• 1494 Birth -- Trabzon, 6 November 1494 Suleiman is born on 6 November 1494 in Trabzon, a Black Sea port city where his father Selim (the future Selim I) serves as governor. He is Selim's only surviving son -- unusual in a dynasty where fratricide was common practice. His mother is Hafsa Sultan, a Crimean Tatar woman. He is raised in the palace school at Topkapi from age seven, educated alongside devshirme boys in a curriculum that combines Islamic theology, Arabic, Persian and Ottoman literature, mathematics, history, horsemanship and the use of weapons. His tutors include some of the finest scholars in the empire. He speaks six languages fluently.
• 1494 – 1566 Suleiman the Magnificent (1494–1566) Suleiman I -- known in the West as 'the Magnificent' and to his own subjects as 'the Lawgiver' (Kanuni) -- is the longest-reigning, most celebrated and most powerful Ottoman sultan. His 46-year reign (1520-1566) marks the apex of the Ottoman Empire in every dimension: territorial extent (from Vienna to the Persian Gulf, from Crimea to Aden), military achievement (thirteen personal campaigns), administrative sophistication (the Kanun law code), architectural grandeur (Sinan's Süleymaniye), diplomatic reach (the Franco-Ottoman alliance, correspondence with every European court) and cultural brilliance (his own poetry, court miniatures, goldsmithing). He dies as he lived -- on campaign, in a tent outside a Hungarian fortress, age 71.
• 1509 – 1520 Training for power -- governorships Suleiman serves as governor of three provinces before his accession: Kaffa (Crimea, c.1509-1512), Manisa (western Anatolia, 1513-1520) and briefly Edirne. The provincial governorships are the Ottoman system of training heirs apparent in practical administration -- revenue collection, justice, military command and the management of diverse populations. At Manisa he governs a sophisticated commercial city with Greek, Jewish and Turkish populations. He develops a reputation for justice and accessibility that contrasts with his father Selim's ferocious severity. He also develops, at Manisa, his friendship with the young Ibrahim (later Ibrahim Pasha), who becomes his page and his closest companion.
• 1520 – 1558 Roxelana -- the slave who became his wife Hürrem Sultan (c.1502-1558), known in Europe as Roxelana (the Ruthenian), is a Ukrainian slave who enters the harem c.1517, catches Suleiman's attention and never leaves it. She becomes his haseki (chief consort), bears him five sons and a daughter, and in 1534 becomes his legal wife -- the first concubine to marry a sultan in Ottoman history, breaking a custom designed to prevent the sultan's heir from having a mother with dynastic ambitions. Her influence is profound and enduring: she is involved in the execution of Ibrahim Pasha and the murder of Suleiman's eldest son Mustafa. She founds charitable institutions in Istanbul, Jerusalem and Mecca. Suleiman's love letters to her, written in verse, survive.
• 1520 – 1566 Suleiman the Lawgiver -- the Kanun The Kanun (law) of Suleiman is his greatest domestic achievement and the reason his own subjects call him Kanuni rather than Magnificent. It codifies land tenure, criminal law, taxation, administrative procedure and the social order across an empire of 15 million people. The Kanun supplements Islamic sharia with secular law (örf) in areas where sharia is silent or ambiguous -- a practice technically permissible under Islamic jurisprudence, but conducted on an unprecedented scale by Suleiman. The code is fair, consistent and accessible: its provisions are inscribed on the walls of official buildings so that anyone can read what the law requires. It remains in force, with modifications, for three centuries.
• 1520 Accession -- 30 September 1520 Selim I dies suddenly of illness on 22 September 1520 near Edirne. Suleiman is informed privately; the death is concealed for eight days while a messenger rides to Manisa. Suleiman arrives in Istanbul on 30 September and accedes without opposition -- he has no brothers to contest his claim. His first acts are deliberately conciliatory: he releases political prisoners held by Selim, dismisses some of Selim's most brutal officials, and pays the traditional accession gift to the Janissaries. European ambassadors who meet him are impressed: the Venetian Bartolomeo Contarini writes that he is 'young, of fine complexion and slender, with a thin beard... said to be a wise lord, fond of study and knowledge.'
• 1521 First campaign -- Belgrade falls Suleiman's first personal campaign captures Belgrade on 28 August 1521 -- the fortress that had twice repulsed Mehmed II and which Suleiman's grandfather Bayezid II considered impregnable. The campaign is meticulously prepared: Suleiman takes 100,000 troops, advances in tight formation, and systematically reduces the outer defences before the city itself. The garrison surrenders after a four-month siege. Suleiman enters Belgrade, converts the cathedral to a mosque and orders the city's population resettled in Istanbul. The fall of Belgrade opens the Pannonian plain -- the gateway to Vienna. Charles V and Francis I, occupied with each other, send no relief.
• 1522 Rhodes -- the Knights expelled from the Aegean The siege of Rhodes (June-December 1522) takes Suleiman six months and cost reportedly 50,000 Ottoman casualties -- against a defending force of perhaps 7,000 Knights of St John and 4,000 Rhodian civilians. Grand Master Philippe Villiers de l'Isle-Adam negotiates a surrender with full honours: the Knights march out with their weapons, archives and relics on 1 January 1523. Suleiman, reportedly moved by the Grand Master's dignity, guarantees their safe passage. The Knights eventually settle on Malta (1530), from where they continue to contest Ottoman Mediterranean power. Suleiman later regrets his generosity: 'It saddens me to be compelled to force this old Christian to leave his home.'
• 1523 – 1536 Ibrahim Pasha -- friendship and power Ibrahim Pasha (grand vizier 1523-1536) is Suleiman's most intimate companion -- they sleep in the same room, eat at the same table, and Suleiman calls him 'my Ibrahim.' Born a Greek from Parga (captured in a devshirme levy), Ibrahim rises through Suleiman's personal household to become the second most powerful man in the empire. He is brilliant, cultured and catastrophically arrogant: he signs himself 'Sultan Ibrahim' in diplomatic correspondence, displays captured statues of classical antiquity outside his palace (shocking in Islamic Istanbul), and behaves as though his position is permanent. On 15 March 1536, Suleiman has him strangled in Topkapi Palace. The body is found the next morning.
• 1526 Mohács -- Hungary destroyed in two hours The Battle of Mohács (29 August 1526) takes approximately two hours and ends Hungary's existence as an independent state for 167 years. King Louis II of Hungary commands perhaps 25,000 troops against Suleiman's 100,000. The Hungarian cavalry charges the Ottoman artillery prematurely; the Janissaries hold the fire until the charge is at point-blank range. The Hungarian army is annihilated; Louis II drowns in a stream fleeing the battlefield. Suleiman enters Buda unopposed. He reportedly weeps over Louis's body when it is found: 'I came indeed in arms against him; but it was not my wish that he should be thus cut off while he had scarcely tasted the sweets of life and royalty.'
• 1529 Vienna -- the limit of empire The siege of Vienna (27 September - 14 October 1529) is Suleiman's greatest military disappointment. He arrives late in the season -- the march from Istanbul through rain and mud has taken four months; the heavy artillery has had to be left behind. The city is defended by approximately 20,000 troops under Philip the Palatine. The Ottoman trenches cannot reach the walls before the autumn rains make further operations impossible. Three assaults are repulsed. On 14 October Suleiman orders withdrawal, burning his camp. The weather and logistics defeat him as much as the defenders. He withdraws saying he will return -- and does attempt Vienna again in 1532, but turns back without engaging Charles V's massive defensive force.
• 1550 – 1558 The Süleymaniye -- Sinans masterpiece for the sultan The Süleymaniye Mosque complex (1550-1558) is Suleiman's most visible legacy in Istanbul and Sinan's greatest commission. Suleiman personally oversees the construction, reportedly carrying stones himself on the first day (a symbolic act demonstrating imperial humility before God). The complex employs 3,000 workers at its peak. Its dome (53 metres high) challenges Hagia Sophia; its four minarets announce imperial status; its külliye (complex) includes eight colleges, a hospital, a hospice, kitchens, a caravanserai, a hamam and the tombs of Suleiman and Roxelana. Sinan writes that Hagia Sophia was his apprenticeship, the Süleymaniye his journeyman's work and the Selimiye his masterpiece -- but the Süleymaniye remains the supreme symbol of Suleiman's reign.
• 1553 The murder of Mustafa -- the succession destroyed Prince Mustafa (c.1515-1553), Suleiman's eldest son by his first consort Mahidevran Sultan, is widely considered the most capable of the imperial princes and the obvious successor. He is popular with the Janissaries (who openly prefer him to Roxelana's sons) and praised by foreign observers. In October 1553, while Suleiman is on campaign in Persia, Mustafa is summoned to his father's tent and strangled by mutes. The execution follows accusations -- almost certainly orchestrated by Roxelana and Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha -- of treasonous contact with Safavid Persia. The Janissaries nearly mutiny. A popular lament (Şehzade Mustafa Mersiyesi) mourns him as the empire's lost future.
• 1558 Death of Roxelana -- Suleiman alone Roxelana dies on 15-18 April 1558, aged approximately 56, after a long illness. She predeceases Suleiman by eight years. Suleiman is devastated -- her death ends the extraordinary 35-year partnership that had shaped his reign as much as any military campaign. He writes a poem for her: 'Throne of my lonely niche, my wealth, my love, my moonlight / My most sincere friend, my confidant, my very existence, my Sultan...' He buries her in a türbe (mausoleum) in the Süleymaniye complex, later joining her there. After her death Suleiman grows more withdrawn, delegating increasingly to his grand vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha while continuing to campaign.
• 1566 Suleiman the Magnificent dies at Szigetvár Suleiman dies on the night of 5-6 September 1566 in his campaign tent outside the Hungarian fortress of Szigetvár, on his thirteenth and final military campaign. He is 71 years old, suffering from gout so severe he has to be carried in a litter. His death is concealed for 48 days by his grand vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha to prevent the army dissolving before Selim II can arrive. The fortress falls on 7 September -- the day after his death -- when its commander Miklós Zrínyi leads a suicidal cavalry charge. Suleiman's body is returned to Istanbul and interred in the Süleymaniye beside Roxelana. He reigned for 46 years, 3 months and 7 days.
