1299 – 1326 Osman I founds the dynasty Osman I (c.1258-1326) declares independence from the declining Seljuk Sultanate of Rum around 1299, establishing the Ottoman beylik in northwestern Anatolia near Bursa. A gifted leader who attracts ghazi warriors, nomadic Turks and dispossessed peasants, he raids Byzantine territory systematically, capturing Bursa shortly before his death (1326). His name gives the dynasty -- Osmanli in Turkish, Ottoman in European languages. He marries the daughter of a local religious leader, intertwining the dynasty with Islamic legitimacy from its foundation.
1299 – 1453 The Rise (1299–1453) The Ottoman rise spans 154 years from Osman I's founding of the dynasty to Mehmed II's conquest of Constantinople. Beginning as one of many small Turkish principalities (beylik) in northwestern Anatolia, the Ottomans expand systematically through military skill, pragmatic administration and the powerful ideology of ghazi (holy warrior) frontier culture. They cross into Europe in 1354, establish their capital at Adrianople (Edirne) in 1369, defeat a Christian coalition at Kosovo (1389) and Nicopolis (1396), survive Timur's devastating intervention (1402) and recover to take Constantinople on 29 May 1453 -- transforming a regional principality into a world empire.
1389 Battle of Kosovo -- the Balkans opened At the Battle of Kosovo (15 June 1389), Sultan Murad I defeats a Serbian-led Christian coalition under Prince Lazar. Both commanders die -- Murad is assassinated in his tent after the battle; Lazar is captured and executed. Kosovo becomes the defining myth of Serbian national identity. The battle opens the Balkans to Ottoman domination: Bulgaria is fully absorbed (1393), and the Ottomans become the dominant power in southeastern Europe. The anniversary (Vidovdan, St Vitus's Day) is still commemorated in Serbia.
1402 Battle of Ankara -- Timur captures Bayezid I At the Battle of Ankara (28 July 1402), the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) defeats and captures the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I -- the only Ottoman sultan ever taken prisoner. Timur dismembers the Ottoman state, restoring the Anatolian beyliks the Ottomans had absorbed. Bayezid dies in captivity (1403). The Ottoman succession crisis (the Interregnum, 1402-1413) sees Bayezid's sons fight a civil war. Mehmed I emerges victorious and reunites the empire. The Timurid intervention gives Constantinople a 50-year reprieve.
1453 – 1566 The Golden Age (1453–1566) The Ottoman golden age spans from the conquest of Constantinople to the death of Suleiman the Magnificent -- 113 years in which the empire reaches its maximum extent and cultural zenith. Mehmed II consolidates the Balkans and Anatolia. Selim I (1512-1520) doubles the empire's size in eight years, conquering Persia, Egypt and Syria and assuming the caliphate. Suleiman I (1520-1566) campaigns from Vienna to the Persian Gulf, builds the greatest legal and architectural programme in Ottoman history, and presides over a court of extraordinary sophistication. At his death the empire controls more territory than any state since Rome.
1453 Fall of Constantinople -- 29 May 1453 Mehmed II's conquest of Constantinople on 29 May 1453 transforms the Ottomans from a Balkan power into the heirs of Rome. The 53-day siege employs massive bronze cannon cast by the Hungarian engineer Urban; the Theodosian Walls that had held for 1,000 years are breached. Emperor Constantine XI dies on the walls. Mehmed rides to Hagia Sophia and converts it to a mosque. He adopts the title Kayser-i Rum (Caesar of Rome) and begins rebuilding the depopulated city as the capital of a world empire. The conquest reshapes the Mediterranean world.
1520 – 1566 Suleiman the Magnificent -- the apex Suleiman I (1520-1566) is the longest-reigning and most celebrated Ottoman sultan. He campaigns personally on thirteen major military expeditions, capturing Belgrade (1521), Rhodes (1522), defeating Hungary at Mohács (1526), besieging Vienna (1529) and campaigning repeatedly against Persia. He codifies Ottoman law so comprehensively that his own subjects call him Kanuni (the Lawgiver). His chief architect Sinan builds over 300 structures including the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul and the Selimiye in Edirne. His court -- dominated by his wife Roxelana and his grand vizier Ibrahim Pasha -- is one of the most sophisticated in the world.
1566 – 1839 Wars & Stagnation (1566–1839) The period from Suleiman's death to the Tanzimat reforms spans 273 years of gradual but accelerating decline punctuated by moments of recovery. The failed siege of Vienna (1683) marks the definitive end of Ottoman expansion in Europe; the Treaty of Karlowitz (1699) begins the long territorial retreat. Russia emerges as the empire's most dangerous enemy, fighting six wars and pushing the Ottoman frontier steadily south. The Janissaries -- once the empire's elite force -- become a conservative political force that murders reforming sultans. The empire earns its 19th-century epithet: 'the sick man of Europe.'
1571 Battle of Lepanto -- the naval check The Battle of Lepanto (7 October 1571) is the largest naval battle since antiquity -- 400+ ships, 150,000 men. A Holy League fleet under Don John of Austria destroys the Ottoman navy off the Greek coast. It is the first major Ottoman military defeat and the end of Ottoman naval supremacy in the western Mediterranean. Cervantes loses his left hand at Lepanto. But the strategic impact is limited: the Ottomans rebuild their fleet within a year and take Cyprus (1571) regardless. Lepanto is more symbolically than strategically decisive -- it breaks the myth of Ottoman invincibility at sea.
1683 Second siege of Vienna -- the turning point The Ottoman siege of Vienna (July-September 1683) is the high-water mark of Ottoman expansion in Europe and the beginning of the long retreat. Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha leads an army of 140,000 to Vienna's walls; the city holds under Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg. On 12 September 1683, a relief army under Jan III Sobieski of Poland and Charles of Lorraine descends from the Kahlenberg heights and destroys the Ottoman army in one of the most decisive cavalry charges in history. Kara Mustafa is strangled on the sultan's orders. The retreat from Vienna never reverses.
1699 Treaty of Karlowitz -- territorial retreat begins The Treaty of Karlowitz (26 January 1699) ends the Great Turkish War (1683-1699) and is the first major Ottoman territorial concession in Europe. Hungary, Transylvania and Slavonia go to Austria; Podolia to Poland; the Morea (Peloponnese) to Venice. The treaty establishes the pattern of the 18th and 19th centuries: Ottoman military defeat followed by territorial concession, followed by partial recovery, followed by further defeat. Karlowitz marks the moment when the Ottoman Empire definitively shifts from expanding power to defensive empire.
1774 Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca -- Russia dominant The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca (1774), ending the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, is the most damaging diplomatic defeat in Ottoman history before the 19th century. Russia gains the Crimea (formally in 1783), access to the Black Sea, and -- crucially -- the right to protect Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire, giving the Tsar a permanent pretext for interference in Ottoman internal affairs. Catherine the Great formulates the 'Greek Project' -- the partition of Ottoman Europe and restoration of a Byzantine Empire under Russian patronage. The Black Sea ceases to be an Ottoman lake.
1839 – 1922 Reform & Collapse (1839–1922) The final 83 years of Ottoman history are the most dramatic -- a race between modernisation and disintegration that the empire ultimately loses. The Tanzimat reforms (1839-1876) attempt to create a modern centralised state with equal rights for all subjects. The Constitutional period (1876, 1908) produces two parliaments. But the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) strip the empire of nearly all its European territory; the First World War (1914-1918) destroys it; the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923) kills over a million people; and Ataturk's War of Independence (1919-1922) produces the Turkish Republic from the ruins. The sultanate is abolished on 1 November 1922.
1915 – 1923 Armenian Genocide The Armenian Genocide (1915-1923) is the systematic mass murder and deportation of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire by the ruling Committee of Union and Progress (Young Turks). Between 600,000 and 1.5 million Armenians are killed in massacres, death marches through the Syrian desert, and starvation. The genocide is ordered by the triumvirate of Enver, Talaat and Cemal Pashas, who use the cover of World War I to eliminate what they see as a disloyal Christian minority. It is widely recognised by historians and many governments as the first genocide of the 20th century. Turkey officially denies it.
1919 – 1922 Ataturk and the War of Independence Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) organises Turkish nationalist resistance to the Allied partition of Anatolia following WWI, defeating Greek, Armenian and French forces in the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922). The victory is celebrated as the salvation of the Turkish homeland. The sultanate is abolished (1 November 1922); the caliphate follows (3 March 1924). The Republic of Turkey is proclaimed on 29 October 1923 with Ankara as its capital. Ataturk's radical westernisation programme -- alphabet reform, secularism, women's suffrage -- transforms Turkey into a modern nation-state.
1922 Abolition of the Sultanate -- 1 November 1922 The Grand National Assembly of Turkey abolishes the Ottoman Sultanate on 1 November 1922, separating the sultanate from the caliphate. Mehmed VI, the last sultan, flees Constantinople on a British warship on 17 November 1922. His cousin Abdulmecid II becomes the last caliph until the caliphate too is abolished in March 1924. The Ottoman Empire -- 623 years after Osman I's declaration of independence -- ceases to exist. Its territory is divided among Turkey, the British and French mandates of the Middle East, and the new Balkan states. The empire's legacy shapes the Middle East to the present day.
