widely venerated deities in Mesoamerica -- a creator god, patron of wind, learning, the calendar, the arts and the priesthood, whose cult is attested from the Preclassic period (c.900 BC). He embodies the union of earth (serpent) and sky (quetzal bird feathers) -- the synthesis of the physical and the spiritual. Unlike Huitzilopochtli (who demands blood), Quetzalcoatl is associated with self-sacrifice rather than human sacrifice -- he bleeds himself, offers his own blood, and teaches humanity to do the same rather than sacrifice others. His historical incarnation -- the priestly ruler Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl of Tula (c.947-999 AD) who is exiled and disappears into the east, promising to return -- creates the legend of the returning god. The year One Reed (Ce Acatl, 1519) is his predicted return year. Whether Cortés consciously exploits this legend or whether the Spanish attribution of it to Moctezuma's decision-making is post-conquest invention remains one of Mesoamerican history's most debated questions.
1428 – 1521 Religious syncretism -- the Guadalupe miracle The apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe to the indigenous convert Juan Diego at the hill of Tepeyac on 9 December 1531 is the founding event of Mexican Catholic religious identity -- and the most significant example of religious syncretism in the Americas. Tepeyac is the location of the shrine of Tonantzin ("Our Mother" -- a Nahuatl epithet for several earth and fertility goddesses, particularly Toci-Cihuacoatl), one of the most important female sacred sites in the Valley of Mexico. The Virgin appears as a mestiza (mixed-race) woman with dark skin and Aztec colouration -- not the European Madonna but an indigenous figure. The apparition's miraculous image (still preserved and venerated at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which receives 12 million pilgrims annually -- the most visited Catholic shrine in the world) uses indigenous pictographic symbols alongside Catholic iconography. Whether the Guadalupe apparition represents a genuine Catholic miracle, a deliberate Franciscan strategy for converting indigenous peoples by adapting their existing religious frameworks, or a spontaneous indigenous-Christian synthesis, it is the most consequential religious event in post-conquest Mexican history.
1428 – 1521 Self-sacrifice and bloodletting -- the constant offering Human sacrifice is the most dramatic offering in the Aztec religious system, but it is not the most frequent. The constant daily offering -- performed by every priest and by many laypeople at regular intervals -- is auto-sacrifice or bloodletting: the drawing of one's own blood with maguey spines, obsidian blades or stingray spines and offering it to the gods. Priests draw blood from their earlobes, calves, tongues and penises at the four daily prayer times. Warriors preparing for battle draw blood from their thighs. The maguey spine is the standard instrument -- bundles of bloodied spines are placed before the deity's image as the physical evidence of the offering. The theological logic: blood is the most intimate offering possible (more valuable than any external gift because it comes from the body of the giver); self-sacrifice demonstrates the giver's willingness to pay the cosmic debt with their own substance. The practice of bloodletting was widespread in Mesoamerica, attested from the Olmec period (c.1500 BC) through the Classic Maya (the blood-drawing rituals of Yaxchilan are among the finest surviving Maya relief art) to the Aztec empire.
1428 – 1521 Teotihuacan -- where the gods created the world The creation of the Fifth Sun at Teotihuacan is the central event of Aztec cosmology -- the moment when two humble gods (Nanahuatzin, the scabrous one, and Tecuciztecatl, the wealthy one) are asked to sacrifice themselves by leaping into a divine fire to become the sun and moon. Tecuciztecatl, proud and wealthy, hesitates four times before the fire and cannot jump. Nanahuatzin, poor and diseased, jumps immediately and becomes the sun. Shamed, Tecuciztecatl leaps after and becomes the moon (originally as bright as the sun, but the gods strike him with a rabbit, dimming him). But the sun will not move -- it hangs motionless in the sky. Only when all the other gods shed their blood as payment does the sun begin to move. This narrative establishes the theological logic of sacrifice: the gods sacrifice themselves to create the world; humanity sacrifices to keep it moving; the debt is permanent and cosmic.
1428 – 1521 Tezcatlipoca -- the smoking mirror Tezcatlipoca ("Smoking Mirror") is one of the most powerful and complex deities in the Aztec pantheon -- the god of the night sky, of sorcery, of conflict, of change, of human destiny and of the unpredictable forces that undermine order. He is both creator and destroyer -- he creates the earth (in one version, using his foot as bait to lure the primordial earth monster from the primordial sea, losing his foot in the process) and disrupts the order that Quetzalcoatl creates. He is the patron of warriors, sorcerers, rulers and the young -- the force of dangerous, transformative power. His "smoking mirror" (an obsidian disc that reflects not the external world but the truth of the soul, revealing crimes and hidden thoughts) is the most feared instrument of divine judgment. His relationship with Quetzalcoatl is one of cosmic rivalry -- they destroy each other's creations in the cycle of the Five Suns. Tezcatlipoca is the deity who tempts Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl with pulque and forces him into sexual transgression, exiling him from Tula and setting the stage for the legend of return.
1428 – 1521 The 18 monthly festivals -- a year of ceremony The 18 months of the Aztec solar year each have their own patron deity and their own festival -- creating a continuous cycle of religious ceremony that structures the entire year. Selected highlights: Atlcahualo (month 1, February-March) -- children are sacrificed to Tlaloc to bring rain; Toxcatl (month 5, May) -- a young man who has lived as the living image of Tezcatlipoca for one year is sacrificed at the festival's peak; Etzalqualiztli (month 6, June) -- priests perform rain-making ceremonies in Lake Texcoco, submerging themselves; Ochpaniztli (month 11, September) -- a woman who has personified the maize goddess Toci is sacrificed at harvest; Panquetzaliztli (month 15, November-December) -- the great festival of Huitzilopochtli, the most important in the calendar, involving mass sacrifice of captive warriors; Izcalli (month 18, January-February) -- the fire god Xiuhtecuhtli is honoured with offerings of tamales and the stretching of children's necks (to make them grow). The continuous cycle of ceremony makes Tenochtitlan a city in permanent ritual activity.
1428 – 1521 The 20 day signs -- the cosmos in names The 20 day signs of the tonalpohualli (260-day ritual calendar) are among the most distinctive elements of Mesoamerican visual culture -- a set of standardised symbols, each associated with a deity, a direction, a colour and a set of character traits, that together form the vocabulary of Aztec divination. The 20 signs: Cipactli (crocodile/earth monster), Ehecatl (wind), Calli (house), Cuetzpallin (lizard), Coatl (serpent), Miquiztli (death's head), Mazatl (deer), Tochtli (rabbit), Atl (water), Itzcuintli (dog), Ozomatli (monkey), Malinalli (grass), Acatl (reed), Ocelotl (jaguar), Cuauhtli (eagle), Cozcacuauhtli (vulture), Ollin (movement/earthquake), Tecpatl (flint knife), Quiahuitl (rain), Xochitl (flower). Each day name is combined with a number from 1 to 13, giving each of the 260 days its unique identity. Children are named for the day sign of their birth; the sign's qualities define their destiny and character. A child born on 1 Crocodile has a completely different destiny from one born on 4 Jaguar. The tonalpouhqui (day-sign reader) mediates between these cosmic assignments and human life choices.
1428 – 1521 The 52-year cycle -- when the world might end The 52-year Calendar Round (xiuhmolpilli, "bound years" or "bundle of years") is the most important time unit in Aztec cosmology -- the period after which the tonalpohualli (260-day calendar) and the xiuhpohualli (365-day calendar) return to the same alignment, completing a full cycle. Every 52 years, on the last day of the xiuhmolpilli, there is genuine existential anxiety: if the sacrifices are not performed correctly, if the gods are not appeased, the world might end -- the Fifth Sun might fail to rise, plunging the world into permanent darkness populated by star demons (tzitzimimeh) who devour humanity. The New Fire Ceremony (Toxiuhmolpilia, "binding of the years") marks the end of each 52-year period: all fires in the empire are extinguished; the people fast; pregnant women are locked up (in danger of becoming monsters); the priests climb the Hill of the Star (Huixachtlan, near modern Iztapalapa) and watch the Pleiades. At midnight, if the Pleiades cross the zenith, the world is saved: a priest drills new fire on the chest of a sacrificial victim and the fire is distributed throughout the empire by relay runners.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec afterlife -- destination by death The Aztec afterlife system, unlike Egyptian, Greek or Christian systems, does not base the destination of the dead on moral conduct but on the manner of death -- a theological position with profound implications for how the Aztecs understand the relationship between the living and the divine. The destinations: Tonatiuh's palace (eastern sky) -- warriors killed in battle and sacrificial victims, the most honoured; western sky -- women who die in childbirth; Tlalocan (Tlaloc's paradise) -- those who die by water, lightning, certain diseases, or are sacrificed to Tlaloc; Omeyocan (highest heaven) -- infants who die before eating solid food (they return to the place of origin before their soul has been fully formed); Mictlan (nine-level underworld) -- everyone else, after a four-year journey. The moral system of the living (living well, maintaining Ma'at, honouring obligations) determines the quality of life on earth rather than the destination after death. The afterlife destinations are not rewards or punishments but cosmological assignments -- where the dead are needed to keep the universe functioning.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec cosmos -- thirteen heavens and nine underworlds The Aztec cosmos is a layered structure of 13 heavens above the earth and 9 underworlds (levels of Mictlan) below -- a vertical architecture of the universe in which different categories of beings inhabit different levels. The 13 heavens: the lowest (tonatiuhichan, sun's house) is where the sun travels during the day; above it are progressively higher levels occupied by the moon and stars, the wind, the rain, the green celestial waters, the black and yellow celestial waters, the divine fire, and finally Omeyocan (13th heaven, place of duality, where Ometeotl resides). The 9 underworld levels: successively more challenging obstacles on the four-year journey to Mictlan -- crossing a wide river, passing through wind of obsidian knives, crossing a red desert, passing through fields of wind that blow obsidian snow, crossing a black water, reaching Mictlan itself. The vertical cosmos is oriented to the horizontal four-directional cosmogram: the 13 heavens and 9 underworlds provide the vertical dimension; the four directions and their associated deities provide the horizontal. Together they create a fully three-dimensional sacred geography.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec gods of death -- the thirteen lords of the day The 13 Lords of the Day (Trecena Lords) are 13 deities who rule the 13 numbers of the tonalpohualli in sequence -- each presiding over all the days that carry their number during the 260-day cycle. They include: Xiuhtecuhtli (fire god, rules day 1); Tlaltecuhtli (earth lord, rules day 2); Chalchiuhtlicue (jade skirt goddess of lakes and streams, rules day 3); Tonatiuh (sun, rules day 4); Tlazolteotl (earth goddess of filth and purification, rules day 5); Mictlantecuhtli (lord of the dead, rules day 6); Centeotl (corn god, rules day 7); Tlaloc (rain, rules day 8); Quetzalcoatl (wind and learning, rules day 9); Tezcatlipoca (night sky and fate, rules day 10); Chalmecatecuhtli (sacrificial god, rules day 11); Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli (Venus as morning star, rules day 12); Citlalicue (Milky Way goddess, rules day 13). Each numbered day is simultaneously governed by its day sign deity and its Lord of the Day -- creating a complex matrix of divine influence that the tonalpouhqui must navigate in performing a divination.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec religious system -- a living philosophy The Aztec religious system, taken as a whole, is not a collection of arbitrary myths and bloody rituals but a coherent philosophical system addressing the fundamental questions of human existence with genuine depth. Its core insights: the universe is dynamic and unstable, requiring constant maintenance through human action; humanity exists in a condition of cosmic debt that can only be discharged through sacrifice; the proper human response to this situation is not despair but "flower and song" -- the beautiful activity of art, poetry, and loving relationship; death is not an enemy but a phase of the cosmic cycle that must be honoured and prepared for; the gods are not all-powerful benefactors but partners in a difficult cosmic enterprise who need human help as much as humans need divine help. These are not primitive superstitions but sophisticated philosophical positions, arrived at through centuries of intellectual reflection on human experience in a world of genuine uncertainty. The destruction of the tradition that generated them is a loss not just for Mexico but for the history of human thought.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec view of death -- not an enemy One of the most striking features of Aztec religious culture, commented upon by Spanish observers with a mixture of horror and respect, is the attitude to death -- not as an enemy to be feared but as a natural companion to life, a necessary phase of the cosmic cycle that must be honoured and prepared for rather than denied. The warrior's aspiration to die in battle (thus becoming a companion of the sun) is the highest life ambition. The sacrifice victim who walks willingly to the techcatl (sacrificial stone) achieves a death more honoured than old age. Children who die as sacrificial victims are sent with the message that they go to Tlaloc's paradise. The four-year journey to Mictlan is undertaken with the help of the buried dog and the grave goods -- a practical preparation for a definite journey, not a fearful unknown. The ritual of the 18 monthly festivals includes regular communion with the dead -- the ancestor spirits return to share food at specific times of year. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is the most visible modern survival of this Aztec theology: death as family member, returned for a visit, to be fed and welcomed.
1428 – 1521 The Day of the Dead -- life's companion returns The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos, celebrated 1-2 November) is the most widely known survival of the Aztec attitude to death -- a syncretic celebration combining the Aztec Miccailhuitontli (feast of the little dead, for children) and Miccailhuitl (feast of the adult dead) with the Catholic All Saints and All Souls Days. The pre-Columbian tradition: the dead return to visit the living at specific times in the Aztec calendar; the living prepare offerings (food, flowers, incense, water, objects the dead loved in life) to welcome them. The modern celebration: the ofrenda (offering table) decorated with cempasúchil (marigold) petals, photographs of the dead, food and drink offerings; the graveyard vigil on the night of 1-2 November when families eat, drink and tell stories alongside the graves of their relatives; the sugar-skull (calavera) confection; and the painted face (la catrina) derived from the 1913 zinc-plate etching by José Guadalupe Posada. The Day of the Dead is a living demonstration of the Aztec proposition that death is not the end of the relationship between the living and the dead but its most honest expression.
1428 – 1521 The Fifth Sun -- Aztec religion and cosmology The religious and cosmological system of the Aztec empire is one of the most intellectually ambitious and theologically sophisticated in the pre-Columbian world -- a system that addresses the nature of the universe, the origins of humanity, the obligations of the living to the dead and the divine, and the ultimate fate of the world with a consistency and rigour that deserves to be taken seriously as philosophy as well as religion. At its centre is the doctrine of the Five Suns: the current world is the fifth and final attempt by the gods to create a stable universe; the four previous worlds were destroyed by catastrophe; the fifth world will end in earthquakes. The sun of the current world (Nahui Ollin, "4 Movement") was created at Teotihuacan when two gods sacrificed themselves by leaping into a fire -- and set in motion only when all the gods shed their blood as payment. Humanity owes the gods the same payment in return: the "debt payment" (nextlahualli) of human sacrifice that keeps the sun moving and the world alive.
1428 – 1521 The Fifth Sun's enduring light The theological system of the Fifth Sun -- with its insight that the universe is unstable, that maintenance requires sacrifice, that beauty is real but transient, and that the proper human response to cosmic uncertainty is "flower and song" -- is not merely a historical curiosity but a living intellectual tradition. Nahuatl is still spoken; Nahuatl poetry is still read; the theological concepts underlying the Day of the Dead (death as companion, not enemy) still shape Mexican culture. The Aztec religious system's fundamental propositions -- that the world requires human effort to sustain, that cosmic debt is real and must be discharged, that beauty and death are not opposites but aspects of a single reality -- resonate with contemporary ecological and philosophical concerns in ways that make the tradition newly relevant. The Fifth Sun will end in earthquakes, according to the cosmology -- an ending that the modern reality of seismic Mexico City (built on a drained lake bed, prone to catastrophic earthquakes as in 1985 and 2017) makes uncomfortably literal. The Fifth Sun's cosmology is still, in a very real sense, the cosmology of the city it created.
1428 – 1521 The Five Suns -- cycles of creation and destruction The doctrine of the Five Suns is the foundational cosmological narrative of Aztec religion -- the belief that the current world is the fifth in a series, each previous world having been destroyed by a different catastrophe. The four previous suns: the First Sun (4 Jaguar/Nahui Ocelotl) -- created by Tezcatlipoca, destroyed when jaguars devoured its inhabitants; the Second Sun (4 Wind/Nahui Ehecatl) -- created by Quetzalcoatl, destroyed by hurricanes; the Third Sun (4 Rain/Nahui Quiahuitl) -- created by Tlaloc, destroyed by a rain of fire; the Fourth Sun (4 Water/Nahui Atl) -- created by Chalchiuhtlicue, destroyed by flood. The Fifth Sun (4 Movement/Nahui Ollin) -- created at Teotihuacan, currently existing, will be destroyed by earthquakes. Each sun lasts a specific number of years (recorded in the Aztec calendar system); the current sun has a finite lifespan that can be extended only by the daily sacrifice of human blood. This cosmology creates the existential urgency that drives the sacrificial system.
1428 – 1521 The Four Directions -- cosmic geography Aztec cosmic geography organises the universe around four cardinal directions (plus above and below), each with its own colour, deity, day sign, year sign, and set of associations that structure everything from the layout of cities to the names of children born on specific days. East (tlapcopa) is red, associated with Xipe Totec, with the dawn and new beginning; West (cihuatlampa, "women's direction") is white, associated with Quetzalcoatl and the cihuateteo (women who died in childbirth); North (mictlampa, "direction of the dead") is black, associated with Tezcatlipoca and death; South (huitztlampa) is blue-green, associated with Huitzilopochtli and the sky. The centre (where the four directions meet) is the fifth direction, associated with fire and the supreme deity Xiuhtecuhtli. This directional cosmology structures: the design of Tenochtitlan (four campan corresponding to the four directions); the organisation of the tonalpohualli (groups of days associated with each direction in sequence); the coding of specific activities (certain directions are auspicious for certain activities on certain days); and the interpretation of dreams, omens and natural phenomena.
1428 – 1521 The New Fire Ceremony -- the world reborn The New Fire Ceremony (Toxiuhmolpilia, "binding of the years") performed at the end of each 52-year Calendar Round is the most important and most existentially charged ceremony in the Aztec ritual calendar. The last New Fire Ceremony before the Spanish conquest is performed in 1507 (2 Reed year, 11 years before Cortés's arrival). The ceremony: on the last day of the 52-year cycle, all fires in Tenochtitlan and throughout the empire are extinguished at sunset; people fast, remain indoors; pregnant women are locked up and masked with maguey-leaf masks (to prevent them from becoming star demons if the world ends). At midnight, priests and nobles process from Tenochtitlan to the Hill of the Star (Huixachtlan). The priests watch the Pleiades. If they cross the zenith at midnight -- confirming the world will continue -- a priest drills new fire on the chest of the most perfectly formed sacrificial victim. The new fire is carried by relay runners to the Templo Mayor; from there it is distributed throughout the city and empire. The people emerge, weep with joy, slash their children's ears to feed the new fire with blood, and celebrate. The world is saved for another 52 years.
1428 – 1521 The Popol Vuh and the Hero Twins -- shared traditions The Popol Vuh ("Book of the Community"), the K'iche' Maya creation narrative compiled c.1554-1558 (after the Spanish conquest, in alphabetic Quiché, from oral tradition), shares significant narrative and theological elements with Aztec religion -- demonstrating the common substratum of Mesoamerican religious thought that underlies the cultural differences between the Valley of Mexico and the Maya lowlands. The Popol Vuh's Hero Twins (Hunahpu and Xbalanque) who defeat the lords of the underworld (Xibalba) through cleverness, die and are resurrected, and become the sun and the moon, parallel the Aztec creation narratives in their basic structure (divine death and resurrection creating the celestial bodies). The maize god (Hun Hunahpu in the Popol Vuh; Centeotl-Cinteotl in the Aztec system) appears in both traditions as the deity from whose body humanity is created. The ballgame appears in both traditions as a cosmic ritual with life-and-death stakes. The shared elements represent a Mesoamerican religious koine -- a common theological vocabulary spoken in different dialects across the region.
1428 – 1521 The Spanish missionaries -- recording to destroy and preserve The Spanish Franciscan, Dominican and Augustinian missionaries who arrive in Mexico after 1521 are simultaneously the destroyers and the preservers of Aztec religious culture. The destruction: systematic burning of codices (Bishop Zumárraga's 1529 burning at Texcoco is the most notorious, but the process continues for decades); forced conversion and suppression of traditional ceremonies; execution of practicing priests; destruction of temple statues and replacement with Christian images. The preservation: the same friars (particularly Sahagún, Motolinía, Durán and others) interview surviving informants, record Nahuatl texts in alphabetic script, compile dictionaries and grammars, and document rituals, beliefs and practices in encyclopaedic works -- specifically because they need to understand what they are combating. The paradox is that our most detailed knowledge of Aztec religion comes from Spanish missionaries recording it in order to suppress it. Without Sahagún's Florentine Codex, compiled between 1545 and 1590, our knowledge of Aztec culture would be dramatically poorer.
1428 – 1521 The Sunstone -- reading the cosmos The Sunstone (Piedra del Sol), a basalt disc 3.6 metres in diameter and 25 tonnes weight, is the most famous monument of Aztec civilisation -- found in the Zócalo of Mexico City in December 1790 and now the centrepiece of the National Museum of Anthropology. Despite the popular name "Aztec Calendar Stone," it is not a calendar but a cosmogram -- a schematic representation of the Aztec cosmos and the history of the Five Suns. The iconographic programme, from centre outward: the face of Tonatiuh (sun god) with his obsidian tongue, flanked by the day sign 4 Movement (the current sun); the four squares surrounding the centre face, each containing the day sign of a previous sun (4 Jaguar, 4 Wind, 4 Rain, 4 Water); the ring of 20 day signs; a ring of jade and turquoise symbols (the rays of the sun); a ring of fire; and the outer frame formed by two fire serpents (Xiuhcoatl) whose tails meet at the top, framing the entire disc. The stone is dedicated to Tonatiuh and is dated 13 Acatl (c.1479, in the reign of Axayacatl) by the glyphs at the top. It was originally painted in brilliant colours.
1428 – 1521 The destruction of the sacred -- what was lost The systematic destruction of Aztec religious culture by the Spanish -- the burning of codices, the demolition of temples, the suppression of ceremonies, the execution of priests, the forced conversion of the population -- constitutes one of the greatest cultural losses in human history. What was destroyed: the complete set of pre-conquest codices (only approximately 15 survive of what may have been thousands); the oral traditions of the calmecac (which required specialised education to transmit and could not survive the death of the trained practitioners); the material culture of the temple precincts (virtually every pre-conquest religious object in Tenochtitlan is destroyed or melted down); the living knowledge of the tonalpohualli diviners, the specialist astronomical observers, and the performance traditions of the monthly festivals. What survives: the fragments preserved in Sahagún's Florentine Codex and other missionary compilations; the pictographic traditions in the surviving codices; the oral traditions that persist in rural communities; the material culture that ended up in European collections (the feather headdress in Vienna, the turquoise mosaic in the British Museum). The loss is irretrievable.
1428 – 1521 The huehuetlahtolli -- wisdom in words The huehuetlahtolli ("ancient discourses" or "words of the elders") are a body of formal speeches delivered at specific life occasions -- birth, naming, coming of age, marriage, death, entering office, going to war -- that constitute the highest expression of Aztec wisdom literature. They are not spontaneous utterances but memorised formal addresses, passed down through generations in the calmecac and transmitted by family elders at the appropriate moments. Their content: advice for living well, maintaining proper relationships with the gods and fellow humans, fulfilling one's obligations, cultivating the virtues of self-control, humility and diligence. The huehuetlahtolli are simultaneously practical (giving advice on specific situations) and philosophical (meditating on the nature of the good life, the fragility of human existence, and the obligations that arise from living in a cosmos sustained by divine sacrifice). Sahagún's Florentine Codex preserves a substantial collection; they are among the finest achievements of pre-Columbian verbal art and give us direct access to Aztec moral philosophy.
1428 – 1521 The nahualli -- animal spirit companions The nahualli (from Nahuatl: nauhtli, "companion/co-essence/animal counterpart") is the animal spirit double that every human being possesses -- a specific animal determined by the day sign of the person's birth, whose fate is linked to the person's fate throughout life. The nahualli is not a totem or a symbol but a literal double: if the nahualli animal dies, the person is seriously weakened or dies. Powerful individuals (rulers, priests, sorcerers) can sometimes take the form of their nahualli, becoming the animal for a period -- a form of shamanic transformation. The sorcerer who can transform into his nahualli is called a nahualli himself (the term is used for both the animal double and the sorcerer who can become it). Tezcatlipoca's nahualli is the jaguar; Quetzalcoatl's is the quetzal bird; Huitzilopochtli's is the hummingbird. The nahualli concept connects the Aztec religious system to the broader Mesoamerican shamanic tradition and to the concept of transformative power as the most fundamental expression of the divine.
1428 – 1521 The priesthood -- servants of the cosmic order The Aztec priesthood (teopixque, "god-keepers") is one of the most thoroughly documented religious institutions in the pre-Columbian Americas -- a professional class numbering in the thousands, organised in a hierarchy attached to specific deities and temples, trained in the calmecac from childhood and living under strict rules of ritual purity. The daily routine of a priest: rise before dawn for the first of five daily prayers (at midnight, dawn, noon, dusk and before sleeping); draw blood from the ears, calves or tongue with maguey spines (self-sacrifice is the continuous offering of the priesthood); burn copal incense before the deity's image; maintain the sacred fire; perform the ritual bathing and dressing of the deity's cult image. Priests are distinguished by their long hair (never cut, matted with dried blood from self-sacrifice), black body paint, and the distinctive white or black garments of their rank. They do not marry (full-time priests are celibate); they fast regularly; they are exempt from tribute and military service but participate in the capture of sacrificial victims in their own ritual combat.
1428 – 1521 The sacred ball game -- tlachtli revisited The Mesoamerican ballgame (Nahuatl: tlachtli or ulamatztli), played throughout the region for over 3,500 years before the Aztec empire, is at once sport, ritual and cosmic metaphor. In its Aztec incarnation, the game's theological dimension is primary: the rubber ball (olli, ullamaliztli) represents the sun; the court (tlachco) represents the sky; the game enacts the sun's daily journey. The vertical rings set in the court walls are goals -- but more than goals, they are the paths through which the ball/sun passes as it crosses the horizon at dawn and dusk. In the most sacred matches, the outcome has cosmic significance -- the winners (or losers, depending on the source) are sacrificed. At Tenochtitlan's sacred ballcourt (within the Sacred Precinct), the most important matches are those associated with the festivals of Huitzilopochtli and Tezcatlipoca. The game's equipment: the rubber ball (3-4kg, made from vulcanised Castilla elastica latex), the protective hip guards (yopitzontli), arm guards, and knee pads -- the only sport in the pre-Columbian world requiring specialised protective equipment.
1428 – 1521 The sacred codices -- surviving windows The approximately 15 pre-Columbian Mesoamerican codices that survive (preserved in European libraries -- the Vatican Library, the Bodleian at Oxford, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Vienna's Museum für Völkerkunde, and others) are the most direct surviving expressions of Aztec intellectual and religious culture. The most important: the Codex Borgia (divination and ritual, possibly from Tlaxcala or Cholula -- the finest pre-Columbian painted manuscript); the Codex Mendoza (Aztec history, tribute lists and daily life, compiled for Viceroy Mendoza c.1541); the Codex Borbonicus (ritual calendar and New Fire Ceremony); the Tonalamatl Aubin (260-day calendar); the Codex Cospi (ritual calendar); the Codex Vindobonensis and Codex Nuttall (Mixtec genealogies). Each codex is a primary source for specific aspects of Aztec and Mesoamerican culture; collectively they preserve a fragment of the knowledge system that Zumárraga's bonfires destroyed. Their study has occupied generations of scholars and continues to yield new insights.
1428 – 1521 The tlazolteotl -- filth, purification and confession Tlazolteotl ("Goddess of Filth" or "Goddess of Purification") is one of the most complex deities in the Aztec pantheon -- a goddess of sexual transgression, moral impurity, and their purification. She both causes and cures sexual excess; she both directs the tonalpohualli day signs that lead people to sexual sin and provides the mechanism for their purification. Her most distinctive function: the confession (tlaolqualiztli, "eating filth"), in which a person confesses their sexual transgressions to the priest of Tlazolteotl (typically once in a lifetime, on the day 1 Flower of the tonalpohualli). The priest hears the confession and prescribes penance; Tlazolteotl "eats" the sin, purifying the confessant. This practice -- confession, absolution, penance -- is so similar to Catholic confession that it profoundly confuses the early Spanish missionaries, who cannot decide whether it is a satanic imitation of the sacrament or evidence of an indigenous tradition of grace. Tlazolteotl is also associated with weaving (cotton thread = the web of fate), with the moon, with midwifery and with the temazcal steam bath.
1428 – 1521 The tonalpohualli -- the 260-day ritual calendar The tonalpohualli ("count of days," 260-day ritual calendar) is the most distinctive element of Mesoamerican calendrical science -- a divinatory calendar used for naming children, scheduling rituals, predicting the outcomes of undertakings and determining the destiny of individuals from birth. It consists of 20 day signs (each associated with a deity) combined with 13 numbers, cycling through 260 unique day combinations before repeating. The 260-day period corresponds to the human gestation period (approximately nine 29-day lunar months), the growing season in highland Mexico, and the period between the zenith passage of the sun at the latitude of central Mexico -- making it simultaneously practical, astronomical and symbolic. Each day combination has a specific set of associations (favourable, unfavourable, specific deities, specific activities) that the tonalpouhqui (day-sign reader, diviner) interprets for clients. The tonalpohualli governs the scheduling of every important activity in Aztec life from birth to death -- when to plant, when to travel, when to marry, when to go to war.
1428 – 1521 The xiuhpohualli -- the 365-day solar year The xiuhpohualli ("count of years," 365-day solar year) is the agricultural calendar of Aztec civilisation -- 18 months of 20 days each, plus 5 "empty days" (nemontemi) at the end of the year considered particularly dangerous and inauspicious. Each of the 18 months has its own name, its own patron deity or deities, and its own associated festivals. The agricultural cycle is embedded in the ritual calendar: the month Atlcahualo (water is left/stopped, February-March) begins the dry season agricultural preparation; Toxcatl (drought, May) celebrates Tezcatlipoca; Etzalqualiztli (eating bean stew, June) honours Tlaloc with rain-making ceremonies; Ochpaniztli (sweeping, September) marks the harvest. The 18-month calendar is not quite 365.25 days (it lacks the leap year correction) -- it gradually falls out of sync with the actual solar year, which the Aztec astronomers are aware of but do not correct in the official calendar. The five nemontemi days are days of bad luck when no important activity is undertaken.
1428 – 1521 Tlaloc -- the rain that gives and destroys Tlaloc is one of the oldest deities in Mesoamerica -- a rain and water god worshipped at Teotihuacan and throughout the region for at least 2,000 years before the Aztec empire. He is simultaneously the provider of life-giving rain and the source of destructive floods, lightning and hailstorms. His distinctive iconography (goggle eyes formed by intertwined serpents, fanged mouth dripping water, blue-green colouration) is immediately recognisable across Mesoamerican cultures. His paradise (Tlalocan) is the destination of those who die by drowning, lightning, water-related illness or sacrificial drowning -- a lush, abundant world of perpetual spring and unlimited food. His sacrificial victims in Tenochtitlan are primarily children, whose tears are believed to invoke rain -- a requirement particularly horrifying to the Spanish. The Templo Mayor's northern shrine (dedicated to Tlaloc) is paired with the southern shrine (Huitzilopochtli) -- rain and sun being the two fundamental requirements of agricultural life, their co-dedication at the city's sacred centre reflects the agricultural foundation of Aztec civilisation.
1428 – 1521 Toci -- the grandmother and midwife Toci ("Our Grandmother") is one of the oldest and most widely venerated female deities in the Aztec world -- a complex goddess combining the aspects of earth, midwifery, medicine, weaving, war, healing and the sweat bath. She is the "Mother of the Gods" (Teteo Innan) -- the primal earth goddess from whom all divine life emerges. Her festival (Ochpaniztli, "sweeping," month 11, September-October) is the harvest festival of the maize goddess -- a woman who personifies Toci is selected, dressed in the goddess's regalia and sacrificed at the festival's peak; her skin is then worn by a priest who embodies the goddess. Toci is also the patron of midwives (ticitl) -- the women who guide birth, name the newborn and perform the rituals of entry into life. Her patronage of the temazcal (sweat bath) connects her to healing and purification. The breadth of Toci's attributes -- earth, birth, medicine, war, weaving, harvest -- reflects her status as the primordial mother who encompasses the full range of human experience from birth to death.
1428 – 1521 Tonatiuh -- the sun god Tonatiuh ("He Who Goes Forth Shining") is the specific deity of the current sun -- the Fifth Sun in its aspect as the daily solar disc making its journey across the sky. He is depicted as a young, youthful warrior, his face red (the colour of the rising sun) or golden yellow, with his tongue extended to receive the blood sacrifice that fuels his journey. The famous Sunstone (the "Aztec Calendar Stone") has Tonatiuh's face at its centre -- the tongue emerging with the flint knife (tecpatl) embedded in it, surrounded by the symbols of the four previous suns and the 20 day signs. Tonatiuh requires the blood of sacrificed warriors (cuauhteca, "eagle people") to complete his daily journey -- warriors who die in battle or on the sacrificial stone become his companions in the eastern sky, escorting him in his dawn journey until midday. Women who die in childbirth escort him from midday to sunset in the western sky. The sun's journey is not automatic -- it requires the constant support of the warrior dead and the living sacrifice of their successors.
1428 – 1521 Venus -- the warrior star Venus, the most visible planet in the sky, is one of the most important celestial bodies in Aztec astronomy and theology -- identified with Quetzalcoatl in his aspect as Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli ("Lord of the Dawn House"), the morning star that precedes the sun and, as the evening star, follows it into the underworld. The Aztec Venus cycle (the 584-day synodic period of Venus, closely tracked by Aztec astronomers) is the most precisely documented astronomical cycle in their calendar system -- the Dresden Codex (a Maya astronomical manuscript) preserves Venus tables of extraordinary accuracy, and similar tables presumably existed in Aztec codices. The heliacal rising of Venus (its first appearance as morning star after a period of invisibility) is considered dangerous -- the morning star "shoots" its rays at specific categories of people on specific day signs, causing illness. Venus's appearance as a warrior returning from the underworld connects to the myth of Quetzalcoatl's exile (disappearing into the sea in the east) and his return (rising as the morning star). This mythology underlies the "One Reed" return prophecy that may or may not have shaped Moctezuma's response to Cortés.
1428 – 1521 Xipe Totec -- the flayed god Xipe Totec ("Our Lord the Flayed One") is one of the most disturbing and theologically rich deities in the Aztec pantheon -- the god of agriculture, spring, renewal, seasonal change and the planting of seeds. His ritual (Tlacaxipehualiztli, "flaying of men") is performed in the second month of the year (February-March, the time of planting): captive warriors are flayed; their skins are worn by priests for 20 days, then discarded. The theology: just as a seed must shed its outer husk to germinate, the earth must shed its "skin" (the dry vegetation of winter) to produce the new growth of spring. The rotting skin worn by the priest represents the old year's dead vegetation; the new body beneath represents the new growth. The ceremony is simultaneously a fertility ritual (ensuring the agricultural year begins well), a sacrifice (honouring the gods with the most expensive possible offering) and a theatrical performance in which priests embody the death and renewal of the agricultural cycle. Xipe Totec is also associated with goldsmiths (the gold skin peeled from ore revealing the precious metal beneath) and with eye disease (petitioners wear the flayed skin over their faces to heal eye conditions).
1428 – 1521 Xiuhtecuhtli -- the old fire god Xiuhtecuhtli ("Turquoise Lord" or "Lord of the Year/Fire") is the fire god of the Aztec pantheon -- one of the oldest deities in Mesoamerica, associated with fire, time, the centre of the cosmos, the household hearth, the New Fire Ceremony and the final year of the 52-year cycle. He is depicted as an old man (fire is the oldest element) with a yellow and red face, a turquoise butterfly pectoral, and a crown of paper strips. His nahualli is the fire serpent (Xiuhcoatl) -- the weapon Huitzilopochtli uses to dismember Coyolxauhqui. Fire is the most sacred element in the Aztec cosmos (it is the first creation -- Ometeotl divides himself into fire to create the universe) and the most necessary for daily life. The household hearth (tlecuilli) is Xiuhtecuhtli's earthly presence in every home -- fed with three hearthstones (representing his three-stone home) and maintained continuously. The New Fire Ceremony is simultaneously the renewal of the cosmic fire (without which the sun cannot continue) and the renewal of every household fire (when the relay runners distribute the new fire from the Hill of the Star to every home in the empire).
